Chapter 9 - A Gathering in the Gardens

By late afternoon, the crisp autumn air gave way to a warm, golden sunlight that bathed the central courtyard in a brilliant glow. The tension that had once gripped the Duca estate was entirely gone, replaced by an atmosphere of genuine peace and shared community.

We had organized a small, private gathering on the stone terrace overlooking the rose gardens—not a formal corporate banquet or a tense family council, but a simple celebration for the staff and their families. Long wooden tables were laden with food, laughter echoed softly across the manicured lawns, and children ran back and forth playing tag near the fountains.

I sat at the end of the stone patio, holding a cup of black coffee, watching the scene unfold before me.

Lily was the center of attention, wearing her bright yellow sweater, proudly showing off her new stuffed rabbit to a couple of other children from the staff quarters. And keeping a watchful, protective eye just two steps behind her was Pino, acting as the most terrifying yet gentle babysitter in the entire state.

Marta walked over, holding a small plate of pastries, and offered a warm, reassuring smile as she set it on the table.

"You haven't touched your food yet, sir," Marta noted gently.

"I'm more interested in watching the chaos," I replied, a faint smile touching my lips.

"It’s good chaos," Marta said softly, following my gaze toward Lily, who was currently trying to teach Pino how to sit politely for a cookie. "For the first time in years, people aren't looking over their shoulders wondering who is plotting against them. You gave them safety, Mr. Lorenzo. You gave them a real home."

"No, Marta," I corrected her quietly, taking a sip of my coffee. "You and Lily reminded me what a home actually looks like. I spent years building walls to keep the world out, forgetting that the only walls worth having are the ones that protect the people you care about."

Marta looked at me, her expression softening with profound mutual respect. "Well, those walls are unbreakable now."

Around us, the laughter of children drifted on the afternoon breeze, the golden sun sparkled off the estate fountains, and the loyal Doberman let out a soft, contented bark. The battle was over, the enemies were gone, and the future was entirely secure.
