Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Hallway

The heavy oak doors of the grand foyer swung open effortlessly at my approach, the brass hinges oiled to absolute silence. Stepping inside the manor was like stepping into another century. Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the imported Italian marble floors, while priceless oil paintings of my ancestors stared down with cold, judging eyes.
Usually, the halls were deserted at this hour, save for the rhythmic patrols of security guards. Today, however, a subtle tension hung in the air. Whispers echoed faintly from the corridor leading to the domestic quarters, followed by the sharp, authoritative click of heels against stone.
I kept my stride steady, Lily resting securely against my shoulder. Her tiny hand was still tangled in the fabric of my shirt, her breathing growing slower and more even as the warmth of the house began to soothe her frozen limbs. Pino padded softly beside us, his claws clicking rhythmically on the marble—a sound that always struck fear into anyone familiar with his reputation.
"Master Lorenzo?"
A sharp, breathless voice rang out from the archway.
Renata stepped into view. She was a woman in her late forties, immaculately dressed in the black-and-white uniform of a head housekeeper. Her hair was pulled back into a severe bun that made her sharp facial features look even harsher. But the moment her eyes locked onto me—and more importantly, onto the child in my arms and the massive Doberman at my side—her composure cracked for a fraction of a second.
I saw the micro-expression of panic flash across her face before she quickly plastered on a mask of deep, manufactured concern.
"Oh, thank goodness you're back, sir!" Renata gasped, clasping her hands together in dramatic despair. "We've been searching everywhere for you. There has been a terrible, disgraceful incident in the east wing."
I didn't stop walking. I didn't even slow down. I walked right up to her, towering over her by nearly a foot, my expression a mask of absolute ice.
"Is that so, Renata?" my voice was low, carrying a dangerous edge that caused her to involuntarily take a half-step back.
"Yes, sir! It’s absolute chaos," Renata continued, playing her part with rehearsed theatricality, though her eyes darted nervously toward Pino, who let out a low, warning growl deep in his chest. "That new maid, Marta—the one you allowed to stay in the auxiliary quarters—she was caught red-handed. We found your mother's heirloom diamond-encrusted pocket watch hidden inside her locker. An absolute disgrace to this household. Security has already detained her in the lower service hall, and I was just on my way to prepare the paperwork for her immediate dismissal and handover to the police."
Lily whimpered softly at the word police, her small arms tightening around my neck. I felt a surge of cold fury rise in my chest.
"Is that what happened?" I asked smoothly, staring directly into Renata’s eyes. "A diamond-encrusted pocket watch? My mother's watch?"
"Yes, sir! Exactly as I said," Renata nodded eagerly, confident that her trap had closed successfully. "She must have slipped into your private study during the morning cleaning rotation. Greed makes monsters out of people, Master Lorenzo."
"Indeed it does," I replied softly.
I turned my head slightly, catching the reflection of movement down the hallway. Two of my senior estate guards were standing near the corridor intersection, looking uncomfortable.
"Marcus," I called out, my voice carrying effortlessly down the corridor.
The larger of the two guards straightened instantly and jogged over. "Sir?"
"Bring Marta up here. Now."
Renata’s eyes widened slightly in surprise, a flicker of genuine confusion crossing her features. "Sir, there's no need to dirty the main foyer with a common thief. We can handle her down in—"
"Did I ask for your opinion, Renata?" I cut her off, my tone dropping to a whisper that commanded absolute submission.
Renata swallowed hard, shutting her mouth instantly. She lowered her gaze, but not before I caught a flash of calculating malice in her eyes. She thought she had won. She thought the hierarchy of the house would protect her lies. She didn't realize that the rules of this house weren't dictated by housekeepers; they were dictated by me.
A minute later, heavy footsteps echoed down the hall. Marcus returned, flanked by another guard, and between them walked a woman with her head bowed in quiet defeat.
Marta looked exhausted. Her maid’s uniform was slightly rumpled, and her eyes were red-rimmed from crying. But the moment she raised her head and saw her daughter cradled safely in my arms, all color drained from her face.
"Lily!" Marta cried out, breaking away from the guards and stumbling forward. "Oh, my sweet baby... what are you doing here? Did they hurt you?"
Lily scrambled out of my arms before I could set her down, running straight into her mother’s embrace. The two of them collapsed onto the marble floor, holding onto each other as if the entire world were trying to tear them apart.
Renata stepped forward, her voice dripping with fake pity and thinly veiled venom. "See this, Master Lorenzo? Absolutely shameless. And to drag her child into her thievery... she belongs behind bars. If we don't make an example of her, every servant in this estate will think they can steal from you."
I looked down at the weeping mother and child, then back up at Renata. The pieces of the puzzle were clicking together with terrifying clarity.
"Renata," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Tell me again... exactly how did you discover the watch in her locker?"
Renata blinked, momentarily thrown off by the calm inquiry. "Well, I... I was conducting a routine inspection of the staff quarters, sir. I noticed the locker door wasn't fully latched, and when I checked inside, there it was, wrapped in a cleaning rag."
"A routine inspection," I repeated slowly. "In the middle of a Tuesday morning, while I am locked in a high-stakes merger meeting with my uncles."
"Yes, sir. We must be vigilant—"
"And yet," I interrupted, taking a slow step toward her, "my private study is on the third floor, locked with a biometric scanner that only recognizes my thumbprint and my personal security chief. Marta’s quarters are in the basement wing on the opposite side of the estate."
Renata’s breath hitched. For the first time, the color began to drain from her face.
"So tell me, Renata," I whispered, closing the distance between us until she could feel the freezing chill of my presence. "How did a maid with zero clearance bypass a military-grade biometric lock, steal a watch from a room she has never entered, and manage to place it in her own locker—all while my security team was on high alert?"

Silence fell over the foyer so heavy you could hear the grandfather clock ticking fifty feet away.
Renata opened her mouth, but no words came out.
