Chapter 22 - The Dapple-Gray Mare

The morning air was brisk and clean down by the private stables, carrying the rich scents of dry pine shavings, oiled leather, and sweet clover hay. The old wooden stables had been completely restored, with wide, airy stalls, heated stone corridors, and open paddock runs extending toward the autumn hills.
Lily walked between Marta and me, gripping my fingers tightly on one side and her mother’s hand on the other, swinging her arms with bouncy energy. Pino trotted alongside, his cropped ears swiveling to catch the occasional snort or whinny echoing from the open barn doors.
Old Thomas, the estate’s veteran stablemaster who had served my grandfather four decades ago, stood waiting near the wash rack. In his weathered hands, he held the lead rope of a miniature dapple-gray Welsh pony. The animal stood barely forty inches tall, with a snowy white mane, large, intelligent hazel eyes, and a calm, unflinching disposition.
Lily froze three paces away, clutching her rabbit against her ribs, her breath catching in her throat.
"Is she... is she made of clouds?" Lily whispered, awestruck.
Old Thomas chuckled, tipping his woolen cap with deep respect. "No, little miss. She's flesh and bone, but as sweet-tempered as a summer morning. Raised on a quiet meadow up north. Never bites, never kicks, and she has a particular fondness for sliced green apples."
"Go on," I encouraged gently, giving Lily’s small shoulder an encouraging nudge. "Introduce yourself. She’s been waiting to meet her rider."
Lily took slow, deliberate steps toward the pony, mirroring the exact careful patience she had used with Pino behind the trash bins weeks ago. She reached out her tiny hand, palm turned flat, holding her breath. The gray pony lowered its velvet muzzle, sniffing the little fingers before nudging Lily’s palm with a soft, warm exhale.
Lily let out a squeal of unadulterated joy that echoed through the wooden rafters, throwing her arms around the pony’s sturdy neck. "Mommy, look! She hugged me back! Her nose is softer than a cloud!"
Marta stood beside me, dabbing the corner of her eye with a handkerchief, completely overcome. "I used to lie awake at night in the auxiliary quarters, Lorenzo, wondering if I would ever have enough savings to buy her a second-hand bicycle. Now look at her... she looks like she was born for this."
"She was born to be happy, Marta," I said softly, watching the pony gently nuzzle Lily’s dark curls. "That is all that matters."
"What are you going to name her, Lily?" Thomas asked, handing the child a crisp slice of apple from his apron pocket.
Lily fed the fruit to the pony with meticulous care, watching the animal chew with fascinated delight. She thought for a long moment, tapping her chin with a sticky finger before pointing proudly at the animal's spotted gray coat.

"Pebble," Lily declared with absolute certainty. "Because she looks like the shiny gray river stone I gave Mr. Coffee this morning."
A burst of warm laughter filled the stables. Thomas nodded solemnly, accepting the name into the official estate registry. For the next hour, I leaned against the cedar paddock fence, my mug of coffee warming my hands, watching the stablemaster lead Pebble around the soft sand arena while Lily sat perched atop the tiny saddle, her laughter ringing out across the quiet valley like clear silver bells.
