Chapter 7 - Rebuilding the Foundation

The morning sun climbed higher into the clear blue sky, casting long, elegant shadows across the grand courtyard of the Duca estate. While the legal and corporate cleanup of my empire was being handled by a newly appointed, fiercely loyal executive team, my immediate focus had shifted entirely to the grounds and the people who actually kept this place breathing.

I walked down the grand marble staircase with Lily riding comfortably on my shoulders, her small hands gripping my hair gently for balance. Pino patrolled a few paces ahead, his ears perked, acting as our personal vanguard.

Marta walked beside us, clipboard in hand as she briefed me on the household logistics.

"The East Wing domestic quarters have been fully inspected, sir," Marta reported, her voice steady and professional, yet carrying a warm undertone. "We’ve relocated three single-parent staff families to the newly renovated west courtyard cottages. The children will have a safe, dedicated play area away from the main service roads."

I nodded approvingly. "Make sure they have full access to the estate's private tutors and medical care. Anyone who works under this roof deserves to live with dignity and security."

Marta stopped walking and turned to me, her eyes shining with deep gratitude. "You've changed this place completely, Master Lorenzo. Just a few days ago, people lived here in fear of what might happen if they made a single mistake. Now... it actually feels like a community."

"Fear is a lazy tool, Marta," I replied, looking out over the manicured lawns where a group of newly hired gardeners were working efficiently. "Loyalty earned through fairness and protection lasts much longer than loyalty enforced through terror."

As if on cue, Lily reached down from my shoulders, tapping my forehead playfully. "Can we go see the horses, Mr. Coffee?"

I couldn't help the smile that crept across my face. Mr. Coffee. Apparently, my new nickname had stuck.

"We can do better than that," I said, adjusting her grip so she wouldn't slip. "How about we go pick out a brand new pony for the estate stables—one that’s gentle enough for a brave little girl?"

Lily gasped, her eyes going wide as saucers. "A real pony? For me?"

"For you," I confirmed.

We turned toward the grand stables at the far end of the garden. The crisp autumn wind carried the scent of pine and fresh hay, and for the first time in my life, the vast estate didn't feel like a cage or a battleground. It felt expansive, alive, and entirely mine to protect.

The dark days of suspicion, corporate backstabbing, and lonely isolation were officially over. The foundation had been torn down, and in its place, something unbreakable had been built—anchored by loyalty, fierce protection, and the bright, infectious laughter of a little girl who had once cried behind a row of green trash bins.
