Chapter 15 - The Lion’s Den The grand library of the Duca manor had been converted into an operational war room by nightfall. The heavy velvet curtains were drawn tight, blocking any potential sightlines from the tree line. On the central mahogany table, blueprints of the Ironwood Ridge compound lay spread out beneath the glow of secure tablets and encrypted satellite uplinks.

Marcus stood on the opposite side of the table, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on Elena Vance with unvarnished suspicion.
"The perimeter is fortified with triple-redundant motion sensors and automated thermal sweeps," Marcus said, tracing a finger along the outer ridge of the satellite photograph. "They have at least twenty private contractors on-site, former elite military. If we send a tactical team through the main access road, they’ll have high-ground advantage before we clear the tree line."
"Which is why you don't use the road," Elena said, pointing a slender finger at an old mining drainage tunnel that ran beneath the southern ridge. "The compound was built on an abandoned limestone quarry from the 1920s. The ventilation shafts connect directly to the sub-basement server vaults where their encrypted communications hub is located. My father kept the original civil engineering maps in his safe deposit box. That’s how they planned to infiltrate your port facilities if the merger stalled."
I listened without speaking, my fingers wrapped around a steaming mug of black coffee. Every instinct honed over years of corporate warfare and physical survival was screaming at me. Elena was offering a surgical strike that could decapitate Aegis Vanguard’s local network before they could mobilize against the estate. But entering that compound meant leaving the fortress unguarded.
A soft knock rattled the library door.
Marcus reached instinctively for the holster beneath his jacket, but relaxed as the door creaked open just an inch.
Lily stepped in, wearing her flannel pajamas and clutching her repaired rabbit. She looked around the dimly lit, high-tension room with wide, curious eyes. Behind her, Marta stood in the hallway, looking mortified.
"I'm so sorry, Master Lorenzo," Marta whispered, reaching to pull the girl back. "She woke up from a nightmare and insisted she had to check on Pino."
"It's alright, Marta," I said, setting my mug down and stepping away from the tactical maps.
I walked over to the doorway and knelt down in front of Lily. The little girl looked past my shoulder at Elena, then at Marcus, and finally down at Pino, who had already trotted over to rest his head gently against her small knees.
"Did Mr. Fluffy have another earache?" I asked softly, smoothing a stray curl away from her forehead.
"No," Lily whispered, her small fingers reaching out to touch the lapel of my jacket. "I dreamed that the bad people came back with the big clock. I dreamed they were taking Mommy away again."
I felt the blood in my veins turn to liquid nitrogen. The fear that these people had inflicted on an innocent child—the terror that Richard, Vance, and their unseen masters had weaponized for corporate leverage—was something I would never forgive. Not in this lifetime.
I took Lily’s small, warm hand in mine, squeezing it gently.
"Listen to me, Lily," I said, my voice steady, calm, and utterly unbreakable. "Nobody is taking your mother. Nobody is coming inside this house. I promised you that you are safe here, and Lorenzo Duca never breaks a promise. Do you understand?"
Lily looked into my eyes for a long moment, searching my face just as she had behind the trash cans three days ago. Slowly, the tension drained from her small shoulders, and she nodded.
"Okay, Mr. Coffee," she whispered, leaning forward to press a quick, clumsy kiss against my cheek. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight, sweetheart."
Marta guided her back down the quiet hallway, closing the door behind them.

I stood up slowly, the warmth completely vanishing from my expression. When I turned back to the tactical table, Elena and Marcus were both staring at me in complete silence.
"Marcus," I said, my voice carrying the lethal authority of an executioner. "Prepare the strike team. We move on Ironwood Ridge at 0300. We don't take prisoners, and we don't leave their servers standing. When the sun comes up tomorrow, Aegis Vanguard will understand what happens when you threaten the Duca family."
