Chapter 13 - An Unwelcome Emissary The gates did not open automatically. Marcus’s protocol required manual physical clearance for any vehicle not pre-registered in my personal registry. Through the iron bars of the inner gate, the sedan paused, its engine purring with expensive German precision. Two armed guards approached with mirrors and scanners, methodically clearing the undercarriage before signaling the barricade to lift.

I set Lily down on the stone terrace. "Go with your mother into the conservatory, Lily. Marcus has some business to discuss with me."

Lily tilted her head, sensing the subtle shift in the air, but nodded obediently. "Come on, Pino. You're the security chief now."

Pino didn't move immediately. He looked at me, waiting for my silent nod. When I tilted my head toward the glass doors of the conservatory, the great beast turned and escorted the girl inside, his massive shoulders brushing against her small frame.

The black sedan pulled up to the circular driveway in front of the main portico. The driver stepped out, opened the rear door, and stood at rigid attention.

The woman who stepped out was not someone I expected, yet her face was unmistakably familiar. She wore a tailored charcoal wool coat over an ivory silk blouse, her dark hair swept up in an elegant, severe twist. She carried no luggage, only an embossed leather document portfolio.

Elena Vance.

The arranged bride my uncles had tried to force upon me. The woman who had allegedly been waiting at the downtown cathedral to seal my corporate subjugation.

She walked up the wide marble steps toward the terrace with an effortless, predatory grace, her heels clicking with deliberate cadence against the stone. There was no embarrassment in her expression, no shame for her father's disgrace, and certainly no fear of the armed guards standing fifty paces away with hands resting on their sidearms.

"Lorenzo," she said, stopping three paces from where I stood. Her voice was cool, cultured, and devoid of the theatrical arrogance her father had displayed in the boardroom.

"You have ten seconds to explain why you are on my property, Elena," I said coldly, keeping my hands in my pockets. "Your father is a fugitive crossing European borders, and your family's assets are currently being liquidated by federal receivers. You have no status here."

Elena gave a small, humorless smile, her pale eyes assessing me with sharp intelligence. "My father was an impatient dinosaur who thought business was still conducted with blunt force and cheap parlor tricks. He thought planting an antique watch on a frightened maid was a stroke of strategic genius. I told him it was amateurish, insulting, and guaranteed to fail."

"And yet you were ready to stand at the altar to collect your thirty pieces of silver."

"I was ready to protect what belongs to me," Elena corrected smoothly, stepping closer and unzipping her leather portfolio. "I didn't come here to plead for my father’s freedom, Lorenzo. He made his bed with your pathetic uncles, and he can spend his twilight years avoiding extradition in a Swiss chalet for all I care. I came here because I know what he left behind."

She pulled a single sheet of watermarked paper from the folder and held it out to me. It was an encrypted shipping receipt bearing the crest of Aegis Vanguard.

"Berth 14," Elena murmured, her voice dropping so only I could hear. "My father wasn't the architect, Lorenzo. He was the broker. The real owner of Aegis Vanguard didn't lose his money when your accounts froze. He lost his temper. And he knows that the key to breaking you isn't in your bank accounts—it’s within these walls."

Instead, my eyes bored into hers, searching for the slightest trace of deception.
