Chapter 24 - The Weight of Heritage

I remained motionless behind my desk for several minutes, the gravity of the revelation settling into my mind like heavy stone.
Richard and Arthur had been terrified not just of my resistance to their forced merger, but of the ticking legal clock in the municipal archives. If Marta had ever realized who her mother was, the entire western quadrant of the Duca empire—the strategic land corridor that allowed our freight trucks access to the deep-water harbor—could have been legally severed from the syndicate's control. They had tried to criminalize her, blacklist her, and drive her into the gutter with a fabricated theft charge to invalidate any future legal standing she might assert.
"Does she know?" I asked quietly, looking up at Marcus.
"Not a word," Marcus replied firmly. "The records were sealed in a private vault in Genoa. If our forensic auditors hadn't pulled the cross-referenced land deeds during Arthur’s federal asset seizure, this document would have gathered dust in an abandoned archive forever. Marta still believes she was hired through a standard domestic agency as an ordinary junior cleaner."
I looked down at the paper. Marta’s mother had served my grandfather with unwavering loyalty, only to be cast into obscurity when corporate restructuring took precedence over human honor. My father had been a powerful man, but in his ruthless pursuit of empire, he had allowed his brothers to sweep inconvenient truths beneath the rug.
"Prepare the title transfer paperwork," I ordered, picking up my pen.
Marcus blinked, genuine surprise flickering across his hardened face. "Lorenzo... that land controls the primary private freight access to your northern terminal. Legally, with Richard and Arthur in federal prison, our corporate attorneys could tie this deed up in probate court for the next thirty years. She would never have the resources to contest it."
I looked Marcus directly in the eye, my voice laced with steel. "Did I claw my way to the head of this family to become Richard? Did I burn down Ironwood Ridge just to steal land from a mother and child who bleed for this house?"
Marcus held my gaze for a heartbeat, then slowly lowered his head in silent, profound respect. "Understood, sir. I will have our senior counsel draft the official recognition of title."

"No," I corrected, standing up and buttoning my jacket. "Draft a full restitution and co-ownership covenant. Marta does not just own the western parcel. She becomes a permanent, protected partner in the Duca Estate Trust, with her equity protected in an irrevocable fund held exclusively for Lily."
I took the birth certificate and the vintage deed in my hands. "Tell Marta to meet me in the East Parlor. It's time she knows who she truly is."
