Chapter 4 – The Trap Begins to Close

Harrison arrived at Khloe's estate just before sunrise.
The mansion stood exactly as it always had—perfectly trimmed hedges, polished windows, luxury vehicles lined neatly along the circular driveway.
Beautiful.
Orderly.
Built on lies.
Richard had already left for a board meeting.
Khloe answered the door wearing one of Richard's old sweaters. She hadn't slept.
The dark circles beneath her eyes told Harrison everything he needed to know.
"You heard him?"
She nodded.
"He said I'd sign anything after the baby was born."
Her voice cracked.
"He was talking about me like I was already gone."
Harrison stepped inside.
"Show me every financial document you can find."
For the next two hours, they searched the house.
Most drawers contained nothing more than routine paperwork.
Then Harrison noticed something unusual.
A framed landscape painting in Richard's study hung slightly crooked.
He lifted it from the wall.
Behind it sat a small biometric safe.
Khloe stared.
"I didn't even know that was there."
"You weren't supposed to."
Within minutes, Harrison's forensic technician photographed the safe without touching it.
"No fingerprints," the technician said quietly.
"If we open it now, Richard's lawyers could claim evidence tampering."
"So we wait," Harrison replied.
He turned to Khloe.
"From now on, you don't confront him."
"What if he asks questions?"
"You answer them."

"And if he lies?"
"You let him."
Khloe frowned.
"That's it?"
Harrison smiled faintly.
"The easiest way to catch a liar is to let him keep talking."
Before leaving, Harrison handed her a tiny pendant.
It looked like an ordinary silver heart.
"It's beautiful."
"It also records audio."
Khloe looked up in surprise.
"You'll wear it every day."
She slipped it around her neck.
For the first time in weeks, she felt something she hadn't expected.
She wasn't alone anymore.
That afternoon, Richard welcomed Vanessa into his downtown penthouse.
She kicked off her heels and laughed.
"When is she finally leaving?"
Richard poured two glasses of champagne.
"Soon."
Vanessa wrapped her arms around his neck.
"I want our baby growing up here."
"He will."
"And your wife?"
Richard took a slow sip.
"Khloe won't fight."
Vanessa smiled.

"Good."
Neither of them noticed the tiny red light blinking inside the decorative clock on the bookshelf.
Across town, Harrison listened through an encrypted receiver.
Every word.
Every promise.
Every lie.
Then Vanessa asked the one question that changed everything.
"You already changed the insurance policy..."
She lowered her voice.
"...what if she doesn't agree to the divorce?"
Richard answered without hesitation.
"She won't have much choice."
Harrison's jaw tightened.
He replayed the sentence three times.
Something wasn't right.
It wasn't what Richard had said.
May you like
It was how confidently he had said it.
As if divorce wasn't his only plan.
