Chapter 16 – Richard's Last Gamble

The defense called Richard to the stand.
He adjusted his tie nervously.
"I never wanted Khloe hurt."
Harrison rose for cross-examination.
"You loved your wife?"
"Yes."
"You celebrated her pregnancy?"
"Of course."
Harrison held up a document.
"Then why did you remove her as beneficiary from your life insurance policy?"
Richard hesitated.
"I was restructuring my estate."
Another document appeared.
"Why did you transfer forty-eight million dollars into offshore companies?"
"My accountants handled investments."
Another.
"Who created those shell corporations?"
"I don't remember."
Harrison smiled faintly.
"You don't remember?"
"No."
He placed a thick binder on the witness stand.
"Fortunately..."
"...your emails do."
For the next hour, Harrison walked Richard through hundreds of messages.
Each contradiction destroyed another piece of his credibility.
Finally Harrison asked one question.
"Mr. Harrington..."
"If you truly loved your wife..."
"...why did you tell Ms. Kensington that your daughter would 'only complicate the divorce'?"
Richard's face turned pale.
"I..."
