The digital clock on the bedside table ticked over to midnight, marking the transition into a brand-new day. Inside the barrier-free master suite, the smart home sensors maintained a gentle, perfect climate, filling the room with clean, fresh air and the faint, soothing sound of ocean waves drifting through the open balcony doors.

She lay awake for a quiet moment, looking up at the ceiling where the small, dark lens of the independent security unit gleamed faintly from within the smoke detector casing. It was a silent sentinel, a technical vestige of the night she had turned the tables on her abusers. But unlike the surveillance systems they had once used to monitor and control her every movement, this lens belonged to her.
