By early afternoon, the focus shifted back to the local community. The groundwork for the Community Justice and Resource Center was officially underway, and photos of the construction site were beginning to circulate through independent local news outlets.
Unlike the sterile, intimidating architecture of traditional legal institutions, the center was designed with dignity, warmth, and accessibility at its core. Natural wood tones, abundant natural light, barrier-free ramps, private consultation rooms, and an integrated childcare facility made the space feel less like a courthouse and more like a sanctuary of restoration.
She and Clara drove down to the site to inspect the progress. Hard hats in hand, they walked the perimeter with the lead architect, reviewing the smart-door integrations and the secure digital intake kiosks that Sarah’s tech team had designed.
As they walked past the main entrance, an elderly woman standing on the sidewalk with her granddaughter paused to watch them. Recognizing her from a recent community outreach event, the woman stepped forward, her eyes bright with unshed tears.
"Excuse me," the woman said softly, her voice trembling with emotion. "Are you Ms. Mercer?"
"I am," she replied, stopping her chair and turning respectfully toward the woman.
