Chapter 9 - The Aftermath of the Storm

Three months passed.
The fall of the Vance family was the talk of the city’s elite for weeks, but the public's attention quickly shifted to the incredible legal battle that followed.
Chloe, facing overwhelming video and physical evidence, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and grand theft. Her attorney managed to negotiate a plea deal, but her reputation was permanently destroyed. She was sentenced to two years in a federal penitentiary.
Eleanor Vance, as the mastermind behind the embezzlement and forgery, received no mercy. The court sentenced her to eight years in prison for financial fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement.
Amanda Vance cooperated fully with the prosecution, testifying against her aunt and cousin. Because of her cooperation, she avoided jail time but was forced to repay every dollar of her portion of the stolen funds, and her professional accounting license was permanently revoked.
Dominic’s career in finance was over. He was charged with signing the fraudulent loan documents. Although his attorney managed to secure probation and community service instead of prison time, his name was blacklisted in every financial institution in the country. He was forced to move back into a tiny apartment, his luxury cars and country club memberships liquidated to pay off the massive corporate debts owed to Sterling Capital.
I, on the other hand, spent those three months surrounded by love, peace, and the absolute support of my father.
On a warm Tuesday afternoon in October, I gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl. I named her Rose, after my late mother.
My father was the first to hold her, tears of joy streaming down his face as he looked at his granddaughter.
"She has your eyes, Vivienne," he whispered, rocking her gently. "Strong, clear, and beautiful."
"She will never have to fight the battles I fought, Dad," I said, resting my head against the pillows of the private hospital suite.
"No, she won't," my father smiled. "Because you've already won them for her."

Dominic was granted strictly supervised visitation rights—one hour every two weeks, supervised by a court-appointed social worker, and only after he completed an intensive, year-long course in anger management and behavioral counseling. I never tried to erase him from Rose’s life entirely, but I established legal boundaries so strong and impenetrable that he could never, ever manipulate or hurt her.
For the first time in three years, I felt like I could breathe. The heavy, suffocating weight of the Vance family was gone, replaced by the clean, light air of freedom.
