Chapter 6 - The Projection of Truth

The video on the screen was dated today, 5:42 p.m. The location tag in the corner read: Bridal Suite - Sterling Grand.
The two hundred guests gasped as they saw a high-definition view of the bridal suite vanity. On the screen, Chloe was standing in her wedding dress, holding her massive diamond ring.
"Are you sure the cameras are off, Amanda?" Chloe’s voice was perfectly audible through the ballroom’s state-of-the-art surround sound system.
"Yes," Amanda’s voice replied from off-camera. "The wedding planner said the suite cameras are only active during high-security corporate events. They don't monitor private weddings."
"Perfect," Chloe sneered on screen. She took the million-dollar ring off her finger and handed it directly to Amanda. "Put it in your silver clutch. When we get to the reception, after the first dance, I’ll pretend it’s gone. I’ll accuse Vivienne. She’s so quiet, she’ll freeze up. It will be the perfect excuse to have her thrown out of the wedding and humiliated in front of everyone."
The crowd in the ballroom began to whisper furiously.
"Oh my God," a woman near the front whispered. "She set her up."
"That is sick," another guest muttered.
On the screen, Eleanor entered the room. "Is it done?" she asked.
"Yes, Mom," Chloe smiled, adjusting her veil. "Amanda has the ring. But make sure Dominic stays quiet when I make the accusation. I don't want him ruining this."
Eleanor laughed on the video, a cold, dry sound. "Don't worry about Dominic, darling. I raised him. He knows exactly who pays his bills. He always stays quiet when I tell him to."
The video ended.
The screen flickered, and a second video played. It was a live feed of the ballroom entrance from just ten minutes ago. It showed Amanda standing near the exit, her hands trembling as she clutched her silver bag.
"Mr. Harrison," Fiona said. "Please secure the evidence."
Two security officers walked directly over to Amanda. She didn't even try to run. She fell to her knees, sobbing hysterically, and handed her silver clutch to the officer.
The officer opened the bag, reached inside, and pulled out the six-carat diamond ring. He held it up under the glittering chandeliers.
The crowd went wild with murmurs of disgust.
Chloe’s groom, Lucas, stood frozen. He looked at the ring in the officer's hand, then at the video screen, and finally at his bride. He took a slow step backward, away from Chloe, as if she were a venomous snake.
"You... you staged this entire thing?" Lucas whispered, his voice trembling with shock and anger. "You ruined our wedding day just to humiliate your brother's wife?"
"Lucas, no! It's not what it looks like!" Chloe screamed, her perfect makeup ruined by sudden, frantic tears. "She deserved it! She walks around pretending she’s better than us! She never talks about her family, she wears those cheap clothes—I wanted to show everyone what she really is!"
"What she really is," Fiona Vance said, her voice cutting through Chloe's screams like a scalpel, "is the sole heiress to Sterling Capital. The company that currently holds ninety percent of your family’s business debt. And speaking of your business..."

Fiona swiped her tablet again.
The video of the bridal suite vanished, replaced by a massive, highly detailed financial spreadsheet.
