Chapter 5 - The Locking of the Doors

Before Chloe could utter another insult, a loud, metallic click resonated through the grand ballroom.

Every single exit door—heavy mahogany doors with brass handles—automatically locked. The emergency exit lights flickered once, then turned a steady, solid red.

The murmur of the crowd grew louder, filled with confusion and sudden anxiety.

"What is going on?" Eleanor demanded, looking toward the main entrance. "Why are the doors locked? Call hotel security! I want this woman arrested immediately!"

The double doors at the front of the ballroom slowly opened.

Four towering hotel security officers in sharp dark suits entered, moving with military precision. They immediately formed a perimeter around our group. Behind them walked the general manager of the Sterling Grand, Mr. Harrison, and a woman in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit carrying a high-tech digital tablet.

Eleanor puffed out her chest, assuming her wealth had finally bought her the obedience she deserved.

"Finally!" Eleanor barked, pointing at me. "Detain that woman. She has stolen my daughter’s million-dollar wedding ring and assaulted us by refusing to cooperate!"

Mr. Harrison completely ignored Eleanor. He walked directly to me, bowing his head slightly in deep respect.

"Mrs. Sterling, are you injured?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine concern. "We have medical staff standing by if you or the baby need immediate attention."

The entire room went dead silent.

Chloe blinked, her mouth open in a half-formed word. "Mrs... what? Her name is Vance! She’s my brother’s wife! She’s a nobody!"

I let go of my torn dress for a moment, letting the black Sterling corporate access card slip into Mr. Harrison's hand.

"My married name is Vance," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the silent ballroom. "But my maiden name—the name on the property deed of this hotel, the name on the corporate accounts of your silent partner, and the name on the investment firm that owns your family’s mountain of debt—is Sterling."

The woman in the charcoal suit stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply on the marble.

"My name is Fiona Vance—no relation to your family, thankfully," she said, looking at Eleanor with absolute disdain. "I am the chief legal counsel for Sterling Hospitality and Sterling Capital. I am here on behalf of Chairman Arthur Sterling."

She took off her expensive wool coat and gently draped it over my shoulders, covering my torn dress.

"As of five minutes ago," Fiona continued, tapping her tablet, "this entire venue is under a secure lockdown. No one leaves this ballroom. We are preserving a crime scene."

"A crime scene?" Dominic stammered, his face losing all its color. "Fiona... please, let's not make this a public spectacle. This is a family matter. We can resolve this privately."

"A family matter?" I asked, looking at Dominic with utter disgust. "You stood there and watched your mother and sister rip my clothes off my body in front of two hundred people. You watched them humiliate your pregnant wife, and your only concern was keeping your mother calm. You didn't choose family, Dominic. You chose the hand that feeds you."

"Vivienne, please—" Dominic stepped toward me, but a security officer instantly moved between us, his massive frame blocking Dominic completely.

"Do not approach the client, Mr. Vance," the officer said, his voice flat and dangerous.

"This is ridiculous!" Eleanor yelled, her voice screeching into a higher register. "So what if her father owns the hotel? That doesn't give you the right to hold us hostage! My daughter's ring was stolen! We have a right to search for our property!"

"You had no right to physically assault a pregnant guest," Fiona replied smoothly, raising her tablet. "And as for the 'stolen' ring... let’s look at the evidence, shall we?"

With a single swipe of Fiona's finger, the massive, fifty-foot projection screen behind the wedding stage—which had been showing a slideshow of Chloe and Lucas—flickered.
