Chapter 8 — The Letter He Never Wanted to Write

Detective Rachel Monroe placed the sealed envelope on the conference table.

No one spoke.

The evidence room felt unnaturally quiet as Daniel stared at his best friend's handwriting.

For Daniel—If Anything Happens to Me.

His chest tightened.

Ryan had always written the same way—clean block letters, every stroke deliberate. Daniel had seen that handwriting on birthday cards, business contracts, even the note Ryan left on the morning of Daniel's wedding.

Now it felt like a message from a ghost.

Rachel slid the envelope toward him.

"It was found on the passenger seat of Ryan's car."

Daniel looked up.

"Was there anything else?"

She shook her head.

"No wallet. No phone. No laptop."

"Any signs of violence?"

"None."

She paused.

"Which worries me more."

Daniel carefully broke the seal.

Inside was a single handwritten letter and a small USB flash drive.

He unfolded the paper with trembling hands.

Daniel,

If you're reading this, then my biggest mistake has finally caught up with both of us.

I know you think I betrayed you. The truth is worse.

I helped build the system they used to steal from your company. At first, I believed it was only a temporary accounting trick to hide investment losses. Vanessa convinced me no one would be hurt.

I was wrong.

By the time I understood the truth, I was already trapped.

Daniel stopped reading.

His throat tightened.

Olivia silently reached for his hand.

He continued.

Someone far more powerful than Vanessa controlled everything. She wasn't the mastermind. She was terrified of him. So was I.

The missing money wasn't stolen for luxury cars or vacations. Most of it disappeared into accounts I was never allowed to trace.

I tried to leave. They threatened people I loved.

Then they threatened you.

Daniel's breathing became uneven.

Rachel leaned closer.

"Keep going."

He swallowed.

If Olivia or the babies have been hurt...

I'm sorry.

None of this was supposed to reach your family.

The USB contains copies of every encrypted file I could save before they discovered me.

Don't trust anyone just because they're family.

Especially not the person you least suspect.

I'm running because staying alive is the only chance I have to testify.

If I fail...

Finish what I couldn't.

— Ryan

The room fell silent.

Daniel folded the letter slowly.

His eyes burned with a mixture of anger and grief.

Rachel picked up the USB drive.

"Our digital forensics team will examine this immediately."

Daniel nodded.

"He mentioned someone above Vanessa."

"He did."

Rachel looked thoughtful.

"And he warned you about someone else."

Olivia frowned.

"'The person you least suspect.'"

Daniel searched his memory.

His father?

No.

Michael had clearly signed documents, but Ryan's words didn't fit.

Someone they least suspected...

Who?

Two hours later, the forensic lab finished copying the contents of the USB.

Maya Chen called Rachel immediately.

"You need to see this."

Rachel and Daniel hurried into the lab.

Dozens of folders filled the screen.

Financial records.

Encrypted emails.

Hidden spreadsheets.

But one folder stood out.

Its name was simply:

Insurance

Rachel opened it.

Inside were scanned life insurance policies.

Olivia Carter.

Twin A.

Twin B.

Daniel frowned.

"Why would Ryan keep these?"

Maya clicked on the policy details.

The beneficiary wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Olivia.

It wasn't even a family trust.

Rachel read the name aloud.

Her face turned pale.

"...Vanessa Carter."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

Maya opened another file.

The policies had all been updated...

Just nine days before the assault.

Coverage exceeded twelve million dollars.

The room fell completely silent.

Olivia whispered in disbelief,

"She wasn't just trying to steal the trust fund..."

Rachel slowly nodded.

"No."

Her voice was almost inaudible.

"If these documents are genuine..."

She looked directly at Daniel.

"...your wife and both children were worth far more to Vanessa dead than alive."

No one spoke.

Then Maya opened the final encrypted file.

Instead of financial records...

A short video appeared.

Ryan looked directly into the camera.

He was bruised.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

Before anyone could press play...

The lab lights suddenly went dark.

Every computer screen went black.

Emergency alarms echoed through the building.

Someone had cut the power.

May you like

And somewhere in the darkness...

A single gunshot rang out.
