Chapter 6 — The Patriarch's Secret

The flowers lay scattered across the polished hospital floor.
White lilies.
Red roses.
A blue ribbon bearing the words "For Our New Miracles."
Michael Carter never noticed.
His hands trembled so violently that he had to brace himself against the wall.
Inside the room, Daniel's voice carried through the half-open door.
"...the forensic accountant confirmed one thing."
Olivia answered quietly.
"My father signed some of the financial transfers."
Michael closed his eyes.
It wasn't entirely true.
But it wasn't entirely false, either.
He had signed documents.
Just not the ones investigators were looking at.
Or so he had believed.
A nurse passing through the hallway noticed him.
"Sir?"
Michael quickly composed himself.
"I was just bringing flowers."
The nurse smiled sympathetically.
"They'll be happy to see you."
He forced a smile in return.

"No..."
He glanced once more toward Olivia's room.
"I think I'll come back later."
He turned and walked away before Daniel could see him.
Every step felt heavier than the last.
Forty minutes later, Michael unlocked the door to his private office at Carter Holdings.
He immediately crossed to a large oil painting hanging behind his desk.
It depicted the company's first headquarters, built by his grandfather nearly seventy years earlier.
To everyone else, it was simply artwork.
To Michael, it concealed a wall safe.
He entered the six-digit combination.
The heavy steel door swung open.
Inside rested family wills, property deeds, and sealed business contracts.
At the very back sat a plain gray envelope.
His hands hesitated before pulling it out.
Written across the front, in Vanessa's handwriting, were four words.
Only If Necessary.
Michael slowly opened it.
Inside was a stack of documents.
The first page bore Daniel's forged signature.
The second carried Michael's genuine one.
Then came a handwritten note.
Dad,
If anyone ever questions the consulting payments, tell them you signed because Daniel approved everything while he was overseas.
I'll fix the accounting before anyone notices.
Trust me.
— Vanessa
Michael felt physically ill.
He remembered that conversation.
Almost two years earlier.
Vanessa had arrived at his office in tears.
She claimed Daniel was rushing through international acquisitions and needed emergency approvals while traveling.
She insisted the paperwork couldn't wait.
Michael had trusted his daughter.
Without question.

Without verification.
Now he realized what he had actually signed.
Not routine approvals.
The foundation of an enormous fraud.
Across town, Detective Rachel Monroe received another report.
Forensic accountant Leo Bennett entered carrying fresh financial records.
"You need to see this."
Rachel looked up.
"More shell companies?"
"Worse."
He spread the papers across her desk.
"Vanessa wasn't spending the money."
Rachel frowned.
"Then where did it go?"
Leo pointed to dozens of wire transfers.
"She was paying someone."
"Who?"
He slid over a final document.
The receiving account belonged to an offshore investment company in the Cayman Islands.
Rachel studied the account holder's name.
Her eyes narrowed.
"This company doesn't exist."
"It does."
Leo shook his head.
"On paper."
"But it's controlled through anonymous directors."
Rachel leaned back.
"So we still don't know who received the money."
Leo nodded.
"Not until we subpoena the offshore bank."
Rachel sighed.
"That could take months."
"Unless..."
He tapped another page.
"...someone inside decides to cooperate first."
Back at the hospital, Daniel finally visited Olivia's room after spending nearly an hour in the NICU.
She looked exhausted but more alert.
"How's our little girl?"
He smiled for the first time all day.
"She grabbed my finger again."
Olivia laughed softly.
"Already stubborn."
"Definitely your daughter."
She squeezed his hand.
"And our son?"
Daniel's smile faded.
"The doctors say he's fighting."
Olivia closed her eyes.
"He has to."
"He will."
Neither of them truly knew if that was possible.
A gentle knock interrupted them.

Detective Rachel Monroe stepped inside.
"I'm sorry."
She held a folder against her chest.
"I wouldn't be here if it weren't important."
Daniel stood.
"What happened?"
Rachel looked at both of them.
"We've expanded the investigation."
Olivia frowned.
"Because of the trust?"
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
She opened the folder.
"This is much bigger than family theft."
She placed several photographs on the hospital bed.
Luxury properties.
Sports cars.
Private yachts.
All purchased through companies connected to Vanessa's fraudulent accounts.
Daniel stared in disbelief.
"She bought all this?"
"No."
Rachel's expression turned grim.
"She paid for someone else's lifestyle."
Olivia looked up.
"Do you know whose?"
Rachel hesitated.
"Not yet."
She pulled out one final photograph.
A surveillance image taken three weeks earlier.
It showed Vanessa sitting at an outdoor café.
Across from her sat a man wearing sunglasses and a dark baseball cap.
His face was partially hidden.
But Daniel recognized him instantly.
His breathing stopped.
"No..."
Olivia looked from the photograph to her husband.
"Daniel?"
His voice barely emerged.

"I know him."
Rachel leaned forward.
"Who is he?"
Daniel's face had gone completely pale.
"He was my best friend."
A painful silence filled the room.
Then Daniel whispered the name he hadn't spoken in nearly three years.
"Ryan Mercer."
May you like
And in that instant, Daniel realized the betrayal had never been about money alone.
It had begun with the one man he had trusted like a brother.
