Chapter 13 — The Visit No One Saw Coming

Daniel didn't sleep.
He couldn't.
Every truth he had believed for nearly four decades had collapsed in a single afternoon.
Michael wasn't his biological father.
His grandfather had hidden an entire past.
A man named Victor Hale—someone Daniel had never met—was suddenly the center of a conspiracy that had nearly killed his wife and children.
Yet despite everything...
One fact remained unchanged.
Michael had been there for every scraped knee, every birthday, every championship game, every heartbreak.
Blood could explain biology.
It could never replace love.
Just before dawn, Daniel returned to the hospital.
Olivia was awake, quietly watching their daughter sleep inside her incubator.
She immediately noticed his expression.
"You talked to Michael."
Daniel nodded.
"He told me everything."
Olivia reached for his hand.
"Does it change how you feel about him?"
Daniel looked through the nursery window where Michael stood rocking his tiny granddaughter under a nurse's supervision.
The elderly man smiled through tears as the baby yawned in his arms.
Daniel smiled sadly.
"No."
He squeezed Olivia's hand.
"He may not have given me life..."
"...but he gave me a family."
Olivia rested her head against his shoulder.
"Then don't let anyone take that away."
Meanwhile, Detective Rachel Monroe received an urgent call.
A prison guard's voice shook over the phone.
"Detective..."
"What happened?"

"It's Vanessa."
Rachel stood immediately.
"Is she alive?"
"Barely."
Fifteen minutes earlier...
A nurse making morning rounds at the county detention center had found Vanessa collapsed inside her cell.
Her breakfast tray remained untouched.
Foam lined the corners of her mouth.
An empty paper cup lay overturned beside the bed.
Paramedics fought to stabilize her as officers secured the area.
The prison doctor looked grim.
"Poison."
Rachel arrived moments later.
"How?"
"We don't know."
"The food?"
The doctor shook his head.
"Only her drink."
Someone had managed to poison a high-profile inmate under twenty-four-hour surveillance.
Rachel's stomach tightened.
Someone was cleaning up loose ends.
Vanessa was rushed into emergency surgery.
For nearly two hours, doctors worked to save her life.
Finally, one surgeon emerged.
"She survived."
Rachel exhaled.
"But she's unconscious."
"Will she recover?"
"We don't know."
The surgeon hesitated.
"If she wakes..."
"...there may be permanent neurological damage."
Rachel thanked him before walking toward the intensive care unit.
Outside the room, an officer handed her a sealed evidence bag.
"We found this hidden inside the paper cup."
Rachel opened it carefully.
Inside was a tiny waterproof capsule.
No larger than a vitamin.
She twisted it open.
A rolled strip of paper slid into her palm.
Only five handwritten words appeared.
Silence protects the Carter legacy.
Rachel stared at the message.
The handwriting wasn't Vanessa's.
It matched another sample already in evidence.
Ryan Mercer's.
Back at Carter Holdings, forensic analyst Maya Chen made another breakthrough.
She successfully restored fragments of deleted emails from Ryan's encrypted archive.
One email caught her attention immediately.
From: R.Mercer
To: V.Carter
Subject: He Knows
The body contained only one sentence.
"If Daniel learns who his father really is, Victor will come back."
Maya immediately called Rachel.
"He predicted this."
Rachel frowned.
"Predicted what?"
"Daniel discovering the truth."
"And?"
Maya looked at the recovered timestamp.
"The email was sent..."
"...fourteen months ago."
Rachel froze.
Fourteen months.
Long before Olivia became pregnant.
Long before the missing money was discovered.
Long before the assault.
Someone had been planning every move for over a year.
That evening, Ethan's condition suddenly improved.
Doctors carefully reduced the ventilator support.
For the first time since his birth...
He took several breaths on his own.
Daniel and Olivia stood beside him, holding each other's hands.
The attending neonatologist smiled.
"He's stronger than we expected."

Olivia burst into tears.
Daniel kissed her forehead.
"Our little fighter."
Just then, a nurse entered carrying an unmarked gift box.
"This was left at the front desk."
"No sender?"
She shook her head.
"It was addressed to Baby Ethan."
Daniel frowned.
He slowly opened the lid.
Inside lay a beautifully carved wooden music box.
Beside it rested a folded card.
Daniel unfolded it.
His blood ran cold.
The message contained only one sentence.
Happy birthday, son.
No signature.
None was needed.
Daniel looked toward the hospital entrance.
Somewhere...
Someone had been close enough to deliver the gift.
Close enough to watch his family.
Close enough to know Ethan's name.
May you like
Victor Hale had just announced that he was no longer hiding.
He was coming.
