Chapter 7 — The Friend Who Never Really Left

Daniel couldn't take his eyes off the photograph.

Ryan Mercer.

Even beneath the baseball cap and dark sunglasses, there was no mistaking him.

The way he leaned forward when listening.

The silver watch he wore every day.

The faint scar along his jaw from a college football injury.

It was Ryan.

Olivia watched the color drain from her husband's face.

"You’re certain?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"I'd know him anywhere."

Detective Rachel Monroe slid the photograph closer.

"When was the last time you saw him?"

Daniel let out a long breath.

"Almost three years ago."

Ryan Mercer had been more than a friend.

He had been family.

The two had met during their first semester of business school and built Carter Holdings' international division together after graduation.

When Daniel married Olivia, Ryan had stood beside him as best man.

He was the first person Daniel trusted with confidential contracts.

The first person given authority to negotiate multimillion-dollar deals.

Then, without warning, Ryan resigned.

He claimed he wanted to start a technology investment firm overseas.

The goodbye had been emotional.

Daniel had even invested half a million dollars in Ryan's new venture.

The company failed within a year.

Or so Ryan claimed.

After that, he disappeared.

Daniel hadn't heard from him since.

Now, seeing him sitting across from Vanessa...

Nothing made sense anymore.

Rachel broke the silence.

"Did Ryan have access to your financial systems?"

Daniel nodded.

"For years."

"Passwords?"

"Some."

"Digital signatures?"

Daniel hesitated.

"...Yes."

Rachel exchanged a meaningful glance with Detective Harris, who had just entered the room carrying another folder.

That single answer explained far more than Daniel realized.

At Financial Crimes Division headquarters, forensic analyst Maya Chen projected company records onto a large screen.

"The fraud began twenty-two months ago."

She clicked to the next slide.

"Three weeks after Ryan Mercer officially resigned."

Rachel frowned.

"So he left..."

"...but someone continued using credentials only Ryan possessed," Maya finished.

She highlighted login histories.

"Every unauthorized approval originated from the same encrypted administrator profile."

Daniel stared at the screen.

"Ryan built that security system."

Maya nodded.

"And he never fully surrendered administrator privileges."

The room fell silent.

Someone had deliberately left a back door open.

Meanwhile, Vanessa sat alone in her holding cell.

She had refused food.

Refused legal counsel.

Refused to answer questions.

But she couldn't refuse her own thoughts.

Everything had gone wrong.

Daniel wasn't supposed to come home early.

The camera wasn't supposed to survive.

The trust documents weren't supposed to be discovered.

Most importantly...

Ryan wasn't supposed to disappear.

She glanced toward the hallway as footsteps approached.

Her attorney entered carrying a briefcase.

Without speaking, he slid a folded newspaper across the table.

The headline froze her blood.

CARTER HOLDINGS LAUNCHES FULL INTERNAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION

Below it was another headline.

POLICE SEEK FORMER EXECUTIVE RYAN MERCER FOR QUESTIONING

Vanessa whispered,

"No..."

Her attorney looked confused.

"What's wrong?"

She ignored him.

Because if the police were looking for Ryan...

It meant Ryan had already vanished.

Again.

Back at the hospital, Daniel finally sat beside Olivia in silence.

She studied him carefully.

"You're blaming yourself."

He didn't answer.

"You think trusting Ryan caused this."

Daniel rubbed his face.

"I brought him into our company."

"You didn't know."

"I gave him access to everything."

"You couldn't have predicted betrayal."

Daniel looked toward the NICU through the glass window.

His son remained connected to machines.

His daughter slept peacefully nearby.

"My children are fighting for their lives because I trusted the wrong people."

Olivia reached for his hand.

"No."

He looked at her.

"They're fighting because greedy people made evil choices."

Before Daniel could respond, Rachel's phone rang.

She answered immediately.

Within seconds, her expression changed.

"What?"

She stood abruptly.

"Are you sure?"

The room fell silent.

She ended the call and looked directly at Daniel.

"We've located Ryan Mercer."

Daniel stood.

"Where?"

Rachel swallowed.

"His car was found abandoned at a private marina."

Daniel's pulse quickened.

"And Ryan?"

Rachel slowly shook her head.

"He's gone."

A patrol officer had searched the vehicle.

There were no signs of a struggle.

No blood.

No fingerprints except Ryan's.

Only one item remained inside.

A sealed envelope.

Across the front, written in Ryan's unmistakable handwriting, were six chilling words:

For Daniel—If Anything Happens to Me.
