Chapter 4 — A Father’s Promise

For a moment, Daniel couldn't hear anything except the pounding of his own heartbeat.

The surgeon's lips continued moving, but the words came slowly, as though underwater.

"...we delivered both babies by emergency Cesarean section."

Daniel forced himself to focus.

"Your daughter is breathing independently. She's small but stable."

He nodded mechanically.

"And my son?"

The surgeon sighed.

"He suffered severe oxygen deprivation before delivery. Our neonatal team has him on a ventilator."

Daniel felt his knees weaken.

"Is he..."

The doctor answered before he could finish.

"He's alive."

One sentence.

Four words.

Yet Daniel had never been so grateful to hear them.

"But the next twenty-four hours will be critical."

Daniel closed his eyes.

He had spent months imagining the first time he would meet his twins.

He had pictured balloons.

Laughter.

Photographs.

Instead, he was standing in a hospital hallway covered in his wife's blood, praying one of his children would survive the night.

An hour later, a nurse led him into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The room glowed beneath soft blue lights.

Tiny incubators lined the walls.

Machines hummed steadily.

Daniel stopped in front of the first incubator.

Inside lay his daughter.

She looked impossibly small.

Her tiny fingers curled instinctively around nothing.

A knitted pink cap covered wisps of dark hair.

"She's beautiful," the nurse whispered.

Daniel smiled despite everything.

"She looks like Olivia."

The nurse nodded.

"Would you like to hold her?"

He hesitated.

"I'm afraid I'll hurt her."

"You won't."

Minutes later, his daughter rested against his chest.

She weighed barely four pounds.

Yet somehow she carried the weight of his entire world.

A tear slid down his cheek.

"Hi, sweetheart."

Her tiny hand wrapped around his finger.

"I got here late..."

His voice broke.

"...but Daddy's here now."

After several minutes, the nurse gently guided him toward another incubator.

Daniel's smile disappeared.

His son lay surrounded by tubes.

A ventilator breathed for him.

Tiny sensors covered his fragile chest.

Unlike his sister, he did not move.

The steady beeping of the monitors filled the silence.

Daniel placed one trembling hand through the incubator opening.

He touched his son's impossibly small foot.

"I should've come home sooner."

No response.

"I should've protected you."

The ventilator continued its mechanical rhythm.

Daniel leaned closer.

"I promise you something."

His voice became steady.

"The person who did this..."

He swallowed.

"...will never come near this family again."

Across the hospital, Detective Rachel Monroe entered an interrogation room.

Vanessa Carter sat confidently at the metal table, dressed in fresh clothes provided after officers collected the ones she had worn during the assault.

She folded her arms.

"I've already told you."

Rachel placed a tablet on the table.

"Really?"

Vanessa smiled.

"My sister-in-law attacked me."

Rachel tapped the screen.

The hallway video began playing.

Vanessa's smile vanished.

The room fell silent as the footage clearly showed her striking Olivia.

Again.

And again.

Then grabbing her by the hair.

Finally came the recording of her threat.

"Give me the code... or I'll make sure neither baby survives today."

Vanessa's face turned ghostly pale.

She stared at the screen without blinking.

"That's impossible."

Rachel paused the video.

"You destroyed the camera."

"I watched it break."

"You destroyed the hardware."

Rachel leaned forward.

"Not the cloud backup."

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"You don't understand."

"Oh, I think I do."

Rachel slid another folder across the table.

Inside were copies of the forged trust documents and fraudulent financial transfers.

Vanessa looked down.

Then quickly looked away.

Rachel noticed.

"Recognize those?"

"No."

"Interesting."

She opened the first page.

"Because every shell company receiving these transfers lists your consulting firm as the final beneficiary."

Vanessa remained silent.

Rachel continued.

"Seven hundred thousand dollars."

Silence.

"Forged signatures."

Silence.

"Attempted murder."

For the first time since entering the room...

Vanessa looked afraid.

Then she quietly asked the one question Rachel had been waiting to hear.

"...How much does Daniel know?"

Rachel didn't answer.

She simply closed the folder.

Because she already knew something Vanessa didn't.

Daniel had just authorized forensic accountants to examine every financial transaction connected to his family's businesses over the last five years.

And when that audit was finished...

Vanessa's assault would become the smallest crime she had committed.
