Chapter 6 - WHY AMELIA HIRED LILY WITHOUT EVER MEETING HER
Amelia had not hired Lily.
She had done something subtler.
Before she died, she updated a list of preferred childcare agencies and left recommendations for me.
One was the agency that later sent Lily.
I had never noticed.
I thought my assistant chose it.
My assistant showed me an email from Amelia written nine months before her death:
If Victor ever needs help with Oliver, prioritize Northstar Nannies. Ask them specifically whether Lily Carter is still working in private care.
My stomach tightened.
Amelia knew Lily existed.
But Lily had never met her.
Why steer her toward us?
I found another note:
Lily deserves to know where she came from. Victor deserves to know too. I keep running out of time.
Amelia had been sick.
Maybe she intended to explain.
Then cancer accelerated.
She died before she did.
That was tragic.
But Serena’s reaction now made more sense.
She had discovered Amelia deliberately placed Lily in our orbit.
She interpreted it as another dead woman arranging my life.
Then she learned Lily had found the letter.
Fear turned into rage.
Still, one question remained:
What did Serena think would happen if Lily and I uncovered the whole truth?
The answer appeared in my adoption records.
The Blackwoods had not adopted a random infant.
They had adopted the biological son of Thomas Whitmore.
Amelia’s father.
I was Amelia’s half-brother.
