Chapter 5 - LILY’S MOTHER LEFT HER OWN BOX

Lily had almost nothing from Grace.
A few photographs.
Jewelry.
One locked metal box she never opened because she lost the key as a teenager.
After learning about the letter, she retrieved it from her apartment.
We did not break it open secretly.
It belonged to Lily.
She asked me to be present.
Inside:
Grace’s nursing-school certificate.
Tax records.
Photographs.
Letters.
And one envelope marked:
FOR LILY — WHEN YOU’RE READY.
Lily cried before opening it.
Grace had written shortly before dying from breast cancer.
The letter did not begin with my name.
It began:
Lily, there is something about your birth that I never told you.
Lily stopped reading.
I told her:
“You don’t have to continue.”
She did.
Grace wrote that she had been unable to have biological children after a medical complication in her twenties.
Lily was adopted.
Lily stared at me.
“What?”
Her own identity changed in one sentence.
Grace had never told her.
The adoption had been private.
No agency paperwork remained in Lily’s possession.
Then the next line:
Your biological mother was someone I was asked to protect.
Lily continued.
The mother was a teenager from a prominent family.
Pregnant.
Terrified.
Her parents wanted the baby erased from public record.
Grace helped arrange the private adoption.
Who was the baby?
Lily.
Who was the prominent family?
Whitmore.
Amelia’s family.
I felt cold.
Lily looked at me.
“Amelia?”
“No. She was too young.”
The letter named Amelia’s older sister.
Charlotte Whitmore.
I had heard of her.
She died in a car accident before I met Amelia.
Charlotte had given birth secretly at seventeen.
Grace adopted the child.
Lily.
That made Lily Amelia’s biological niece.
Oliver’s biological cousin through Amelia.
No wonder Amelia knew Grace.
No wonder she paid attention.
But that still did not explain my adoption.
Then the final page connected everything.
Grace wrote:
The Whitmores helped me adopt you because I had helped their family once before with another infant placement connected to the Blackwoods. I learned later that the first placement involved documents that should never have been altered. Amelia eventually discovered parts of it. She wanted the truth corrected.
First placement.
Me.
Lily's adoption was one secret.
Mine was another.
Same network.
Same families.
Different children.
And now Lily was caring for Oliver without either of us knowing she was his biological cousin.
Serena had discovered enough to fear that connection.

But why?
The answer was still missing.
