Chapter 10 - LILY LEARNS WHO SHE IS

Lily’s identity shift was almost as large as mine.
Grace Carter was her adoptive mother.
Charlotte Whitmore was her biological mother.
Charlotte’s biological father was Thomas Whitmore.
That made Lily Amelia’s niece.
Oliver’s first cousin through his mother.
And—because Thomas was also my biological father—Lily was biologically related to me too.
Our family tree became something nobody could explain without a diagram.
Lily hated that.
“Why is everyone related to everyone?”
“Bad decisions.”
“Whose?”
“Mostly dead rich people.”
That made her laugh.
Good.
She needed moments where genealogy stopped feeling like disaster.
Charlotte had died when Lily was three.
She never sought custody after Grace adopted Lily, but letters showed she had remained in contact with Grace privately.
She had been seventeen when Lily was born.
Her family had pressured her.
Grace gave Lily a stable childhood.
Messy.
Painful.
But not a stolen-child story.
Lily eventually received the full corrected history through legal processes and surviving evidence.
She kept the name Carter.
“Mom was Grace,” she told me.
“Yes.”
“Charlotte matters too.”
“Yes.”
“But Grace raised me.”
“Yes.”

Identity expanded.
It did not replace.
