Chapter 14 - SERENA FINALLY STOPS COMPETING WITH AMELIA
Three years later, Serena wrote me a letter.
Not asking to reconcile.
Good.
She wrote:
I spent years trying to defeat someone who was dead.
Then:
Every time Oliver reached for Lily, I saw proof that I would never be Amelia. Every time you kept one of Amelia’s things, I saw rejection. I turned grief into a competition nobody had asked me to enter.
Then the line that mattered:
I hit Lily because I wanted to punish her for being loved by a child.
No excuses.
She also admitted destroying Amelia’s letter.
Some fragments had actually survived in the outside trash compactor’s paper bag because staff had not yet removed it that night.
Enough to corroborate portions.
The original was gone.
But other records filled the gaps.
Serena had not destroyed the truth.
Only one copy of it.
She completed every legal and therapeutic obligation arising from the attack.
She rebuilt her life.
Eventually married someone else.
I heard through mutual friends.
