Chapter 8: The Truth About Nora's Mother Finally Came Out—And It Changed Everything She Believed About the Moretti Family

The chapel became silent.
Nora stared at Antonio.
“What did you say?”
Antonio smiled sadly.
“The ledger was never meant to protect the Moretti empire.”
He looked toward Giovanni.
“It was designed to destroy it.”
Giovanni slowly shook his head.
“That's a lie.”
“Is it?”
Antonio pulled a document from inside his coat.
“Read it.”
Lorenzo took it.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his expression changed.
Nora watched him.
“What is it?”
Lorenzo didn't answer.
She took the document from him.
It was a contract.
At the bottom were three signatures.
Giovanni Moretti.
Daniel Bell.
And Nora's mother.
Nora felt her hands tremble.
“What is this?”
Giovanni closed his eyes.
“A plan.”
“For what?”
“To dismantle the empire.”
Nora looked at him.
“You were going to destroy your own organization?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Giovanni's voice was quiet.
“Because I realized what it had become.”
Antonio laughed bitterly.
“Tell her everything.”
Giovanni stared at the floor.
“Years ago, your mother convinced me to change the organization.”
“Change it how?”
“Legitimate businesses. Legal investments. No political corruption. No trafficking. No violence against civilians.”
Nora stared.
“You wanted to leave that life.”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't you?”
“Because too many people depended on the old system.”
Antonio interrupted.
“And because your grandfather refused.”
Nora looked at Giovanni.
“Your father?”
Giovanni nodded.
“My father was the original architect.”
“So my mother wanted to destroy it.”
“Yes.”
“And my father helped her.”
“Yes.”
Nora's eyes filled with tears.
“What happened?”
Giovanni looked at her.
“Your grandfather discovered the plan.”
“And?”
“He ordered them to stop.”
“They refused.”
“No.”
Giovanni's voice broke.
“Your mother refused.”
Nora swallowed.
“What did he do?”
Giovanni couldn't answer.
Antonio did.
“He ordered your mother killed.”
Nora felt as though the entire room tilted.
“No.”
Lorenzo immediately moved toward her.
She stepped back.
“No.”
Antonio continued.
“Daniel escaped with you.”
Nora stared at her father.
Daniel looked devastated.
“I tried to take you.”
“Why didn't you?”
“I couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because I was being followed.”
He looked at her.
“If I had taken you, they would have found you.”
Nora cried.
“So you left me.”
“I left you with your mother.”
“And then she died.”
“Yes.”
“You could have come back.”
“I tried.”
“When?”
“Many times.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because every attempt put you in danger.”
Nora covered her face.
Twenty-four years of unanswered questions suddenly had answers.
They weren't comforting.
But they were answers.
She lowered her hands.
“Who killed my mother?”
Silence.
Then Giovanni said:
“I don't know.”
Antonio shook his head.
“I do.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Your grandfather ordered it.”
Nora stared.
“My grandfather?”
“Yes.”
“Then why did everyone say my mother died in an accident?”
“Because that was the story we created.”
Nora looked at Giovanni.
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“To protect me.”
“Yes.”
“But you still lied.”
“Yes.”
Her voice became quiet.
“I don't know if I can forgive you.”
Giovanni nodded.
“I don't expect you to.”
Lorenzo stepped beside Nora.
Antonio watched them.
“You see?”
“What?”
“This is why I brought you here.”
Nora frowned.
“Why?”
“Because the Moretti empire is dying.”
Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.
“What are you talking about?”
Antonio handed him another document.
“The old organization is collapsing.”
Lorenzo read it.
Several companies had been secretly transferred.
Accounts had been emptied.
Properties had changed ownership.
Lorenzo looked stunned.
“When did this happen?”
“Months ago.”
“Who did it?”
Antonio smiled.
“Richard Caldwell.”
Nora froze.
“He's alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“New York.”
Lorenzo looked at Antonio.
“Why help us?”
Antonio's smile disappeared.
“Because I made a mistake twenty-four years ago.”
“What mistake?”
“I thought power was worth protecting.”
He looked at Nora.
“I was wrong.”
Nora stared at him.
“So what do you want?”
“Nothing.”
“That isn't true.”
Antonio sighed.
“I want the family to survive.”
“Why?”
“Because despite everything, you're my family.”
Nora couldn't process the word.
Family.
She had spent years believing she had almost none.
Now she had discovered an entire hidden history.
Lorenzo walked toward Antonio.
“You kidnapped Daniel.”
“To make you listen.”
“You could have asked.”
“You wouldn't have listened.”
“Maybe not.”
Antonio nodded.
“I knew.”
Then he looked at Daniel.
“I'm sorry.”
Daniel looked at him.
“So am I.”
Suddenly, footsteps echoed outside the chapel.
Lorenzo turned.
His security team rushed inside.
“Mr. Moretti!”
“What?”
“We have a problem.”
“Caldwell?”
The guard nodded.
“He's at the estate.”
Nora's heart stopped.
“Richard?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“He arrived twenty minutes ago with a legal team.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“Legal team?”
The guard handed him a document.
“Court order.”
Lorenzo read it.
His expression became cold.
“He's claiming ownership of the estate.”
Nora stared.
“Can he do that?”
“Apparently.”
Antonio laughed quietly.
“He's using the old contracts.”
“But they're fraudulent,” Lorenzo said.
“Not all of them.”
Giovanni suddenly spoke.
“There's one document he cannot have.”
“What?”
“The original inheritance agreement.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
“Where is it?”
Giovanni stared at Nora.
“With her.”
Nora frowned.
“With me?”
“The necklace.”
Nora touched the necklace she had taken from her mother's box.
Giovanni nodded.
“Open it.”
Her hands trembled.
She twisted the pendant.
It opened.
Inside was a tiny rolled piece of paper.
Lorenzo unfolded it.
His eyes widened.
“What?”
He looked at Nora.
“This transfers the entire legitimate Moretti estate into the name of your mother.”
Nora stared.
“My mother?”
“And after her death…”
He swallowed.
“…to her only child.”
Nora's heart pounded.
“You.”
The chapel fell silent.
Antonio smiled.
Richard Caldwell hadn't been trying to destroy Lorenzo.
He had been trying to control Nora.
Because legally, she owned the future of the Moretti fortune.
And if Richard could control Nora, he could control everything.
Lorenzo looked at her.
“You're the heir.”
Nora shook her head.
“I don't want it.”
“You don't have to.”
She looked at him.
“What happens now?”
Lorenzo took her hand.
“Now we take your life back.”
They returned to the estate before dawn.
Richard Caldwell was waiting in the grand foyer.
He wore an expensive suit.
His smile was confident.
But the moment he saw Nora walk through the doors beside Lorenzo, his expression changed.
“Nora.”
She stopped.
“Hello, Richard.”
He looked at the necklace around her neck.
His face lost its color.
“You found it.”
Nora's eyes narrowed.
“You knew about this?”
Richard smiled.
“You have no idea what you're holding.”
She stepped forward.
“I know enough.”
Richard looked at Lorenzo.
“You think she belongs to you?”
Lorenzo's expression remained calm.
“No.”
He looked at Nora.
“She belongs to herself.”
Richard's smile disappeared.
Then he said something that made everyone freeze.
“You're too late.”
“What?”
Richard removed his phone.
He pressed a button.
A live video appeared.
Nora saw Lily.
Her baby was sleeping peacefully in a crib.
But someone was standing beside her.
A masked figure.
Nora screamed.
“LILY!”
Lorenzo grabbed her before she could run.
Richard smiled.
“Now, Nora, let's discuss the terms.”
And for the first time, the woman who had spent her entire life being protected realized she would have to become the person who protected everyone else.
The quiet life she had once wanted was gone forever.
But perhaps that was exactly what she needed.
Because Richard had made one terrible mistake.
May you like
He had underestimated a mother.
And he had just given Nora a reason to fight.
