Chapter 6: Her Father Returned After Twenty-Four Years—But His First Warning Was That Lorenzo Could Never Be Trusted
Nora couldn't move.
She couldn't breathe.
She couldn't even blink.
The man standing across the storage room looked exactly like the photographs.
Older, of course.
His hair was gray at the temples.
There were lines around his eyes.
But there was no mistaking him.
Her father.
The man she had spent her entire childhood believing was dead.
The man she had once imagined as a ghost.
A memory.
A story her mother refused to tell.
He was standing ten feet away.
Alive.
“Nora,” he whispered again.
Her lips parted.
“Dad?”
The word sounded foreign.
The man closed his eyes.
For one second, his composure disappeared.
Then tears appeared.
“Yes.”
Nora took one step forward.
Lorenzo caught her hand.
“Wait.”
She looked at him.
“That's my father.”
“I know.”
“Let me go.”
“Not yet.”
Her father raised both hands.
“Lorenzo is right.”
Nora froze.
“You know him?”
The older man gave a tired smile.
“I knew his father.”
He looked toward Giovanni.
For the first time in twenty-four years, the two men stood face to face.
Giovanni's eyes filled with emotion.
“Daniel.”
Daniel Bell nodded.
“Giovanni.”
The silence between them carried decades of history.
Finally, Giovanni said:
“I thought you were dead.”
“I wanted you to.”
“Why?”
“Because people were watching.”
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“Who?”
Daniel looked at him.
“The people who built their fortunes on the ledger.”
Lorenzo's expression hardened.
“You mean my father's associates.”
“Some of them.”
“And Richard Caldwell?”
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
“Especially him.”
Nora felt her stomach twist.
“What did Richard do?”
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“Your mother and I discovered that Richard had been stealing from the organization.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“How?”
“Your father kept duplicate records.”
Giovanni nodded.
“He did.”
Daniel continued.
“Richard wasn't simply taking money. He was selling information.”
“To whom?”
“Anyone willing to pay.”
Nora whispered:
“And my mother found out?”
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
Daniel looked away.
“She wanted to expose him.”
“Then why didn't she?”
“Because she discovered something worse.”
Nora waited.
Daniel's voice became quieter.
“Richard had been using the Moretti organization to manipulate political and financial networks across New York.”
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
“That's why the ledger mattered.”
“Yes.”
“What was your role?”
Daniel sighed.
“I was the one who kept the books.”
“So you knew everything.”
“Not everything.”
“But enough.”
“Yes.”
Nora stepped forward.
“Why did you leave us?”
Daniel looked at her.
“I didn't.”
“You disappeared.”
“I was forced to.”
“By Richard?”
“Yes.”
Nora's eyes filled with tears.
“Mom told me you abandoned us.”
Daniel's face broke.
“I would never have abandoned you.”
“Then why didn't you come back?”
“Because every time I tried, someone close to me died.”
Nora stared at him.
“My mother?”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“She died believing you were safe.”
Nora covered her mouth.
“I was.”
“Yes.”
He looked at her.
“Until Richard realized who you were.”
Lorenzo's expression changed.
“That's why she was targeted.”
Daniel nodded.
“And why he sent her into the Moretti estate.”
Nora looked at him.
“What?”
Daniel's eyes became serious.
“Richard knew exactly where you were going.”
She felt dizzy.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“He sent me there deliberately.”
“He needed you near the Moretti family.”
“Why?”
“Because the ledger couldn't be opened without a key.”
Nora looked down.
The brass key.
“317.”
Daniel nodded.
“Your mother gave it to you before she died.”
“But I don't remember.”
“You were too young.”
He reached into his coat.
Then he pulled out a small photograph.
Nora stared.
It showed her as a child.
She was sitting beside her mother.
Her mother was holding the same brass key.
Nora whispered:
“She gave it to me.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she knew one day the truth would come looking for you.”
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Where have you been all these years?”
Daniel looked at him.
“Watching.”
Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.
“Watching what?”
“You.”
“What about me?”
“You became exactly what your father feared.”
Giovanni's expression hardened.
“Careful.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don't blame him.”
Then he looked at Nora.
“But I won't pretend his world is safe for you.”
Nora felt torn between them.
“Dad, Lorenzo has protected me.”
“I know.”
“He protected Lily.”
“I know.”
“He saved my life.”
Daniel nodded.
“And I am grateful.”
He looked directly at Lorenzo.
“But protection isn't the same as freedom.”
Lorenzo didn't respond.
Nora looked between them.
“Then what do you want me to do?”
Daniel walked toward her.
“I want you to leave.”
Her heart stopped.
“With Lily?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Anywhere far away.”
Nora shook her head.
“No.”
“Nora.”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“I spent my whole life being moved around because other people were afraid. My mother made decisions for me. You disappeared to protect me. Richard manipulated me.”
Her voice trembled.
“I won't let another man decide where I belong.”
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time, he smiled.
“You really are your mother's daughter.”
Lorenzo's expression softened.
Nora reached for his hand.
“I choose my own life.”
Daniel nodded.
“Then you need to know the final part.”
“What?”
“Richard isn't the person you should fear most.”
Lorenzo immediately stiffened.
“Who is?”
Daniel looked toward Giovanni.
“Someone inside the Moretti family.”
Giovanni went completely still.
“Impossible.”
“No.”
Daniel's voice was firm.
“I saw the evidence.”
“Who?”
Daniel opened his mouth.
Before he could answer, a loud crash came from the hallway.
The security team shouted.
Lorenzo moved immediately.
He pushed Nora behind him.
A man rushed through the doorway.
Lorenzo's security team restrained him.
The man was one of the estate guards.
Lorenzo recognized him.
“Marco?”
The guard struggled.
“I didn't do anything!”
Lorenzo stared.
“Search him.”
A second guard found a small device hidden beneath Marco's jacket.
A tracking transmitter.
Lorenzo's face went cold.
“Who gave you this?”
Marco said nothing.
Daniel looked at him.
Then he whispered:
“He's not the one.”
Everyone turned.
“What?” Lorenzo asked.
Daniel pointed toward the hallway.
“The transmitter was planted.”
“By whom?”
Daniel's face changed.
“Your uncle.”
Lorenzo froze.
“My uncle died twelve years ago.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Giovanni.
“You were told he died.”
Giovanni's face went white.
“No.”
Daniel nodded.
“He's alive.”
Then the building's emergency doors slammed shut.
A voice came over the intercom.
“Lorenzo.”
Everyone froze.
The voice was familiar.
Old.
Cold.
Patient.
“I believe it's time we talked about your father's inheritance.”
Giovanni whispered one name.
“Antonio.”
The lights went out.
And Nora realized that the war surrounding her family had just become much larger than she had ever imagined.
Chapter 7: Lorenzo's Missing Uncle Returned From the Dead—And He Claimed Nora Was the Only Person Who Could Save the Moretti Empire
The lights returned three minutes later.
But Antonio Moretti was gone.
So was Daniel.
Nora stood in the center of the storage facility, staring at the empty doorway.
“Where did he go?”
Lorenzo's security team searched every hallway.
Nothing.
No trace.
No vehicle.
No camera footage.
It was as if both men had disappeared.
Nora looked at Lorenzo.
“Did your uncle take my father?”
“I don't know.”
“You said he died.”
“I believed he did.”
“Why?”
“My father told me he was killed.”
Giovanni looked exhausted.
“I was wrong.”
Lorenzo turned toward him.
“You knew Antonio was involved?”
“I knew he was dangerous.”
“That isn't what I asked.”
Giovanni didn't answer.
Lorenzo's voice hardened.
“You've hidden enough from me.”
Giovanni looked at his son.
“I thought I was protecting you.”
“You've been protecting everyone except me.”
Nora stepped between them.
“Stop.”
Both men looked at her.
She took a breath.
“We don't have time to fight each other.”
Lorenzo nodded.
He turned to his security team.
“Back to the estate.”
The drive home was silent.
Nora held Lily's blanket in her lap.
She couldn't stop thinking about her father.
He had appeared.
Then vanished.
And now her uncle was alive.
The past was becoming impossible to distinguish from the present.
When they reached the estate, the security system was fully activated.
Lorenzo personally escorted Nora into the house.
“Stay here.”
“No.”
He looked at her.
“I mean it.”
“So do I.”
“Nora.”
“If Antonio wants me, hiding me won't stop him.”
Lorenzo sighed.
“You're becoming impossible.”
“You liked that about me.”
“I still do.”
For the first time that night, she smiled.
Then the smile faded.
“Find my father.”
“I will.”
“And tell me the truth.”
“I will.”
“Even if it hurts?”
He nodded.
“Especially then.”
Later that evening, Giovanni asked Nora to meet him in the library.
He looked older than he had that morning.
“Your father was right about one thing,” Giovanni said.
“What?”
“There was someone inside the family.”
“Antonio?”
“Yes.”
“What did he want?”
“Power.”
“Why did he disappear?”
“He believed my father should have given him control.”
“And when he didn't?”
“He tried to take it.”
Nora sat across from him.
“What happened?”
“Antonio organized a rebellion.”
“Against you?”
“Against your father.”
Giovanni's eyes darkened.
“He failed.”
“What happened to him?”
“I believed he escaped overseas.”
“But you told everyone he died.”
“I needed Lorenzo to believe the threat was gone.”
Nora stared.
“Did Lorenzo know?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Lorenzo was twenty years old.”
“And you wanted to protect him.”
“Yes.”
Nora looked toward the fireplace.
“So this family has spent decades lying to one another.”
Giovanni smiled sadly.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Fear.”
She thought about that.
Then she said:
“I'm tired of fear.”
Giovanni looked at her.
“So am I.”
That night, Nora went to the nursery.
Lily was awake.
Nora picked her up.
“I promise you,” she whispered, “I'm going to give you a life where nobody has to lie to protect you.”
A voice came from the doorway.
“You can't promise that.”
Nora turned.
Lorenzo stood there.
She frowned.
“Were you listening?”
“Yes.”
She smiled.
“You're terrible at privacy.”
“I own the house.”
“That doesn't make it okay.”
He stepped closer.
“You're right.”
He looked at Lily.
Then at Nora.
“I don't want our daughter raised in this world.”
Nora was surprised.
“You don't?”
“No.”
“Then why stay in it?”
Lorenzo looked at the floor.
“Because leaving isn't as simple as walking away.”
“Why?”
“Because people depend on me.”
“Your organization?”
“Yes.”
“And if you leave?”
“Someone worse takes over.”
Nora stared at him.
“Then change it.”
He looked at her.
“How?”
“Start with yourself.”
Silence.
Lorenzo smiled faintly.
“You make it sound easy.”
“It won't be.”
She stepped closer.
“But maybe you don't have to become your father.”
His expression changed.
“You think I am like him?”
“No.”
She touched his cheek.
“I think you're afraid you will be.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
Nora kissed him.
It was gentle.
No promises.
No demands.
Just reassurance.
When they separated, he whispered:
“I love you.”
Nora's heart stopped.
He had never said it.
Not directly.
She smiled through tears.
“I love you too.”
For one brief moment, the world felt right.
Then a phone rang.
Lorenzo's expression changed.
He answered.
“Speak.”
A pause.
His eyes moved toward Nora.
“What?”
Another pause.
“Send it to me.”
He ended the call.
“What happened?”
He showed her the message.
A photograph.
Daniel.
Bound to a chair.
Nora gasped.
Underneath it was a message:
Bring the ledger to the old Moretti chapel at midnight. Come alone.
Lorenzo immediately shook his head.
“No.”
Nora stared at the photograph.
“My father.”
“I know.”
“We have to go.”
“It's a trap.”
“I know.”
“We're not going.”
Nora looked at him.
“If we don't go, they hurt him.”
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
“I won't risk you.”
“And I won't abandon my father again.”
He stared at her.
Then Giovanni entered.
He saw the photograph.
His face hardened.
“Antonio.”
Lorenzo nodded.
Giovanni looked at Nora.
“There's another reason he wants the ledger.”
“What?”
“The ledger doesn't merely contain names.”
“What else?”
Giovanni walked to an old cabinet.
He removed a document.
“Your father found a second account.”
“What account?”
“Money.”
“How much?”
“Enough to destabilize several companies.”
Nora looked confused.
“Why would Antonio care?”
“Because the account contains ownership records.”
“Of what?”
Giovanni looked at Lorenzo.
“Everything.”
Nora stared.
“Everything?”
“Warehouses. Shipping companies. Properties. Investments.”
Lorenzo understood.
“The person controlling that account could legally claim a fortune.”
Giovanni nodded.
“And Antonio believes Nora can unlock it.”
Nora's stomach tightened.
“Why me?”
“Because your father designed the security.”
“What does that mean?”
Giovanni looked toward her.
“The system recognizes your mother's bloodline.”
Nora stared.
“I don't understand.”
“You are the final key.”
At midnight, they arrived at the old chapel.
Lorenzo refused to let Nora enter alone.
The doors creaked open.
Candles burned inside.
Daniel sat at the altar.
Alive.
Antonio stood behind him.
Nora's heart raced.
Antonio looked older than she expected.
Silver hair.
Dark eyes.
A calm smile.
“Hello, Nora.”
Lorenzo stepped forward.
“Let him go.”
Antonio smiled.
“You sound exactly like your father.”
“You're not touching her.”
Antonio looked at Nora.
“I don't want to hurt her.”
“Then why bring her here?”
“Because she deserves the truth.”
Nora stepped forward.
“What truth?”
Antonio smiled.
“Your mother didn't die because of the Moretti family.”
He paused.
“She died because she discovered who your real enemy was.”
Nora's heart pounded.
“Who?”
Antonio looked toward Giovanni.
“Your grandfather.”
Nora froze.
Giovanni's face went pale.
Antonio continued.
“The ledger was never created to protect the Moretti empire.”
May you like
He looked directly at Nora.
“It was created to destroy it.”
