Chapter 4: The Night Lorenzo Discovered the Secret Hidden Beneath His Father’s Silence
Three weeks after Lily was born, Nora finally began to believe that happiness was not something she had to apologize for.
For months, she had expected someone to take it away.
Every time Lorenzo left the estate, she wondered if he would return.
Every time Giovanni disappeared into a therapy session, she feared his health would suddenly decline.
Every time Lily cried in the middle of the night, Nora's first instinct was to check whether something was wrong.
Fear had become a habit.
But slowly, the Moretti estate had become home.
And that frightened Nora more than anything.
Home was dangerous because losing it would hurt.
One quiet morning, Nora stood beside the nursery window with Lily sleeping against her shoulder.
Outside, snow covered the estate grounds.
The world looked peaceful.
Almost impossibly peaceful.
She gently rocked her daughter.
“You're going to have a very different life than your mother,” she whispered.
Lily made a tiny sound.
Nora smiled.
“You won't have to worry about rent. You won't have to worry about whether there is enough food in the refrigerator. And you definitely won't have to scrub somebody else's floor while you're pregnant.”
A soft knock came at the door.
Nora turned.
Giovanni stood there.
He no longer needed the wheelchair all the time.
His physical recovery had progressed faster than any doctor expected. He could walk short distances with a cane, and his speech, although still rough, had become surprisingly strong.
He looked at Lily.
“May I?”
Nora smiled.
“Of course.”
Giovanni entered and approached the crib.
He leaned over his granddaughter with an expression Nora had never seen on the feared former Don.
Tenderness.
Pure tenderness.
“She has his eyes,” Giovanni said.
“Lorenzo's?”
Giovanni nodded.
“Unfortunately.”
Nora laughed.
Giovanni smiled.
Then his expression changed.
He looked toward the hallway.
“Has Lorenzo told you anything?”
Nora's smile faded.
“About what?”
“Nothing.”
“Giovanni.”
He sighed.
“You have learned quickly.”
“I have lived around secretive men for months.”
“Then you already know that is not a useful skill.”
Nora studied him.
“What are you worried about?”
Giovanni looked toward the window.
“For years, I believed the greatest danger to my family came from outside.”
“And now?”
“Now I believe the danger has been sitting inside our walls.”
A chill moved through Nora.
Before she could ask another question, footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Lorenzo appeared.
He was still wearing the dark suit he had worn to Manhattan.
His tie was loosened.
His expression was exhausted.
But the moment he saw Nora, something softened.
“You're awake.”
“I've been awake for hours.”
He walked toward her.
“How is Lily?”
“Sleeping.”
He bent and kissed Nora's forehead.
Then he kissed Lily's tiny head.
For a few seconds, nothing existed beyond the three of them.
Then Giovanni cleared his throat.
Lorenzo straightened.
“Father.”
“We need to talk.”
Lorenzo's expression immediately hardened.
“Not here.”
“Why?”
“Because Nora doesn't need this.”
Giovanni looked directly at Nora.
“She already needs to know.”
Lorenzo said nothing.
Nora felt her stomach tighten.
“What happened?”
Lorenzo walked toward the nursery door and closed it.
“There was another security breach.”
Nora's heart began beating faster.
“When?”
“Last night.”
“You didn't tell me.”
“Because I handled it.”
“What kind of breach?”
Lorenzo looked at his father.
Giovanni answered.
“Someone accessed the old records.”
Nora frowned.
“What records?”
“The Moretti family archives.”
She didn't understand.
Lorenzo crossed the room.
“The archives contain financial records, property records, old contracts, names of associates, and information about people who were once connected to my father.”
“And someone broke in?”
“No.”
Lorenzo's voice was quiet.
“Someone with access copied them.”
Nora's blood ran cold.
“Who?”
“That is what we're trying to find out.”
Giovanni slowly lowered himself into a chair.
“There's something else.”
Lorenzo looked at him.
Giovanni's eyes moved toward Nora.
“Someone has been searching for information about Lily.”
The room went silent.
Nora instinctively held her daughter closer.
“Why?”
“We don't know.”
“Then how do you know?”
Lorenzo walked to her.
He placed both hands gently on her shoulders.
“Because three different people have asked questions about her in the last ten days.”
Nora's voice trembled.
“What kind of questions?”
“Her birth date.”
“Why?”
“Her father's name.”
Nora swallowed.
“Brody?”
“We assumed that at first.”
“And now?”
Lorenzo's jaw tightened.
“Now I don't think anyone is interested in Brody.”
He paused.
“They're interested in you.”
Nora stared at him.
“Me?”
“Yes.”
She shook her head.
“That doesn't make sense.”
“I know.”
“I'm nobody.”
Giovanni's expression sharpened.
“No, Nora.”
She looked at him.
“You are not nobody.”
He reached into the pocket of his robe and removed a small envelope.
He placed it on the table.
“This was hidden in my study.”
Nora stared at it.
Her name was written across the front.
Nora Bell.
Her maiden name.
She hadn't used it in years.
“What is that?”
“A letter.”
“From whom?”
“I don't know.”
Lorenzo picked it up.
He opened it carefully.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his expression changed.
Nora noticed immediately.
“What?”
He didn't answer.
“Lorenzo.”
He handed her the letter.
Her hands shook as she read.
There were only three sentences.
You were never supposed to survive.
Your mother knew the truth.
Ask Giovanni what happened twenty-four years ago.
Nora looked up.
“What does this mean?”
Giovanni closed his eyes.
For several seconds, he didn't speak.
Then he whispered:
“I was hoping you would never have to know.”
Lorenzo's face became hard.
“Father.”
Giovanni looked at his son.
“Twenty-four years ago, your mother and I were involved in a situation that nearly destroyed this family.”
Nora's heart raced.
“What does that have to do with me?”
Giovanni looked at her.
“Everything.”
Before Nora could ask another question, the nursery door suddenly opened.
A security officer stood there.
“Mr. Moretti.”
Lorenzo turned.
“What?”
“We found something.”
“What?”
The guard looked uncomfortable.
“Come downstairs.”
Lorenzo's eyes narrowed.
“Tell me.”
“We found a hidden room beneath the east wing.”
Giovanni's face went pale.
Lorenzo looked at him.
“You knew?”
Giovanni slowly shook his head.
“No.”
The security officer continued.
“There are photographs inside.”
“Of what?”
The guard looked at Nora.
“Her.”
Nora stopped breathing.
Lorenzo stepped in front of her.
“Get everyone out of the east wing.”
“Yes, sir.”
“And nobody touches anything until I get there.”
The guard nodded and left.
Nora looked at Lorenzo.
“What kind of photographs?”
“I don't know.”
“I need to see them.”
“No.”
“Lorenzo—”
“No.”
His voice was firm.
“I won't expose you to something dangerous just because you're curious.”
“This is about me.”
“I know.”
“Then I have the right to know.”
He stared at her.
Nora stared back.
Finally, Giovanni spoke.
“She should see them.”
Lorenzo turned.
“Father.”
“If the past has found her, hiding it won't protect her.”
Lorenzo closed his eyes.
He knew Giovanni was right.
Ten minutes later, they entered the east wing.
The hidden room was behind a panel concealed inside an old library.
Inside were boxes.
Hundreds of them.
Photographs.
Documents.
Newspaper clippings.
Old letters.
And on the wall—
pictures of Nora.
Not recent pictures.
Pictures from childhood.
Nora walked toward them in disbelief.
Her little face stared back at her from photographs she had never seen.
Her mother.
Her childhood home.
A hospital.
A man standing beside her mother.
Nora touched one photograph.
“Who is he?”
Giovanni stepped forward.
His face had lost all color.
“That…”
He swallowed.
“…is your father.”
Nora froze.
“My father died before I was born.”
“That is what you were told.”
She looked at him.
“By whom?”
Giovanni didn't answer.
Lorenzo picked up another photograph.
His eyes narrowed.
“This man.”
Nora looked.
“What?”
“I know him.”
“Who?”
Lorenzo stared at the photograph.
“His name is Victor Hale.”
Giovanni nodded.
“He was one of my closest advisers.”
“Was?”
“He betrayed me.”
Nora's stomach dropped.
“What does my father have to do with him?”
Giovanni looked toward the photographs.
“Your father wasn't merely connected to Victor.”
He took a slow breath.
“He was the man who saved my life.”
Nora felt the floor shift beneath her.
“You knew my father?”
“For twenty-four years.”
“Then why did nobody tell me?”
“Because he disappeared.”
“When?”
“The night you were born.”
Nora covered her mouth.
Lorenzo looked at his father.
“You never told me any of this.”
“I was protecting you.”
“From what?”
Giovanni stared at Nora.
“From the people who wanted her dead.”
The room fell silent.
Nora looked at the photographs again.
There was one final picture.
Her mother holding baby Nora.
Beside her stood a younger Giovanni.
And beside Giovanni stood a young man who looked almost exactly like Nora's father.
On the back of the photograph were five handwritten words:
Keep the girl away from Moretti.
Nora turned the picture over.
Her hands began shaking.
“Who wrote this?”
Giovanni whispered:
“Your mother.”
Lorenzo took the photograph.
His eyes moved toward Nora.
“Then the question isn't why they came after you.”
He looked toward the locked doorway.
“The question is what your mother knew that made her afraid of my family.”
At that exact moment, the security system screamed.
An alarm echoed through the estate.
Then every light went red.
Lorenzo immediately pulled Nora behind him.
A guard's voice came through the intercom.
“Mr. Moretti, we have movement at the northern gate.”
“How many?”
“Three vehicles.”
Lorenzo's expression became lethal.
“Lock the estate.”
The doors slammed shut throughout the mansion.
Nora held Lily tightly.
Giovanni stood beside her.
Lorenzo looked at both of them.
“Whatever happens next, stay together.”
A gunshot echoed from somewhere outside.
Then another.
And on the wall behind them, one of the old photographs suddenly fell to the floor.
Underneath it was a hidden message scratched into the wood.
Four words.
SHE KNOWS THE LEDGER.
Nora stared at it.
“I don't know what that means.”
Giovanni did.
His eyes filled with terror.
“The ledger…”
May you like
He whispered.
“…was never destroyed.”
