Chapter 9 - Lorenzo Offered His Empire for Her Father—But Elara Refused to Let Him Sacrifice the KingGabriel Moretti had spent his entire life being underestimated.

He was Antonio Moretti’s illegitimate son.

Born 18 months before Lorenzo.

Recognized privately.

Never publicly.

Given money.

Education.

A place at the table.

But never the name in the way Lorenzo received it.

Lorenzo inherited the house.

The organization.

The loyalty.

Gabriel inherited proximity.

For years, he smiled.

He advised.

He toasted victories.

And secretly, he fed information to Sebastian Vale.

Not because he loved Vale.

Because Black Rook offered what his father never had.

Recognition.

The location arrived at midnight.

A private railway terminal abandoned beneath Manhattan.

Victor would be exchanged for 1 thing.

Not money.

Not territory.

Lorenzo’s complete control of the Moretti organization.

Gabriel wanted signed documents transferring legal companies, accounts, and holdings.

He wanted Lorenzo to order the capos to recognize him.

“He has lost his mind.”

Stefano paced the strategy room.

“No capo accepts Gabriel.”

“They will if Lorenzo commands it.”

Elara stood over the table.

Stefano stared at her.

“You cannot be considering this.”

“I’m considering everything.”

Lorenzo entered.

“I agreed.”

Everyone turned.

Elara’s face changed.

“What?”

“I called Gabriel.”

Lorenzo placed his phone down.

“I give him control.”

“He returns Victor.”

“No.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

“Elara.”

“No.”

“He is your father.”

“And this is your family.”

“You think I care about an empire more than your father’s life?”

“No.”

Her voice cracked.

“That is exactly why I cannot let you do it.”

Lorenzo approached.

“I can rebuild.”

“You might not survive.”

“I can survive anything.”

“You almost died in a warehouse yesterday.”

“I survived that.”

“Stop.”

The word came out as a shout.

Everyone went silent.

Elara’s eyes filled.

“Stop talking like your life is something you can keep spending for me.”

Lorenzo stared.

She stepped closer.

“You saved me from the snow.”

“You erased my father’s debt.”

“You went to war with Rossi.”

“You opened your family archive.”

“You gave up Carlo.”

“And now you are offering everything you built.”

Her voice softened.

“When do you understand that I do not need another person destroying himself to keep me alive?”

Lorenzo’s anger faded.

Elara touched his chest.

“I need you alive beside me.”

He covered her hand.

“Then give me another move.”

She looked toward the board.

And found one.

At 2:30 a.m., Elara called Gabriel.

“I accept.”

He laughed.

“Lorenzo already did.”

“I’m changing the terms.”

“You have no authority.”

“Then why did Vale spend months trying to kill me?”

Silence.

Elara knew she had him.

“You don’t want Lorenzo’s empire.”

She continued.

“You want legitimacy.”

“You want everyone who called you bastard to watch Lorenzo surrender to you.”

Gabriel’s voice hardened.

“Careful.”

“That is why the exchange must be public.”

Lorenzo looked at her.

This had not been part of their discussion.

Gabriel asked:

“Public how?”

“Bring the captains.”

“All of them.”

“You want a coronation?”

“I want witnesses.”

Gabriel became interested.

Elara continued.

“Lorenzo transfers power in front of the family.”

“Victor walks away.”

“And me?”

Gabriel asked.

“What do you get?”

“My father.”

“No.”

He laughed.

“You want more.”

Elara smiled despite the terror inside her.

“You really have been watching me.”

“Tomorrow.”

Gabriel gave the location.

“8:00 p.m.”

He disconnected.

Lorenzo stared at her.

“What are you doing?”

“Giving him exactly what he wants.”

“And then?”

Elara looked toward the chessboard.

“Taking it away.”

The railway terminal smelled of rust and standing water.

At 8:00 the following evening, 17 Moretti captains stood in a semicircle beneath broken lights.

Gabriel waited on the old platform.

Victor sat in a chair beside him.

His hands were bound.

Sebastian Vale stood farther back.

Finally visible.

Finally committed to the board.

Elara entered beside Lorenzo.

No visible weapons.

Stefano followed carrying a metal case containing transfer documents.

Gabriel smiled.

“Brother.”

Lorenzo said nothing.

Gabriel’s attention shifted to Elara.

“Snow Queen.”

“I prefer Elara.”

“So modest.”

“Untie my father.”

“After.”

Gabriel gestured toward the assembled captains.

“Let us make history.”

Lorenzo stepped forward.

Gabriel produced a document.

“Sign.”

Lorenzo took the pen.

Elara watched Vale.

Not Gabriel.

Vale was nervous.

That interested her.

A man who had spent decades predicting everyone in the room should not have been nervous unless something had moved beyond his prediction.

Lorenzo signed.

Gabriel smiled.

“Now kneel.”

The room changed.

Lorenzo slowly looked up.

Gabriel’s smile widened.

“You wanted witnesses.”

He gestured toward the captains.

“Let them witness.”

Elara understood.

This had never been about power.

Humiliation was the objective.

Lorenzo started to lower himself.

“Elara.”

Victor’s voice.

She looked at him.

He shook his head.

Then she saw his fingers.

Bound behind the chair.

Moving.

Not randomly.

Victor was tapping.

A childhood code.

Numbers.

Elara translated.

CAMERA.

She looked up.

Small lenses surrounded the terminal.

Vale was recording everything.

Why?

Evidence?

Blackmail?

Then she understood.

“Lorenzo.”

He stopped.

“Don’t kneel.”

Gabriel raised his gun.

“That was not your decision.”

“Yes, it was.”

Elara stepped forward.

“This entire ceremony is fake.”

Vale’s expression changed.

Gabriel frowned.

“What?”

“The documents do not matter.”

She looked at the cameras.

“Vale needs Lorenzo publicly humiliated because he is selling the footage.”

Vale moved toward the exit.

Mateo’s hidden teams blocked it.

Gabriel turned.

“Selling it to whom?”

Elara smiled.

“There it is.”

Vale’s composure broke.

Gabriel aimed at him.

“What did you do?”

Vale remained silent.

Elara continued.

“Black Rook does not build kings.”

“It destabilizes them.”

She looked at Gabriel.

“He promised you the Moretti empire.”

Then toward the captains.

“But he also promised pieces of it to at least 4 other families.”

Murmurs spread.

Gabriel’s face changed.

“You’re lying.”

“Am I?”

Elara removed a phone.

She pressed play.

Adrian Cross’s recorded interrogation filled the terminal.

Vale’s plans.

The territory sales.

The staged war.

Gabriel stared at Sebastian Vale.

“You used me.”

Vale sighed.

“Gabriel.”

“You used me.”

“You were useful.”

That was the wrong answer.

Gabriel fired.

Vale moved.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

Chaos exploded.

Lights went out.

Gunfire erupted.

Elara dropped behind a concrete barrier.

Lorenzo tackled Gabriel.

The brothers crashed onto the platform.

Victor tipped his chair sideways.

Elara crawled toward him.

Bullets struck the columns.

“Dad!”

She reached him.

She cut his restraints with a small blade hidden inside her sleeve.

“Can you run?”

“I’m 64, not 94.”

“Good.”

They moved.

Across the terminal, Gabriel struck Lorenzo with the pistol.

Lorenzo staggered.

Gabriel raised the weapon.

Elara saw it.

“Lorenzo!”

She fired.

The shot hit Gabriel’s forearm.

His gun fell.

Lorenzo drove him against the wall.

He wrapped 1 hand around his brother’s throat.

Gabriel laughed despite the blood.

“Do it.”

Lorenzo tightened his grip.

“You always wanted to.”

“No.”

Gabriel smiled.

“Father chose you.”

“He loved you.”

“He tolerated me.”

“That was his failure.”

Gabriel’s expression flickered.

Lorenzo released him.

Gabriel slid to the ground.

“I’m not killing my brother because our father failed both of us.”

Mateo’s men surrounded him.

Gabriel looked up.

For the first time, he did not look powerful.

He looked tired.

Vale, however, was disappearing through a maintenance tunnel.

Elara saw him.

She followed.

“Elara!”

Lorenzo shouted.

But she was already running.

Vale reached an old service platform.

No exit.

He turned.

Blood covered his shoulder.

Elara raised her pistol.

“So.”

Vale breathed heavily.

“The queen.”

“It’s over.”

“Nothing is over.”

He smiled.

“Kill me and Black Rook becomes mythology.”

“Spare me and I destroy you.”

Elara kept the weapon steady.

“You still think those are the only 2 moves.”

“What else is there?”

She heard footsteps behind her.

Federal agents entered.

Carlo’s testimony had died with him.

But the archive had not.

Before the exchange, Elara had sent copies of every Black Rook record to federal prosecutors.

Vale stared.

For the first time, true fear entered his face.

“You gave them everything?”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed decades of leverage.”

“Yes.”

“You destroyed Moretti secrets too.”

Elara’s voice remained calm.

“Yes.”

Lorenzo reached the platform behind her.

He had known.

He had approved.

Vale looked between them.

“You sacrificed your own empire.”

Lorenzo smiled.

“Apparently I’ve become sentimental.”

Agents handcuffed Vale.

As they led him away, he looked at Elara.

“You think you won?”

Elara lowered her gun.

“No.”

She looked toward her father.

Then Lorenzo.

“I think I stopped playing your game.”

Vale disappeared into the tunnel.

The terminal became quiet.

Gabriel was arrested.

Victor was safe.

Black Rook’s records were in federal hands.

But Elara knew what came next.

Investigations.

Subpoenas.

Indictments.

The Moretti empire would not survive unchanged.

She looked at Lorenzo.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“The files will expose your operations too.”

“I know.”

“You could lose everything.”

Lorenzo approached.

He touched the blue diamond on her hand.

May you like

“Not everything.”

And for once, Elara understood exactly what he meant.
