Chapter 6 - The Man Who Knew Her Father’s Greatest Secret Came to Dinner UnarmedThe invitation arrived 4 days later.

It was not delivered by courier.

It appeared inside Elara’s bedroom.

That fact caused 3 security officers to lose their positions before noon.

A black envelope rested on her pillow.

Silver lettering covered the front.

ELARA VANCE.

Inside was an address.

An abandoned private club on East 63rd Street.

Thursday.

8:00 p.m.

COME ALONE IF YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY YOUR MOTHER DIED.

Elara read the final sentence 6 times.

Her mother, Miriam Vance, had died when Elara was 11.

Official cause:

Car accident.

Rain.

Loss of control.

Impact against a concrete barrier.

Elara remembered her father identifying the body.

She remembered him returning home with his shirt buttoned incorrectly.

She remembered the silence that followed.

Victor never recovered.

The gambling began less than a year later.

Elara walked into the library holding the invitation.

Lorenzo was meeting with Stefano.

He dismissed him after seeing her face.

“What happened?”

Elara placed the card down.

Lorenzo read it.

His eyes darkened.

“No.”

“You don’t even know what I was going to say.”

“Yes, I do.”

He tore the invitation in half.

“You were going to suggest walking voluntarily into another trap.”

“I need to know.”

“You need to stay alive.”

“My mother may have been murdered.”

“And whoever sent this knows exactly which emotional lever to pull.”

Elara paced away.

“I spent 20 years believing she died because of rain.”

She turned.

“What if that was a lie?”

Lorenzo watched her.

“What does Victor say?”

“I haven’t told him.”

“Why?”

“Because I know what his face will look like.”

She swallowed.

“And I’m afraid that will give me the answer.”

Victor’s face did exactly that.

When Elara showed him the invitation, he closed his eyes.

Not confusion.

Not disbelief.

Guilt.

Elara stepped backward.

“You knew.”

Victor said nothing.

“Dad.”

Her voice sharpened.

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

“For 20 years?”

“I had no proof.”

“You let me believe it was an accident.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

Elara laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

“Everyone keeps using that word.”

Victor flinched.

“Tell me everything.”

He did.

Black Rook had begun as a consulting project funded through shell corporations.

Victor and 4 other mathematicians believed they were developing risk models for international commodities.

Then Victor discovered the variables hidden inside the datasets.

Murders.

Arrests.

Police deployments.

Drug prices.

Political donations.

Territorial boundaries.

Black Rook was not predicting markets.

It was predicting criminal empires.

More dangerously, it could identify the precise moment when an organization became vulnerable to takeover.

Victor attempted to destroy his portion of the research.

2 weeks later, his university funding disappeared.

A month later, allegations of academic misconduct surfaced.

His reputation collapsed.

Then Miriam began receiving threats.

“She wanted us to leave Boston.”

Victor’s eyes filled.

“I was arrogant.”

He stared at his hands.

“I thought intelligence could protect us.”

Elara could barely breathe.

“The accident.”

Victor nodded.

“The brakes failed.”

Silence.

“I found out afterward.”

Elara turned away.

She pressed both hands against the table.

Her mother’s death rearranged itself inside her memory.

Not an accident.

A consequence.

“What happened to Black Rook?”

“I don’t know.”

Victor looked toward Lorenzo.

“The original organization disappeared.”

“Who ran it?”

Victor hesitated.

“A man named Sebastian Vale.”

Lorenzo became completely still.

Elara noticed.

“You know him.”

Lorenzo did not answer immediately.

“Vale is a ghost.”

Stefano spoke from the doorway.

He had entered without anyone noticing.

“Former intelligence contractor.”

“Financial broker.”

“Fixer.”

“Depending on which story you believe.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

“My father dealt with him.”

Elara looked between them.

“What kind of deal?”

Lorenzo’s silence answered.

“Tell me.”

“My father used Black Rook.”

The words came slowly.

“Years ago.”

Elara stared.

“For what?”

“To destroy competing families without starting open wars.”

Lorenzo approached her.

“I was 16.”

“I had nothing to do with it.”

“But your family did.”

“Yes.”

Elara looked at Victor.

Then Lorenzo.

The 2 men she loved most had each possessed pieces of a truth that shaped her entire childhood.

Neither had told her.

She walked out.

Lorenzo followed.

“Elara.”

She continued down the corridor.

“Elara.”

He caught her wrist.

She spun.

“Do not.”

He released her immediately.

“I did not know about your mother.”

“I know.”

“That matters.”

“Right now?”

Her eyes burned.

“I don’t know what matters.”

She walked away.

At 7:42 Thursday evening, Elara left the estate.

Not alone.

Lorenzo would never have permitted that.

Instead, they constructed the illusion.

A vehicle dropped her 2 blocks from the private club.

Mateo’s team occupied neighboring rooftops.

Stefano waited in an unmarked van.

Lorenzo was somewhere she could not see.

That had been Elara’s condition.

“If I see you, so can they.”

She entered the club at exactly 8:00.

The building appeared abandoned from outside.

Inside, candles burned.

A table had been set for 2.

An elderly man sat at the far end.

Sebastian Vale looked nothing like Elara expected.

No intimidating bodyguards.

No theatrical scar.

He was perhaps 67.

Silver hair.

Navy suit.

Thin glasses.

He stood when she entered.

“Professor Vance’s daughter.”

“Elara.”

“Of course.”

His smile was almost paternal.

“Please.”

He gestured toward the chair.

“Sit.”

“I’m not hungry.”

“Neither am I.”

Vale sat.

“This is theater.”

He lifted a wineglass.

“Powerful men adore theater.”

“I came for my mother.”

His smile disappeared.

“Yes.”

“Miriam.”

He looked almost sad.

“She deserved better.”

“Did you kill her?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Elara studied his face.

“You ordered it.”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Vale leaned back.

“Your father believes Black Rook was an organization.”

“It wasn’t?”

“It was an idea.”

He tapped the table.

“Organizations have leaders.”

“Ideas have believers.”

He smiled faintly.

“Black Rook became useful to many people.”

“Politicians.”

“Intelligence agencies.”

“Criminal families.”

“Corporations.”

“Your father tried to destroy the model.”

“But mathematics is difficult to kill.”

Elara remained standing.

“My mother.”

Vale sighed.

“She discovered something Victor did not.”

“What?”

“The Moretti family was not simply a client.”

Elara’s stomach tightened.

“Then what were they?”

“An investor.”

She stared.

Vale continued.

“Lorenzo’s father financed the project.”

Elara said nothing.

“Your mother found records.”

“She planned to expose them.”

“Then she died.”

Elara’s hands became cold.

“You expect me to believe Lorenzo’s father murdered my mother?”

“I expect you to investigate.”

Vale reached into his jacket.

Immediately, red laser dots appeared across his chest from hidden Moretti shooters.

He noticed.

A small smile.

“Your fiancé is cautious.”

He slowly removed a flash drive.

He placed it on the table.

“Everything is there.”

Elara did not touch it.

“What do you want?”

“Excellent.”

Vale looked pleased.

“Victor taught you properly.”

“People offering truth usually want something.”

“What do you want?”

Vale’s eyes hardened.

“Lorenzo Moretti’s empire.”

Elara almost laughed.

“You expect me to betray him?”

“No.”

Vale leaned forward.

“I expect you to discover that he inherited an empire built partly on your mother’s blood.”

He looked toward the dark windows.

“Then I expect you to decide for yourself what love is worth.”

Elara picked up the drive.

Vale smiled.

“Tell Lorenzo something for me.”

“What?”

“The board belongs to the player willing to sacrifice everything.”

Elara turned away.

Vale spoke again.

“And Elara?”

She stopped.

“Your mother’s brakes were cut by a Moretti soldier.”

The words entered her like a knife.

“His name was Carlo Moretti.”

Elara turned.

Lorenzo’s uncle.

A man whose portrait still hung in the Moretti family gallery.

She left without another word.

Lorenzo met her outside.

One look at her face was enough.

“What did he say?”

Elara stared at the man she loved.

At the house symbol on his cuff links.

At the name he carried.

“Did your father finance Black Rook?”

Lorenzo froze.

That was answer enough.

“You knew.”

“I discovered it 2 days ago.”

“And you didn’t tell me.”

“I was verifying—”

“You knew.”

“Elara.”

She stepped backward.

“My mother died because of your family.”

“We do not know that.”

“Carlo Moretti cut her brakes.”

Lorenzo went still.

Behind him, Stefano looked stunned.

Elara held up the flash drive.

“Vale says the proof is here.”

Lorenzo looked at it.

Then at her.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“Elara, it may contain malware.”

“I’m not giving it to you.”

His expression hardened.

“Why?”

Her eyes filled.

“Because for the first time, Lorenzo…”

She closed her hand around the drive.

“…I don’t know which side of the board you’re standing on.”

The sentence hurt him.

She saw it.

But Lorenzo did not become angry.

He did not order his men to take the drive.

He simply stepped aside.

“Then find out.”

Elara stared.

“Use your own computer.”

“Your own people.”

“Do not trust me.”

His voice became quiet.

“Not until I earn it again.”

She walked past him.

May you like

For the first time since the night he carried her from the snow, Lorenzo did not follow.

And for the first time since becoming his queen, Elara wondered whether the greatest threat to their future had been buried inside the Moretti house long before she arrived.
