Chapter 4 - Stefano’s voice came over communications.

The firefight lasted approximately 30 seconds.

When emergency lighting activated, 8 of Camila’s guards were down.

The others had fled.

Camila was gone.

“She went through the rear exit.”

Stefano jumped from the catwalk.

“Elara, stay here.”

“No.”

Elara picked up a discarded pistol.

The weapon felt unfamiliar and heavy.

“She is mine.”

Elara ran into the snow.

Ahead, a white fur coat moved between containers.

Camila was limping.

Blood marked the snow behind her.

Elara followed to the end of the pier.

Black harbor water churned below.

“Stop!”

Elara raised the pistol with both hands.

Camila turned.

Hatred distorted her face.

“You ruined everything.”

She raised her own weapon.

“You filthy rat.”

Camila pulled the trigger.

Click.

Nothing.

She tried again.

Empty.

Camila stared at the pistol.

Elara kept her weapon trained on her.

“Shoot.”

Camila backed toward the edge.

“Do it.”

Elara did not move.

“You cannot.”

Camila laughed.

“You are a servant.”

Her voice became contemptuous again.

“You exist to serve women like me.”

“I served you.”

Elara’s voice remained quiet.

“I froze for you.”

A pause.

“I bled for you.”

Her grip tightened.

“But I am finished serving.”

“Then shoot me.”

“No.”

Elara lowered the weapon.

Camila’s laugh became high and manic.

“I knew it.”

She smiled.

“Weak.”

“I am not shooting you.”

Elara looked past her.

“Because he is.”

Camila froze.

She turned.

A figure emerged between the containers.

Lorenzo.

His suit was torn.

Soot covered part of his face from the battle at the estate.

He carried no visible weapon.

His attention remained entirely on Camila.

“You attacked my home.”

His voice carried through the wind.

Camila stepped backward.

“You threatened my family.”

Lorenzo continued toward her.

Camila’s heels reached the edge of the pier.

“Lorenzo…”

Her voice changed.

“Please.”

He stopped approximately 3 feet away.

“It was business.”

She began to plead.

“Only business.”

“Elara is not business.”

Lorenzo’s voice became colder.

“She is personal.”

He looked toward Elara.

“Do you want her dead?”

The decision was entirely hers.

Elara looked at Camila.

At the white fur.

At the woman who had sent her into a storm and left her to freeze.

“I do not want her dead.”

Lorenzo waited.

“I want her to understand what it feels like.”

He nodded.

Then looked toward Camila.

“You like the cold?”

“No.”

Camila’s eyes widened.

“Lorenzo, no.”

He stepped forward.

Then pushed her.

Camila screamed as she fell approximately 20 feet from the pier into the freezing harbor.

The black water swallowed the sound.

Lorenzo looked down for several seconds.

Then he turned away.

He crossed to Elara.

The gun had begun shaking in her hands.

He removed it carefully and threw it into the snow.

Then he pulled her against him.

“You’re safe.”

His face pressed into her neck.

“We won.”

“My father?”

Her voice was muffled against his chest.

“Stefano has him.”

Lorenzo tightened his arms.

“He is safe.”

Elara closed her eyes.

The adrenaline began to leave her.

“Let’s go home.”

Lorenzo kept her close.

And this time, when Elara heard the word home, she understood that he meant the Moretti estate.

By early spring, the snow had disappeared from the gardens of the Moretti estate.

The west terrace, once buried beneath drifts where Elara had nearly died, now overlooked green lawns and the first flowers of the season.

But the estate itself had changed more than the garden.

Elara stood inside the master suite before a full-length gilded mirror.

She wore a midnight-blue silk gown designed in Milan.

The fabric followed her body before falling toward the floor.

Her hair had been arranged in an intricate chignon.

A diamond necklace rested against her collarbone.

Heavy.

Cold.

Unmistakably valuable.

Only 2 months earlier, she had entered this room holding cleaning supplies.

Back then, she had barely looked at her reflection.

The woman in the mirror now seemed like someone else.

“Ready?”

Elara turned.

Victor Vance stood in the doorway.

He looked younger than he had at the shipyard.

The hollow cheeks caused by years of gambling and stress had filled out.

His suit was immaculate.

His eyes were clear again.

Victor had not merely stopped gambling.

He had become the Moretti family’s chief financial strategist.

The mind that once disappeared into poker tables now worked on the finances of a billion-dollar organization.

Elara smoothed the gown.

“I don’t know.”

Victor approached.

“There are 300 people downstairs.”

She swallowed.

“The heads of the 5 families.”

Her eyes moved toward the mirror again.

“They know what I was.”

Her voice lowered.

“They know I scrubbed their floors.”

Victor took both of her hands.

“Let them remember.”

Elara looked at him.

“It will make them respect what happened even more.”

His expression became proud.

“You did not inherit this position.”

A pause.

“You earned it.”

Elara breathed slowly.

“Checkmate.”

Victor smiled.

“Checkmate.”

The Moretti ballroom was filled with black tuxedos, expensive gowns, and dangerous conversations.

This was not simply a celebration.

It was a summit.

The Rossi family had collapsed.

Their territory had to be redistributed.

Every important figure in the room wanted to know who Lorenzo Moretti intended to place beside him in the new order.

The music stopped.

At the top of the grand staircase, the heavy oak doors opened.

Conversation ended immediately.

“Ladies and gentlemen…”

The announcer’s voice filled the hall.

“The head of the family, Lorenzo Moretti.”

Lorenzo stepped into view.

He wore a black velvet tuxedo.

His hair was swept back.

He did not need to raise his voice or display a weapon to control the room.

His presence was enough.

He looked across the crowd.

Then he turned.

Instead of descending, Lorenzo extended 1 hand into the shadow behind him.

Elara stepped forward.

A collective reaction moved through the ballroom.

Rumors had already spread.

The maid.

The woman from the snow.

The strategist behind the destruction of the Rossi operation.

Some had begun calling her the Snow Queen.

Seeing her was different.

She did not look like a servant.

Her posture was straight.

Her expression was composed.

Her eyes moved through the ballroom with the same analytical attention that had once found hidden tunnels on a shipping map.

Seasoned men looked away first.

Elara placed her hand in Lorenzo’s.

“Do not look down.”

His voice was intended only for her.

“Look at them.”

Elara met his eyes.

“Make them acknowledge you.”

They descended.

1 step at a time.

Elara recognized people.

The Don from New Jersey who once ignored her while she poured his wine.

The banker’s wife who had once criticized a fingerprint on a glass.

None of them criticized her now.

Some bowed.

At the bottom of the staircase, the crowd opened a path.

Lorenzo stopped in the center of the ballroom.

A microphone was brought to him.

“Thank you for coming.”

His voice remained calm.

“The Rossi family has been dissolved.”

No one moved.

“Their territories have been absorbed.”

He allowed the statement to settle.

“Many of you have asked how.”

Lorenzo looked around the room.

“How did we anticipate their shipments?”

“How did we move ahead of a family larger than ours?”

Then he looked at Elara.

“Strategy.”

His voice became firmer.

“Brute force is a hammer.”

A pause.

“But an empire cannot be built with only a hammer.”

He stepped slightly aside rather than positioning Elara behind him.

“You also need a scalpel.”

Lorenzo looked toward the assembled families.

“A mind that sees the board 10 moves in advance.”

His hand rested at the small of Elara’s back.

“This is Elara Vance.”

Eyes turned toward her.

“Some of you remember her pouring your wine.”

Lorenzo’s expression hardened.

“You misunderstood what you were seeing.”

He looked directly at several men.

“While she poured your wine, she was watching your hands.”

Then he turned toward Elara.

“She is my partner.”

His voice carried through the room.

“My strategist.”

Another pause.

“And from tonight forward, she is the lady of this house.”

The ballroom was silent.

“Any disrespect shown to her…”

Lorenzo looked across the crowd.

“…is a declaration of war against me.”

Even the ice inside the glasses seemed loud.

Then Stefano began applauding.

Victor joined him.

The captains followed.

Slowly, the entire room filled with applause.

It was not merely congratulations.

It was acknowledgment.

Submission to the new arrangement.

Lorenzo handed away the microphone.

Then he turned toward Elara.

The public performance was finished.

“You did it.”

His voice lowered.

“You own the room.”

Elara’s composure weakened slightly now that no one was speaking to her directly.

“I don’t care about owning the room.”

She looked up at him.

“I only wanted to know that I belong here.”

A pause.

“With you.”

Lorenzo’s expression softened.

The Don disappeared for a moment.

What remained was the man who had once sat on the floor beside the fire desperately trying to warm life back into her body.

“Elara.”

He looked around the estate.

“You walked these halls when they felt empty.”

His attention returned to her.

“You brought life into this house.”

His voice became quieter.

“You did not only save my business.”

He touched her face.

“You saved me.”

Lorenzo reached into his pocket.

He removed a small box.

He did not kneel.

He remained standing in front of her and opened it.

Inside was a ring unlike any conventional engagement piece.

The setting had been designed in the form of a chess queen.

At its center was a large flawless blue diamond matching the color of Elara’s gown.

“I told you the queen is the most powerful piece on the board.”

Lorenzo held the ring between them.

“Will you be mine?”

Tears filled Elara’s eyes.

She could not answer immediately.

So she nodded.

Lorenzo slid the ring onto her finger.

Perfect fit.

Then he leaned toward her ear.

“The chessboard is still in the library.”

Elara began to smile.

“It is your move.”

She laughed.

The sound came without fear or restraint.

Elara caught the lapels of his tuxedo and pulled him toward her.

They kissed while the ballroom continued around them.

Outside, snow began falling again.

Not the violent whiteout of Christmas night.

Light flakes drifted slowly beyond the windows.

This time, Elara did not fear the cold.

She was no longer the maid who had knelt in the snow searching for an earring that had never been lost.

She stood beside Lorenzo Moretti as his strategist, his partner, and the acknowledged lady of his house.

May you like

The maid was gone.

The queen remained.
