Chapter 7 - She Found Her Mother’s Name in the Moretti Ledger—Then Lorenzo Gave Her the GunThe files on Sebastian Vale’s drive were real.

That was the first terrible thing.

The second was that they were incomplete.

Elara spent 11 hours inside a secure room with Victor and 2 independent forensic analysts.

Lorenzo did not enter.

He did not ask for updates.

He waited.

The documents showed payments from shell companies controlled by Lorenzo’s father, Antonio Moretti, to Black Rook between 1999 and 2008.

Millions of dollars.

Consulting fees.

Research grants.

Offshore transfers.

Then Elara found Miriam Vance.

Not her name.

A designation.

SUBJECT M.V.-17.

She opened the file.

Photographs appeared.

Her mother leaving a grocery store.

Her mother entering a school.

Her mother holding 11-year-old Elara’s hand.

Elara stopped breathing.

Victor turned away.

There were surveillance reports.

Daily movements.

Phone records.

A final instruction.

CONTAIN EXPOSURE.

AUTHORIZED: C.M.

Carlo Moretti.

Elara stood so quickly the chair fell backward.

She ran to the bathroom.

She vomited.

Lorenzo heard.

He had been waiting outside despite promising not to interfere.

He entered only after Victor opened the door.

Elara stood over the sink.

Her face was white.

Lorenzo approached.

She raised 1 hand.

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“Was Carlo working for your father?”

“Yes.”

“Did your father know what he did?”

“I don’t know.”

“That is not good enough.”

“I know.”

Elara turned.

“You have an archive.”

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“Every old family has one.”

She wiped her mouth.

“Documents people are too afraid to destroy.”

“Insurance.”

“Secrets.”

“Your father kept records.”

Lorenzo did not deny it.

“Where?”

“Elara—”

“Where?”

He looked at her for several seconds.

Then:

“Beneath the chapel.”

Victor stared.

“There is a chapel?”

“East garden.”

Lorenzo turned toward the door.

“Come.”

The underground archive had not been opened since Antonio Moretti’s death.

Lorenzo unlocked 3 separate steel doors.

Inside were shelves containing nearly 50 years of Moretti history.

Ledgers.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Weapons.

Audio tapes.

Secrets capable of destroying careers and families.

Elara searched for 7 hours.

At 2:11 in the morning, she found Carlo’s personal ledger.

Miriam Vance appeared on page 83.

Elara read the entry.

Then reread it.

Her knees weakened.

Lorenzo caught the book before it fell.

“What?”

Elara could not speak.

He read.

M.V. INCIDENT COMPLETED.

A second line followed.

A.M. UNAWARE OF METHOD.

PROJECT DIRECTOR APPROVED DIRECTLY.

Lorenzo looked up.

“My father didn’t order it.”

“No.”

Elara’s voice shook.

“Vale did.”

The room became silent.

Sebastian Vale had told the truth carefully.

Carlo Moretti had killed Miriam.

But Vale had omitted the person who ordered Carlo.

Himself.

Elara laughed.

The sound was broken.

“He wanted me to blame you.”

Lorenzo closed the ledger.

“He wanted us divided.”

“Why?”

“Because together we are difficult to beat.”

Lorenzo looked at the shelves.

“A Moretti army and a Vance mind.”

Understanding spread across Elara’s face.

“He is afraid of us.”

For the first time in days, Lorenzo touched her.

Only her hand.

He waited to see whether she would pull away.

She did not.

“I’m sorry.”

His voice was low.

“For what my family did.”

“You didn’t do it.”

“My name did.”

“That isn’t the same thing.”

“It is when you inherit power from that name.”

Elara studied him.

“What are you going to do about Carlo?”

Lorenzo’s expression changed.

Carlo was still alive.

Retired in Westchester.

Respected.

Untouchable.

A man Lorenzo had called uncle his entire life.

“Whatever you decide.”

Elara stared.

“What?”

Lorenzo removed the Beretta from beneath his jacket.

He placed it on the archive table.

“If you want Carlo brought here, I bring him.”

His voice remained steady.

“If you want the police, I give them evidence.”

“If you want blood…”

He pushed the gun toward her.

“…I will not stop you.”

Elara looked at the weapon.

Then at him.

“Why are you giving me this choice?”

“Because my family took the choice from your mother.”

His eyes held hers.

“I will not take yours.”

At sunrise, Carlo Moretti was brought to the estate.

He entered the library angry.

“What is this nonsense?”

At 71, Carlo still carried himself like a capo.

He stopped when he saw Elara.

Then Victor.

Recognition flickered.

Only for a second.

But Elara saw it.

“You remember her.”

Carlo’s face hardened.

“I remember many people.”

“My mother.”

Elara placed Miriam’s photograph on the table.

Carlo did not look down.

Lorenzo stood near the fireplace.

Silent.

Carlo turned toward him.

“You allow this girl to interrogate family?”

Lorenzo’s expression remained empty.

“Answer her.”

“I owe a maid nothing.”

The room changed.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

Elara raised her hand.

“No.”

She looked at Carlo.

“Let him speak.”

Carlo smiled.

“There.”

He pointed toward her.

“That is what has happened to you, Lorenzo.”

“A woman snaps her fingers and the Don waits.”

Elara remained calm.

“Did you kill Miriam Vance?”

Carlo’s smile disappeared.

“No.”

Elara opened the ledger.

“Your handwriting.”

She pushed it toward him.

Carlo glanced down.

His face changed.

Victor made a strangled sound.

Carlo looked toward Lorenzo.

“Your father knew what was necessary.”

“According to your own ledger, he didn’t.”

Lorenzo’s voice became deadly.

Carlo said nothing.

Elara stepped closer.

“Vale ordered it.”

Silence.

“Didn’t he?”

Carlo finally looked at her.

“You have her eyes.”

Victor lunged.

Stefano caught him before he reached Carlo.

“You murdered my wife!”

Carlo did not react.

“She was going to expose operations that would have started a war.”

“She was a mother!”

Victor shouted.

“She was my wife!”

“She was a liability.”

Elara’s grief disappeared beneath something colder.

“So was I.”

Carlo looked at her.

“You were a child.”

“You photographed me.”

She held up one of the surveillance images.

“You knew I existed.”

Carlo’s eyes shifted away.

That was the first sign of shame.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But Elara saw it.

She understood something.

Killing him would be easy.

Too easy.

Death would end his discomfort.

She wanted something else.

Elara picked up Lorenzo’s gun.

Carlo watched.

She checked the safety exactly as Mateo taught her.

Then she placed the weapon back on the table.

“No.”

Carlo’s eyebrows lifted.

“No?”

“I’m not killing you.”

Elara stepped closer.

“You are going to testify.”

Carlo laughed.

“To whom?”

“Federal prosecutors.”

The laughter stopped.

“You are going to give them Black Rook.”

“Names.”

“Accounts.”

“Operations.”

“Everything.”

Carlo looked toward Lorenzo.

“You would permit this?”

Lorenzo answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

“You would destroy your father’s legacy?”

“No.”

Lorenzo moved beside Elara.

“I would decide what mine will be.”

Carlo stared at him.

“You are weak.”

Lorenzo smiled faintly.

“No.”

He looked at Elara.

“I finally understand strength.”

Carlo was taken downstairs.

Victor remained behind.

He looked older.

But lighter.

Elara embraced him.

He began crying against her shoulder.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For not protecting your mother.”

“You loved her.”

“It wasn’t enough.”

“No.”

Elara closed her eyes.

“But it mattered.”

Later, she found Lorenzo alone on the west terrace.

Spring rain had stopped.

The stone where she had nearly frozen remained visible near the railing.

He stood there without a coat.

Elara approached.

“You like dramatic locations.”

“I own a dramatic house.”

She stopped beside him.

For a while, neither spoke.

Then Lorenzo said:

“I would understand if you left.”

Elara looked at him.

“My family killed your mother.”

“Carlo killed my mother.”

“Using power my family gave him.”

“You turned him over.”

“That does not erase anything.”

“No.”

Elara faced him.

“Nothing erases anything.”

She touched his hand.

“But that isn’t what love is.”

Lorenzo looked down at their fingers.

“What is it?”

“Choosing what happens next.”

He raised his eyes.

Elara stepped closer.

“I was angry that you kept the truth from me.”

“You should have been.”

“I still am.”

A faint smile touched his mouth.

“Good.”

“But when I asked you to open your family’s darkest room…”

She glanced toward the estate.

“…you gave me the key.”

Lorenzo’s expression softened.

Elara touched his cheek.

“That matters too.”

He kissed her palm.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

“That was an arrogant response.”

“I learned from you.”

He laughed quietly.

Then his phone rang.

The moment ended.

Stefano’s voice came through the speaker.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“Carlo never reached federal custody.”

Lorenzo went still.

“What happened?”

“Convoy was hit.”

Elara’s blood chilled.

“Carlo?”

“Dead.”

Stefano hesitated.

“And there is more.”

“What?”

“We found something on his body.”

Lorenzo’s eyes met Elara’s.

Stefano continued.

“A black rook.”

Elara closed her eyes.

Vale had just erased another witness.

But this time he had made a mistake.

He had revealed urgency.

And urgency meant fear.

Elara looked toward Lorenzo.

“He thinks Carlo told us something.”

“Did he?”

“No.”

She stared into the distance.

“But Vale doesn’t know that.”

Lorenzo slowly smiled.

He understood.

Elara smiled too.

“Then we make him believe Carlo told us everything.”

The queen had stopped defending.

Now she was ready to attack.
