Chapter 7 - The Man Inside Their HouseAt 3:12 a.m., Khloe discovered the betrayal.

It was not hidden inside a secret account.

It was hidden inside a mistake.

One transfer from Gallo Maritime had been approved nine minutes before Sebastian’s acquisition.

The authorization carried a valid internal signature.

Carter Hayes.

Khloe stared at the screen.

Dante stood behind her.

“No.”

She agreed.

“No.”

Carter had been with Dante for eleven years.

He had fought beside him during the Blake war.

He had accepted Khloe’s authority when others questioned it.

He had sat in this very office and watched her build the new organization.

Dante reached for his telephone.

Khloe stopped him.

“We verify first.”

“That is his authorization.”

“Which means either Carter betrayed us or someone wants us to believe he did.”

Dante’s eyes were cold.

“Either possibility requires a conversation.”

“Not yet.”

She enlarged the transaction metadata.

Something was wrong.

Carter’s digital certificate was authentic.

His password was authentic.

His biometric confirmation was authentic.

But the transaction originated from a workstation on the thirty-ninth floor.

Carter worked on forty-one.

“Security footage.”

Dante accessed the internal system.

The camera outside the workstation showed an empty corridor.

At 11:04 p.m., Carter entered.

Khloe’s stomach tightened.

He remained inside for seven minutes.

Then left.

Dante said nothing.

Khloe watched the footage again.

“Stop.”

He paused it.

“His right hand.”

Carter carried a coffee cup.

“What about it?”

“He is left-handed.”

Dante looked at her.

Khloe replayed the recording.

The man resembled Carter perfectly.

Height.

Hair.

Suit.

Movement.

But he carried the cup with his right hand.

“Facial prosthetics?” Dante asked.

“Maybe.”

“Then Carter is being framed.”

“Or he deliberately changed hands because he knew I would notice.”

Dante stared at her.

“You trust no one.”

“I learned from you.”

His expression did not soften.

Khloe checked Carter’s location.

His telephone showed him at home.

“Do not call him.”

Dante was already reaching for his coat.

“Khloe.”

“If Sebastian has someone inside our organization, reacting now tells him what we know.”

“He already knows enough.”

“Not everything.”

Dante looked at the clock.

3:24.

“What do you suggest?”

Khloe closed the laptop.

“We behave normally.”

He laughed once without humor.

“I am not particularly talented at that.”

“You will learn.”

At 8:00 a.m., Carter entered the executive conference room carrying coffee in his left hand.

Khloe noticed.

So did Dante.

Neither reacted.

“Morning.”

Carter sat.

“You both look terrible.”

“Thank you,” Khloe said.

“I meant tired.”

“That improved it tremendously.”

Miles entered behind him.

The meeting began.

For forty minutes, Khloe discussed shipping forecasts, insurance exposure, and Sebastian’s hostile acquisition.

Carter contributed normally.

Too normally.

At 8:47, Khloe placed a document in front of him.

“I need your signature.”

He reached for a pen.

Left hand.

She watched the motion.

“Something wrong?”

“No.”

Carter signed.

Khloe smiled.

“Thank you.”

At 9:02, he left.

Dante closed the door.

“That was Carter.”

“Yes.”

“So who entered the office?”

Khloe looked at Miles.

“Find out.”

Miles nodded.

Before he could leave, the conference telephone rang.

Dante answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Good morning.”

Sebastian.

Khloe activated recording.

“You have twenty-eight minutes before market open,” Sebastian said.

“Enjoying your last breakfast?”

Khloe leaned toward the speaker.

“I have had better.”

“I imagine.”

“You made a mistake.”

“Already?”

“You are slipping.”

Sebastian laughed.

“Tell me.”

“No.”

Khloe smiled.

“I want you wondering.”

Silence.

Small.

But significant.

Sebastian disliked uncertainty.

Good.

“I will speak to Dante.”

“He can hear you.”

“This is between him and me.”

“No.”

Khloe’s voice became cold.

“Everything involving Dante is between us.”

Dante looked at her.

Something fierce and intimate passed across his expression.

Sebastian sighed.

“That devotion will eventually become exhausting.”

“You would need someone to love you before you could understand.”

Miles looked away to hide a grin.

Sebastian’s voice hardened.

“Market opens in twenty-six minutes.”

The line disconnected.

Khloe checked the time.

“Begin.”

For the next twenty minutes, the Gallo organization moved without violence.

Lawyers filed emergency injunctions.

Banks received evidence that Sebastian’s debt instruments had been acquired through fraudulent shell corporations.

Pension trustees froze voting rights attached to disputed shares.

A Swiss regulatory complaint appeared.

Then another in Luxembourg.

At 9:29, Sebastian owned seventeen percent.

At 9:30, trading opened.

At 9:31, Khloe purchased eight percent through employee trusts.

At 9:32, three institutional investors announced support for Gallo management.

At 9:34, Sebastian attempted to exercise his debt rights.

At 9:35, a federal judge temporarily suspended them.

Khloe leaned back.

Dante watched the screen.

“You destroyed his attack in five minutes.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I delayed it.”

A notification appeared.

Someone had sold a massive position.

Gallo Maritime shares collapsed twelve percent.

Then twenty.

“Who is selling?”

Khloe asked.

Carter typed.

His face went pale.

“The employee pension fund.”

Khloe stood.

“That requires three trustee signatures.”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

Carter looked up.

“Donovan.”

Silence.

Dante stared.

“Donovan is in the hospital.”

“And two others.”

Carter named them.

Both senior Gallo associates.

Miles cursed.

The pension fund sale accelerated.

Khloe understood.

Sebastian had not infiltrated one person.

He had infiltrated the structure.

“Freeze trading.”

“We cannot.”

“Then buy.”

Dante looked at her.

“How much?”

“Everything.”

“Khloe—”

“Everything they sell.”

Dante did not hesitate.

“Do it.”

Hundreds of millions moved.

Their cash reserves fell.

Sebastian’s attack forced them to purchase their own company at enormous cost.

At 10:17, the selling stopped.

Khloe stared at the balance sheet.

They had survived.

Barely.

Then Miles’s telephone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“Boss.”

Dante looked over.

Miles lowered the telephone.

“Carter’s house exploded.”

No one moved.

Carter stared at him.

“My what?”

“Your house.”

“My wife.”

His chair crashed backward.

“My daughter is there.”

Miles grabbed him before he reached the door.

“Let go of me!”

“We do not know what happened.”

“My family is there!”

Carter struck Miles.

Dante stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Carter’s face collapsed.

“My daughter is seven.”

Khloe felt sick.

Miles received another call.

He answered.

Everyone watched.

Finally, he exhaled.

“They are alive.”

Carter nearly fell.

“They left fifteen minutes before the explosion. School run.”

He covered his face.

Khloe looked toward Dante.

The message was obvious.

Sebastian could reach everyone.

Then Carter’s telephone vibrated.

A text.

He read it.

His expression emptied.

“What?”

Khloe asked.

He handed her the telephone.

One sentence.

NEXT TIME I WILL CHECK THE SCHOOL SCHEDULE.

Khloe’s blood turned cold.

Dante took the device.

Something inside him broke.

“We end this today.”

Khloe did not stop him.

Not this time.

“Agreed.”

Carter looked at them.

“What do you need?”

Khloe studied him.

“Your trust.”

“You have it.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“I need more than that.”

She explained the false footage.

Carter stared.

“You thought I betrayed you.”

“We considered it.”

Pain crossed his face.

Dante said, “We consider everyone.”

Carter looked away.

Khloe continued.

“Sebastian wants us suspicious of one another.”

“So?”

“So we give him what he wants.”

Carter frowned.

Three hours later, the Gallo organization appeared to fracture.

A rumor spread that Dante had accused Carter of betrayal.

Another claimed Miles had demanded Carter’s execution.

By afternoon, Carter publicly left headquarters.

He shouted at Dante in the lobby.

Security cameras captured everything.

By evening, three criminal intermediaries reported that Carter wanted protection.

At 9:00 p.m., Sebastian contacted him.

Exactly as Khloe expected.

The meeting took place inside an abandoned restaurant.

Carter wore a wire.

Khloe and Dante listened from a van two blocks away.

Sebastian’s voice came through clearly.

“You understand Gallo will never trust you again.”

Carter sounded bitter.

“He never trusted anyone.”

“Khloe?”

A pause.

“She is worse.”

Khloe smiled slightly.

Dante looked at her.

“You are enjoying this.”

“A little.”

Sebastian continued.

“I can protect your family.”

Carter replied, “You nearly killed them.”

“A demonstration.”

“My daughter was inside that house ten minutes earlier.”

“Which is why you understand the stakes.”

Silence.

Then Sebastian said something that changed everything.

“Give me access to the vault tomorrow night, and your family disappears safely.”

Dante leaned forward.

The vault.

Not money.

Their records.

The physical archive contained evidence linking judges, politicians, unions, police commanders, corporations, and criminal organizations.

If Sebastian obtained it, he would control half the city.

Carter asked, “What exactly do you want?”

“One ledger.”

“Which?”

“The Bishop ledger.”

Khloe froze.

Dante looked at her.

She had never heard the term.

Neither had he.

Carter improvised.

“I need more.”

Sebastian laughed.

“Ask Khloe.”

The communication line went dead.

Khloe stared ahead.

Dante spoke first.

“What is the Bishop ledger?”

“I do not know.”

But a memory had already surfaced.

Her grandmother’s quilt.

Destroyed in the apartment fire.

Or supposedly destroyed.

Khloe remembered something.

When firefighters catalogued the remains, one object had been recovered from a fireproof storage box.

An old accounting book.

Khloe had never opened it.

She had been too consumed by war.

It was now inside Gallo storage.

May you like

She turned toward Dante.

“I think I know where it is.”
