Chapter 3 - When she reached the living area, Khloe stopped.

The room had become a command center.

Five men surrounded the black granite island.

They were hard-eyed and broad, wearing wrinkled suits carrying the smells of tobacco and stale coffee.

They were Dante’s lieutenants—the men who imposed his authority throughout the city.

Khloe knew their names, payment schedules, and legal identities.

Dante stood at the head of the island wearing dark jeans and a black Henley shirt. The sleeves exposed the tattoos across his forearms.

He looked like the ruler of a dangerous world.

“The Blakes will not meet with anyone.”

Donovan, whose throat was crossed by a jagged scar, pointed toward a map of the city.

“They removed their runners from the South Side and are arming.”

“Let them.”

Dante’s voice remained flat.

“Double the guards at the docks.”

He ordered that anyone entering Gallo territory have both legs broken without warning.

“With respect, boss.”

Carter, a thin lieutenant, spoke carefully.

“This is a major escalation over a civilian.”

He mentioned that the Commission would ask questions.

The penthouse became colder.

Dante did not raise his voice or move.

“If any member of the Commission has a question, he may bring it to me personally.”

Each word fell like ice.

“You will never refer to her as a civilian again.”

His eyes remained on Carter.

“Is that clear?”

Carter lowered his gaze.

“Completely clear, boss.”

Khloe stepped forward.

Her bare foot made a small sound against the floor.

All 6 men looked toward her.

The 5 lieutenants regarded her with surprise, discomfort, and a new form of respect.

Previously, they had treated her politely because she signed their checks.

Now she was the reason Dante was prepared to begin a war.

Dante’s expression changed immediately.

The lethal edge disappeared.

He crossed the room and stopped before Khloe, positioning his body subtly between her and his men.

“You are awake.”

“I am.”

She looked beyond him toward the maps, disposable telephones, and 2 Glock pistols resting beside a bag of coffee beans.

The reality she had reduced to spreadsheets was now exposed on Dante’s kitchen counter.

“I apologize.”

Dante misunderstood her stare and attempted to block the weapons.

“I will remove them.”

“No.”

The answer escaped before she reconsidered.

Dante blinked.

Khloe straightened her back and stepped around him.

She refused to hide in a guest bedroom while people died because of her.

The lieutenants moved aside automatically.

Khloe examined the unopened bag of beans and the high-end espresso machine.

“You possess a $2,000 coffee machine, and no one has prepared anything?”

Donovan touched the back of his neck.

“We do not know how to operate it, Miss Khloe.”

He regarded the controls suspiciously.

“There are too many buttons.”

“It contains a burr grinder, Donovan. It is not a launch system.”

Khloe opened the beans and poured them into the machine.

The men watched her.

She stood barefoot in clothing 3 sizes too large, surrounded by guns, and organized them with the same calm authority she used on an ordinary Tuesday.

The machine’s mechanical sound broke the tension.

Khloe returned her attention to the map.

“You are moving guards toward the docks.”

She indicated the red markings Donovan had made.

“If the Blakes withdrew their runners from the South Side, they will not attack the port.”

Khloe looked at the men.

“They do not fight directly. They target vulnerable assets to force you into the open.”

She tapped another section of the map.

“They will attack the distribution company on Fifth Street.”

Carter studied it.

“She is correct.”

He traced the route.

“They hit the warehouse and restrict cash flow without confronting the main security teams.”

Dante leaned against the counter.

He did not look at the map.

He watched Khloe, and the pride inside his expression was unguarded.

“Move the perimeter to the Fifth Street warehouse.”

His attention remained on her.

“Allow them to enter a trap.”

Khloe poured the first espresso.

Her hands were steady.

The terrified woman inside the nightclub restroom had disappeared.

She was adapting and surviving.

When she handed the cup to Dante and their fingers touched, Khloe understood that she was exactly where she needed to be.

The command center operated on coffee and cold pizza until the middle of the afternoon.

Khloe sat on a stool at the island with a laptop taken from Dante’s office across her knees.

She redirected funds, suspended scheduled deliveries, and created legal barriers around exposed assets faster than the Blakes could identify them.

Khloe was tracing offshore accounts when Donovan’s disposable telephone vibrated against the granite.

Conversation stopped.

Donovan answered and listened without speaking.

The scarred skin surrounding his jaw tightened.

He lowered the telephone and looked toward Dante.

Then his eyes moved briefly toward Khloe.

It was a small expression of pity.

She saw it.

Cold dread entered her stomach.

“What happened?” Dante asked.

“A police officer on our payroll inside the 8th Precinct called.”

Donovan opened a multimedia message and moved the telephone across the island toward Dante.

Dante looked at the screen.

His jaw tightened, and the muscles in his neck became rigid.

He placed the device facedown.

“Leave the room.”

“Boss, we need to respond.”

“I said leave.”

The growl belonged to an animal.

The lieutenants collected their weapons and coats and exited without further discussion.

The door closed, leaving the penthouse empty and oppressively quiet.

Khloe placed the laptop on the counter.

Her hands began shaking again.

“What is it?”

Dante did not give her the telephone.

He approached, took both of her hands, and helped her down from the stool.

“They could not reach me.”

His voice was quiet.

“They failed to penetrate the security at the warehouse, so they selected the easiest remaining target.”

“My apartment.”

“They forced the door approximately 20 minutes ago.”

Dante maintained his grip, holding her in place.

“They searched for you.”

Hatred crossed his face.

“When they realized you were gone, they set the building on fire.”

He paused.

“The fire department is working there now, but the apartment is destroyed.”

Khloe stopped breathing.

The small rent-controlled apartment had been her private refuge for 4 years.

Her books were there, along with her grandmother’s quilt and photographs of her family.

Every part of her life outside Dante’s organization had existed in those rooms.

Now it was ash.

Had she returned home after the club, she would have been asleep when the door was broken.

She would have burned with it.

Khloe’s knees failed.

Dante caught her and absorbed her full weight.

She buried her face against his shoulder and gripped his shirt.

No tears came.

The shock was too deep.

It felt as though her past had been cut away.

“I will purchase the building.”

Dante spoke against her hair.

“I will buy the entire block.”

His arms tightened around her.

“I will replace every object they destroyed 1,000 times over.”

“I do not care about the objects.”

Khloe’s words were muffled against him.

She struggled to continue.

“I have nothing else now.”

Her voice broke.

“This is all that remains. There is no way back.”

Dante drew away enough to place both hands around her face.

His thumbs moved across her cheeks.

His dark eyes contained no armor.

“You have me.”

It was more than comfort.

It was an irrevocable vow binding them together.

“You will always have me.”

Khloe saw the blood across his knuckles and smelled coffee, rain, and gunpowder.

She felt the strength of the man who had destabilized his own world simply to keep her alive.

She was no longer a civilian.

The fire had destroyed the boundary between the secretary and the syndicate.

Khloe stood amid the remains of her previous life with the devil as the only person beside her.

“Okay.”

Fear withdrew.

A clear and cold determination replaced it.

Khloe placed both hands against Dante’s chest, directly above his heartbeat.

“Okay.”

Dante searched her face for hesitation or regret.

He found neither.

He lowered his head slowly and allowed her every opportunity to turn away.

Khloe raised her chin and met him.

The kiss was not gentle.

It was desperate, bruising, and heavy with survival.

It tasted of adrenaline and inevitability.

A rough sound moved through Dante’s chest.

He placed both arms around Khloe’s waist and lifted her from the floor, crushing her against him as though attempting to form a single invulnerable body.

Khloe returned the kiss with equal force and closed her fingers inside his dark hair.

She gave him every fear, loss, and unspoken devotion she had carried for 3 years.

When they separated, both were breathing heavily.

The silence of the penthouse had changed.

It no longer resembled a waiting room.

It belonged to them.

Dante lowered Khloe slowly and rested his forehead against hers.

“What do we do now?”

The word we remained between them, permanent and absolute.

Dante stepped away and approached the island.

He took 1 of the Glock pistols and checked its magazine.

The mechanism clicked with finality.

When he looked at Khloe again, the lethal ruler had returned.

“Now we burn them back.”

The war did not resemble a film.

It did not occur in slow motion or arrive with music.

It consisted of sleepless nights, unfinished takeout food, and the constant vibration of disposable telephones.

For 4 days, the penthouse functioned as the center of a sustained bloodletting.

Khloe barely slept.

The oversized T-shirt and sweatpants were replaced by black tailored trousers and a silk blouse delivered by courier at Dante’s direction.

The clothing became armor.

She sat at the dining table surrounded by 3 monitors and dismantled the Blake syndicate’s finances with surgical precision.

Khloe did not fire weapons.

She did something more destructive.

She deprived them of money.

She followed Blake shell companies through multiple layers of fabricated limited-liability corporations.

Khloe found the maritime routing numbers associated with their contraband imports.

Using a forged authorization code, she redirected 3 consecutive Blake shipments into the custody of federal customs officers.

She froze bank accounts.

Through falsified corporate audits, she canceled leases attached to Blake safe houses.

Carter watched from near the window.

By the second day, he no longer regarded Khloe with skepticism.

Now there was fear.

“They failed to issue payroll.”

Khloe did not look away from the screen as she spoke.

Her fingers moved across the keyboard.

Dante entered carrying the smells of rain, vehicle exhaust, and blood.

His jacket was gone.

A narrow white bandage surrounded his left biceps, the result of a confrontation at the docks 12 hours earlier.

“Who failed?”

Dante poured Scotch into a heavy glass.

“The Blake organization. Their middle-ranking soldiers.”

Khloe pressed Enter.

“I obstructed the Cayman accounts.”

She explained that the money had been placed into escrow pending a fictitious money-laundering investigation.

“The street crews have not received payment since Tuesday.”

Dante stopped with the glass near his mouth and looked toward Carter.

Carter smiled slowly.

“Men who are not paid do not fight.”

“They do more than leave.”

Dante approached Khloe’s chair and rested his uninjured hand against its back.

“They panic.”

His presence settled around her like weight and protection.

“Old man Blake sent a message through an intermediary approximately 1 hour ago.”

Dante’s exhaustion roughened his voice.

“He wants a meeting.”

Khloe stopped typing and turned.

“It is a trap.”

“Of course it is.”

“Then you are not attending.”

The lieutenants exchanged looks.

No one ordered Dante Gallo to do anything—not his capos, the Commission, or a woman who had been arranging his appointments days earlier.

Dante did not become angry.

A tired smile touched his mouth.

“I must attend.”

He explained that refusing a formal parley would make him appear weak before the Commission.

“Walking into an execution does not make you appear strong.”

Khloe took a tablet and opened a city map.

“It makes you dead.”

She looked toward Dante.

“Where is the meeting?”

“The abandoned tram station on 14th Street.”

Khloe studied the streets and opened public property records.

Dante explained that the station contained 3 exits that could be secured. Donovan would bring 12 men, sweep the perimeter, and contain Blake’s remaining loyalists.

“No.”

Khloe enlarged an adjacent gray parcel.

“Look at the property beside the station.”

“It is listed as municipal storage,” Carter said.

“It has been vacant for 10 years.”

“It was.”

Khloe examined the tax history.

“The property tax was paid 3 months ago by Apex Logistics.”

The name changed the atmosphere.

Apex was a subsidiary of the company managed by Derek Walsh.

The room became silent.

Dante leaned over the display.

The trap was immediately clear.

“That property is not empty.”

Khloe’s voice remained steady, although her hand tightened around the tablet.

“They will not attack from within the station.”

She traced the surrounding structures.

“They will use the Apex property to penetrate the walls or block the exits.”

Khloe looked at Dante.

“You will be trapped inside.”

Dante straightened.

The exhaustion disappeared and was replaced by complete focus.

“Contact Donovan.”

He addressed Carter.

“Cancel the sweep at the tram station.”

Dante chambered a round inside his pistol.

“We will not attend the meeting.”

Carter raised the telephone.

“What is the alternative?”

“We go to the municipal property.”

Dante’s voice returned to ice.

“We destroy the trap while they are waiting to activate it.”

Later, an open communication channel filled the penthouse with static.

Khloe sat alone at the dining table wearing an earpiece.

Only the server fans and the line’s electronic hiss disturbed the silence.

The city outside was starless and black.

“Perimeter established.”

Donovan’s whisper reached her.

“The Apex property is active. I count 20 thermal signatures inside the main warehouse.”

Khloe watched illuminated indicators on a monitor.

She had penetrated the municipal network and restored dormant surveillance cameras attached to streetlights throughout the 14th Street area.

Dante’s SUVs waited in nearby alleys like shadows.

Khloe activated the microphone.

“Dante, the structural plans indicate a weakness in the load-bearing section of the southern wall.”

She examined the building.

“If they reinforced the doors, avoid them. Enter through the brick.”

“Understood.”

Dante’s voice was calm.

May you like

“Remain on the channel.”

Three minutes passed.
