Chapter 6 - The Dead Man at MidnightAt 11:58 p.m., Khloe walked alone through the museum’s eastern entrance.

At least, that was what Sebastian Blake was supposed to believe.
Her black evening dress reached the floor and concealed the compact communication device strapped against her thigh.
A diamond necklace rested at her throat.
Dante had given it to her two months earlier.
Tonight, one of the stones contained a microphone.
Miles occupied the surveillance room.
Carter controlled the exterior doors.
Twelve Gallo men were distributed throughout nearby buildings.
Dante was somewhere Khloe had specifically ordered him not to be.
She knew he had ignored her.
She simply did not know where.
The museum after midnight felt like a cathedral abandoned by God.
Marble floors reflected dim security lighting.
Ancient faces watched her from paintings.
Every footstep returned as an echo.
Khloe entered the European gallery.
A man stood beneath a seventeenth-century portrait.
Gray suit.
Silver at his temples.
Hands clasped behind his back.
Sebastian Blake.
He looked remarkably similar to the photograph from eight years earlier.
Time had sharpened rather than softened him.
“Miss Bishop.”
His voice was cultured.
“You came.”
“You threatened my family.”
“I mentioned your grandmother.”
“You knew I would interpret it correctly.”
Sebastian smiled.
“I understand why Dante values you.”
Khloe stopped twenty feet away.
“Do you?”
“More than he does.”
That almost made her laugh.
“You bought seventeen percent of our company to demonstrate psychological insight?”
“To demonstrate access.”
Sebastian walked slowly through the gallery.
Khloe followed at a distance.
“My father underestimated you.”
“Your father never met me.”
“He knew about you.”
That stopped her.
Sebastian looked back.
“Long before Derek Walsh entered that nightclub.”
Khloe’s pulse changed.
“Explain.”
“My father maintained files on everyone connected to Dante Gallo.”
Sebastian gestured toward a bench.
Khloe remained standing.
“He knew where you lived. Where your sister lived. Where you went to university.”
His expression became almost sympathetic.
“He knew about Eleanor Bishop.”
Khloe’s grandmother.
“What does she have to do with your father?”
“Everything.”
Sebastian removed an old photograph from his jacket.
He placed it on the bench between them.
Khloe approached cautiously.
The image showed her grandmother at approximately forty years old.
Beside her stood a younger man.
Khloe recognized him immediately.
Vincent Gallo.
Dante’s father.
Her mouth became dry.
“That is impossible.”
“No.”
Sebastian watched her carefully.
“It is merely inconvenient.”
Khloe picked up the photograph.
Her grandmother and Vincent were standing outside a restaurant.
They appeared comfortable together.
Familiar.
“What was their relationship?”
“Business.”
Sebastian smiled.
“Mostly.”
Khloe ignored the implication.
“My grandmother was a school secretary.”
“Your grandmother was one of the best financial intermediaries this city ever produced.”
Khloe looked up.
“You are lying.”
“Am I?”
Sebastian removed a second document.
Bank transfers.
Dates from more than twenty years earlier.
Eleanor Bishop’s name appeared beside corporations Khloe recognized as predecessors to the Gallo organization.
“She created the financial architecture your boyfriend inherited.”
Sebastian stepped closer.
“Your talent is not accidental.”
Khloe’s fingers tightened around the document.
“My grandmother hated organized crime.”
“She hated what organized crime did to people.”
Sebastian nodded.
“That is different.”
“What happened to her?”
Sebastian’s smile vanished.
“My father discovered she was helping Vincent Gallo move assets beyond Blake control.”
Khloe felt cold.
“There was a partnership?”
“There was an alliance.”
Sebastian looked toward the paintings.
“Before Dante and I inherited hatred, our fathers occasionally made money together.”
“What changed?”
“Greed.”
He shrugged.
“What else?”
Khloe wanted to reject everything.
But numbers were difficult to fabricate convincingly.
The routing codes were real.
The corporate names existed.
She recognized structures identical to methods she herself used.
Her grandmother had taught her bookkeeping when she was thirteen.
Always follow the money, sweetheart.
People lie.
Numbers only lie when someone teaches them how.
Khloe had believed it was ordinary advice.
Now the words sounded different.
“My grandmother died from a heart attack.”
Sebastian looked at her.
“No.”
The single word struck harder than expected.
Khloe’s breathing stopped.
“My father had her killed.”
Silence.
Khloe did not move.
“What?”
“He considered her a liability.”
Sebastian’s voice remained calm.
“He arranged medication that created cardiac symptoms. There was no investigation.”
Khloe felt the room tilt.
Miles spoke softly through her earpiece.
“Khloe, stay with us.”
She could not answer.
Sebastian studied her grief with disturbing interest.
“You understand now.”
“Understand what?”
“Why I came back.”
His expression hardened.
“Our fathers destroyed everyone around them.”
“You came back to avenge my grandmother?”
“No.”
Sebastian laughed quietly.
“I came back because Dante possesses something my father spent his entire life trying to build.”
“The city.”
“No.”
Sebastian looked directly at her.
“You.”
Khloe’s stomach tightened.
“Do not flatter yourself into thinking that interests me.”
“It should.”
He moved closer.
“Dante Gallo has become almost legitimate because of you. Revenue doubled. Political exposure decreased. Federal risk collapsed.”
He gestured toward her.
“You transformed a violent organization into something sustainable.”
Khloe finally understood.
“You do not want revenge.”
“I want a partnership.”
“With me.”
“Yes.”
“And Dante?”
Sebastian’s expression contained no emotion.
“Retired.”
Khloe smiled coldly.
“You mean dead.”
“I mean absent.”
“Same thing in your vocabulary.”
Sebastian did not deny it.
Khloe placed the photograph into her handbag.
“You wasted your time.”
“I expected that answer tonight.”
“Then why arrange this?”
“Because tomorrow will be different.”
Sebastian checked his watch.
12:17.
“Your seventeen percent will become thirty-four by market open.”
Khloe frowned.
“That is impossible.”
“Not if the remaining shares are collateral.”
A terrible realization entered her mind.
Gallo Maritime had credit agreements.
Khloe had reviewed them.
Every one.
Except—
“The old Blake debt.”
Sebastian smiled.
“There she is.”
When Dante absorbed Blake assets, he had also absorbed several dormant obligations.
One was held by an anonymous European trust.
Khloe had attempted to buy it.
The owner refused.
She had eventually classified it as low risk because enforcement required conditions she believed impossible.
Unless someone controlled the original guarantee.
Sebastian.
“You planned this before your father died.”
“I planned this before you knew my name.”
Khloe’s earpiece clicked.
Carter’s voice.
“He is right. We are seeing transfer notices.”
Khloe remained expressionless.
“How much?”
“Enough.”
Sebastian approached.
“By nine tomorrow morning, I can force Dante into insolvency.”
“You think money frightens him?”
“No.”
Sebastian’s gaze lowered briefly toward her necklace.
“I think losing you frightens him.”
Khloe heard movement.
Not through the earpiece.
Behind her.
She turned.
Dante stepped from the darkness between two galleries.
Black suit.
No tie.
No visible weapon.
His face was terrifyingly calm.
“I told you not to come.”
Khloe closed her eyes briefly.
Sebastian smiled.
“And there he is.”
Dante ignored him.
He looked only at Khloe.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Did he touch you?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Dante turned toward Sebastian.
“Then you have approximately thirty seconds to explain why I should allow you to leave.”
Sebastian laughed.
“Because killing me triggers every debt.”
Dante’s expression did not change.
“Money can be replaced.”
“Yes.”
Sebastian’s eyes moved toward Khloe.
“But can she?”
Dante crossed half the distance before Khloe stepped between them.
“Stop.”
He looked at her.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Khloe.”
“His death is exactly what he wants.”
Sebastian’s smile confirmed it.
Dante saw.
Khloe continued.
“If you kill him, the financial attack executes automatically.”
“So?”
“So thousands of legitimate employees lose pensions, wages, insurance, and jobs.”
Dante’s jaw flexed.
“This is not only our money anymore.”
That mattered.
Six months earlier, Dante might have burned everything.
Now thousands of ordinary people depended on companies Khloe had built.
Power created responsibilities she had never expected.
Sebastian extended his arms.
“She understands.”
Khloe turned toward him.
“Do not mistake restraint for surrender.”
“I would never.”
“You should.”
She stepped closer.
“You made one error.”
Sebastian raised an eyebrow.
“Only one?”
“You showed me the mechanism.”
For the first time, uncertainty touched his face.
Khloe continued.
“You wanted me to understand how intelligent you are.”
She smiled.
“That is vanity.”
Sebastian’s eyes narrowed.
“And vanity leaves records.”
The museum lights suddenly brightened.
Miles appeared at one entrance.
Carter at another.
Sebastian did not move.
Khloe held his gaze.
“You have until market open.”
“For what?”
“To enjoy owning seventeen percent of my company.”
She took Dante’s hand.
“Because at 9:30, I am taking everything you have.”
They walked away together.
Only when the museum doors closed behind them did Dante stop.
He turned Khloe toward him.
“What did he say about your grandmother?”
Her strength disappeared.
Dante saw it happen.
The queen vanished for one painful second.
The granddaughter remained.
“He killed her.”
Dante’s face changed.
“Sebastian?”
“His father.”
She looked down at the photograph.
“My grandmother worked with your father.”
Dante stared.
“What?”
“She built some of his financial systems.”
The past suddenly connected them in a way neither had anticipated.
Dante touched the photograph.
“My father never mentioned her.”
“Maybe he was protecting her.”
“Not well enough.”
Khloe’s eyes filled.
“I spent twelve years believing she died alone because I was too busy at college to come home that weekend.”
Dante placed both hands around her face.
“No.”
“I should have been there.”
“No.”
His voice became firm.
“You do not inherit guilt for someone else’s murder.”
A tear escaped.
Dante wiped it away.
Khloe whispered, “I want Sebastian destroyed.”
Dante’s eyes darkened.
“Say the word.”
She shook her head.
“Not with bullets.”
Her grief transformed.
Dante recognized the change.
He had seen it when her apartment burned.
Khloe Bishop did not remain broken for long.
She converted pain into structure.
Into strategy.
Into war.
“I want him alive when he realizes he lost.”
Dante stared at the woman he loved.
Then he kissed her forehead.
“Tell me what you need.”
Khloe looked toward the city.
“Coffee.”
Dante almost laughed.
“And?”
“Every accountant we employ.”
She wiped her face.
“Every lawyer.”
Her voice strengthened.
“And access to the Federal Reserve clearing system.”
Dante raised an eyebrow.
“That sounds illegal.”
May you like
Khloe finally smiled.
“You are adorable when you pretend to care.”
