Chapter 4 - The silence stretched Khloe’s nerves until they seemed ready to break.

She imagined Dante entering the warehouse and weapons firing from the darkness.

Then the world erupted.

An explosion overwhelmed the audio feed.

Automatic gunfire followed immediately.

The indicators on Khloe’s monitor scattered.

“Southern wall breached,” Carter shouted through the communication line.

“Advance. Keep them against the loading dock.”

Khloe could not see the bodies.

She heard screams, gunfire, breaking concrete, running boots, and heavy impacts.

She forced herself to breathe and continue monitoring the street cameras.

“Donovan.”

Movement appeared on the western feed.

“Two vehicles are approaching from the west.”

Khloe identified them as Blake reinforcements.

“They are attempting to flank you through the alley.”

“I see them.”

The radio became a confusion of orders and impacts as the Costello men redirected their fire.

Khloe held the edge of the table.

She was no longer an innocent observer.

She was directing movement inside a slaughterhouse.

No guilt came.

Only a primitive and absolute need for Dante to survive.

The gunfire gradually decreased.

Automatic bursts became isolated shots.

Then there was silence.

Static returned through the earpiece.

“Dante?”

Her voice cracked despite her control.

There was no answer.

“Report.”

Thirty seconds of silence weighed more heavily than the gunfire.

Khloe stood so quickly that the chair scraped backward.

Then the communication device clicked.

“It is finished.”

Dante was breathing heavily, but the voice was unmistakably his.

Khloe closed her eyes and released a broken breath.

“Old man Blake is dead.”

Dante’s words were brief.

“The remaining loyalists surrendered their weapons. The syndicate is broken.”

“Are you injured?”

“No.”

A pause followed.

“We are coming home.”

Khloe removed the earpiece and placed it on the keyboard.

The war that began in a filthy bathroom had ended inside a concrete tomb.

The Blakes no longer existed.

Khloe approached the windows.

City lights continued flickering below, indifferent to the bloodshed.

She folded both arms around herself and shivered despite the penthouse’s heat.

One hour later, the elevator opened.

Dante entered alone.

He appeared to have crossed through hell.

Pale brick dust and drying blood covered his dark clothing. His knuckles were raw.

The adrenaline had left him, and each movement was slow.

Dante ignored the bar and his telephone.

He walked directly toward Khloe.

She turned from the glass.

The blood did not make her retreat.

They met in the center of the room.

Dante stopped 1 foot away.

He looked at his hands and then at Khloe.

The ruler and the monster were gone.

Only an exhausted man remained, searching for the single source of light left inside his world.

“It is finished.”

“I know.”

Khloe raised a hand and touched his jaw with her bare fingers, following the remaining edge of the bruise Derek had caused.

Dante closed his eyes and leaned into her palm.

A shudder moved through his body.

“I brought violence to your door.”

His voice broke.

“I destroyed your life.”

“My life was a waiting room.”

Khloe’s answer was fierce.

“I organized everyone else’s disorder because I was afraid to live inside my own.”

She held his face.

“You did not destroy it.”

Her voice softened.

“You woke me.”

Dante opened his eyes.

The devotion inside them was exposed and blinding.

He placed both arms around Khloe and pulled her against his ruined clothing.

His face settled into the curve of her neck, and he breathed her in as though she were oxygen.

“Stay.”

The word touched her skin.

“Not as my secretary and not as a civilian.”

His arms tightened.

“Stay with me.”

“I am already here.”

Khloe placed her arms around his waist and anchored him.

“I am not leaving.”

Six months later, the city had forgotten the Blake name.

Nature rejected a vacuum, and the underworld behaved no differently.

Blake territory, political influence, routes, and business interests were absorbed, restructured, and optimized.

The meatpacking facility and its ammonia-scented basement were no longer used.

Dante Gallo now operated from a high-rise office in the Financial District.

Its windows remained bullet-resistant, but the view belonged to a legitimate corporate headquarters.

The front companies were legally secure.

The money was clean—or sufficiently clean to survive a federal audit.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, Dante sat behind a polished mahogany desk wearing a navy suit tailored precisely to his broad shoulders.

There was no blood on his hands.

He was reviewing a commercial real-estate acquisition agreement when the oak doors opened.

Khloe entered.

She carried neither a binder nor coffee.

Her crimson suit commanded the office immediately, and her dark hair fell in waves over her shoulders.

Carter followed 1 step behind with a leather folio.

“The Port Authority approved the permits for the new shipping containers.”

Khloe placed a flash drive on Dante’s desk.

“The union representatives also accepted the revised pension structure.”

She continued.

“Donovan will meet them at noon to execute the documents.”

Dante placed his pen aside and leaned back, joining his fingers over his stomach.

A satisfied smile appeared.

“They did not resist the pension provisions?”

Carter laughed.

“Resist?”

He looked toward Khloe.

“She entered the meeting, displayed their $2 million embezzlement account on the projector, and told them they could sign the agreement or explain the missing funds to the Internal Revenue Service.”

Carter shook his head.

“They nearly broke their wrists attempting to sign quickly enough.”

Dante’s smile widened.

His attention remained entirely on Khloe.

“You are dismissed, Carter.”

“Yes, sir.”

Carter nodded respectfully toward Dante and then faced Khloe.

“I will see you at the briefing, boss.”

He exited.

The doors closed.

The silence inside the office was comfortable—the silence of 2 people who understood the structure of their lives without explanation.

Khloe walked around the desk.

Dante caught her by the waist and drew her effortlessly onto his lap.

She placed both hands against his chest and felt his steady heartbeat beneath the expensive wool.

“You are terrifying.”

Dante kissed the pulse point beneath her jaw.

“I learned from the best.”

Khloe touched the lapel of his jacket and looked beyond him toward the city.

It remained violent and unforgiving, built on secrets and power.

Three years earlier, she had been a ghost inside its machinery, filing documents and pretending the blood did not exist.

Now she held the reins.

Khloe had taken Dante’s chaos and constructed an empire from it.

His fingers entered her hair and turned her face back toward him.

The expression in Dante’s eyes was the same possessive and absolute devotion she had seen inside the nightclub bathroom.

There was no fear left between them.

“Are we secure for the week?”

“Airtight.”

“Good.”

Dante kissed her slowly.

“I am taking you home, and you will not look at a spreadsheet for the next 3 days.”

Khloe smiled against his mouth.

May you like

The secretary was gone.

The queen had arrived, and the city belonged to them.
