Chapter 8

Chapter 8: Elena's Last Secret

Grace could not move.

Her sister stood ten feet away, alive after seven years of silence, speaking about their mother as if the past had never ended.

Dominic was the first to react.

“Who took Evelyn?”

Elena looked at him.

“You.”

His face hardened.

“What?”

“Not you personally.”

She lowered the gun.

“Your family.”

Grace stepped between them.

“Explain.”

Elena looked at her.

“I will.”

She closed the door.

Matteo remained outside.

Grace noticed Elena glance at him.

“Is he yours?”

“Security.”

“For Dominic?”

“Yes.”

Elena nodded.

“Then keep him outside.”

Dominic objected.

“No.”

Elena looked at him.

“If you come inside, you'll bring your world with you.”

Grace looked at Dominic.

He understood.

He stepped back.

“I'm staying here.”

“I know.”

Elena closed the door.

The sisters stood facing each other.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Grace slapped her.

The sound echoed through the room.

Elena didn't defend herself.

Grace's hand trembled.

“You were alive.”

“Yes.”

“You wrote letters.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I existed.”

“Yes.”

“You knew I was looking for you.”

Elena began to cry.

“I know.”

“You let me believe you abandoned us.”

“I thought I was protecting you.”

“You always say that.”

“I know.”

Grace turned away.

“You don't get to use the same excuse every time you hurt me.”

Elena nodded.

“I deserve that.”

Grace looked back.

“Tell me everything.”

Elena took a breath.

“Our mother did not die.”

“I know.”

“She disappeared.”

“I know.”

“She was hiding from Vittorio.”

“Why?”

“Because she discovered that he had arranged the disappearance of a child.”

Grace froze.

“What child?”

Elena hesitated.

“The first child.”

“The trust.”

“Yes.”

Grace shook her head.

“I don't understand.”

Elena sat at the piano.

“Before our mother married Dad, she had another child.”

Grace stared.

“What?”

“A son.”

Dominic stood outside the window, visible through the glass.

Grace could see him.

Elena followed her gaze.

“Dominic doesn't know.”

“Who was the father?”

Elena looked at her.

“Vittorio.”

Grace's mind stopped.

Her mother had been Vittorio's daughter.

That meant—

“No.”

Elena nodded.

“Vittorio had a child with his own daughter?”

“No.”

Grace's expression changed.

Elena immediately shook her head.

“Not like that. Vittorio was not our mother's biological father.”

Grace stared.

“What?”

“Our grandmother was married before Vittorio. Evelyn was not Vittorio's biological daughter.”

The room seemed to become colder.

Elena continued.

“Vittorio raised her. That's why everyone called her his daughter. But biologically, she wasn't.”

Grace remembered the old medical records.

The family tree.

The confusion.

The secret.

“Then who was her father?”

Elena looked toward the recorder.

“The man who founded the Moretti trust.”

“Who?”

“Samuel Hale.”

Grace stopped.

“Dr. Hale?”

“No. His father.”

Grace closed her eyes.

The connections were becoming almost impossible to follow.

Elena continued.

“Samuel Hale Senior was a physician who worked for Vittorio. He and Evelyn's mother had an affair. Evelyn was born. Vittorio discovered it and chose to raise her as his own.”

“Why?”

“Because he loved her.”

Grace swallowed.

“That doesn't explain the child.”

“Elena?”

She looked at her sister.

“Our mother became pregnant when she was nineteen.”

“By whom?”

“Thomas.”

Grace's breath caught.

Her father.

“They were together before the marriage.”

“Yes.”

“So the first child was theirs.”

Elena nodded.

“A boy.”

“What happened?”

“Vittorio took him.”

Grace stared.

“Why?”

“He believed Thomas would destroy Evelyn's future.”

“That's insane.”

“Yes.”

“What happened to the child?”

Elena looked at her.

“He was told the baby died.”

Grace whispered.

“And the trust?”

“Vittorio created it in the child's name.”

“Then why was my name on it?”

“Because when you were born, the account was transferred to you.”

Grace understood.

Her mother had been the first child of one secret.

Grace had become the first legal beneficiary of another.

But Leo's existence had reopened the entire structure.

“Where is the boy?”

Elena's face changed.

“We found him.”

Grace's heart raced.

“Who is he?”

Elena looked toward Dominic.

“That is the problem.”

Dominic entered.

“I heard enough.”

Elena didn't stop him.

He stood before her.

“Who is he?”

Elena looked at Grace.

Then back at Dominic.

“Your brother.”

Dominic stared.

“I don't have a brother.”

“You do.”

“Where is he?”

Elena whispered a name.

“Michael.”

Dominic's face changed.

Grace saw recognition.

“Michael Rinaldi?”

Elena nodded.

Matteo's brother.

Grace looked toward the door.

Matteo was standing there.

He had heard.

His face had gone completely still.

“My brother died,” he said.

Elena looked at him.

“No.”

Matteo stepped inside.

“My mother identified his body.”

“She identified the body they showed her.”

“No.”

Elena moved closer.

“Matteo, your brother was taken when he was four.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I saw him.”

“When?”

“Last month.”

Matteo's breathing became uneven.

“Where?”

“An offshore medical facility.”

Dominic stared.

“Who runs it?”

Elena looked at him.

“Carlo Bellini.”

Silence.

Grace felt sick.

Carlo.

Vanessa's father.

The man who had warned them.

The man who disappeared.

The man who had supposedly protected Elena.

“He runs the facility?”

“Not alone.”

“Who else?”

Elena looked toward the window.

“Dr. Hale.”

Grace's stomach dropped.

“Hale and Carlo.”

“They have been using the foundation for decades.”

“For what?”

“Identity changes.”

“Medical experiments?”

Elena shook her head.

“Not at first.”

“What changed?”

“Money.”

Of course.

Money.

The simplest answer was often the ugliest.

“They found that wealthy families would pay to erase inconvenient relatives. Children. Heirs. Witnesses. People who knew too much.”

Grace thought of the trust.

The properties.

The hospital records.

The missing people.

The hidden accounts.

“All those people.”

“Yes.”

“And our mother?”

“She tried to expose them.”

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

“When?”

“Years ago.”

“And Dad?”

“He helped her.”

“What happened?”

Elena looked down.

“They caught him.”

Grace stopped breathing.

“My father died eleven months ago.”

“I know.”

“You mean they killed him?”

Elena nodded.

“Carlo ordered it.”

The room went silent.

Grace couldn't speak.

Her father.

Her kind, stubborn, quiet father.

The man who had burned toast.

The man who had fixed broken lamps.

The man who had taught her how to ride a bicycle.

Murdered.

Not lost to illness.

Not taken by age.

Killed.

Dominic looked at Elena.

“Why did Carlo warn us?”

“Because he knows the fourth folder exists.”

Grace remembered the warning.

Don't open the fourth folder.

She turned to Elena.

“Where is it?”

Elena's expression changed.

“You don't want to find it.”

“Yes, I do.”

“It contains names.”

“Whose?”

“Everyone.”

Grace waited.

“Everyone Carlo helped disappear.”

Dominic said quietly, “And Michael?”

“Yes.”

Matteo stepped forward.

“Where is my brother?”

Elena looked at him.

“Alive.”

The word broke something in Matteo's face.

“Where?”

“I don't know anymore.”

“Who does?”

“Carlo.”

Matteo turned toward the door.

Dominic stopped him.

“We need a plan.”

“My brother is alive.”

“And if you rush in, they'll move him.”

Matteo's jaw tightened.

Dominic continued.

“We find the fourth folder first.”

Grace nodded.

“And we find Dr. Hale.”

Elena shook her head.

“Hale isn't the real threat.”

“Then who is?”

She looked at Dominic.

“Your father's lawyer.”

Grace's blood ran cold.

“Carlo.”

“No.”

Elena whispered the name.

“Someone above him.”

“Who?”

Elena reached into her coat.

She pulled out an old photograph.

In it stood Vittorio Moretti.

Beside him was a young man.

Grace recognized him immediately.

Carlo.

But behind them stood another person.

An older woman.

Grace stared.

She had seen that face before.

In the family photographs.

In the hospital records.

In the old newspaper clippings.

She was the director of the Moretti Foundation before Dr. Hale.

She was the woman whose name had been removed from every modern document.

Sophia Moretti.

Vittorio's wife.

Dominic's mother.

Grace's grandmother.

The woman everyone believed had died before Grace was born.

Elena whispered,

“She is alive too.”

Dominic took the photograph.

His hands trembled.

“My mother?”

Elena nodded.

“She has been running everything.”

Grace looked at her sister.

“Where is she?”

Elena looked toward the river.

“She has Elena.”

Grace frowned.

“What?”

“I mean herself.”

Grace stared.

Elena corrected herself.

“She has our mother.”

Dominic looked at the photograph again.

“And Carlo?”

“He works for her.”

“And Hale?”

“So does he.”

Matteo's phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

Grace watched him.

“What happened?”

Matteo looked at Dominic.

“They found Carlo.”

“Where?”

“Bell House.”

Grace froze.

“When?”

“Ten minutes ago.”

“Alive?”

Matteo shook his head.

“No.”

Grace's stomach dropped.

“What did they find?”

Matteo's voice became almost inaudible.

“His body.”

“And the fourth folder?”

“Gone.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“She got there first.”

“Who?”

Elena looked at Dominic.

“Your grandmother.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Footsteps.

Everyone turned.

Leo stood at the top of the staircase.

Vanessa was behind him.

He looked frightened.

“Aunt Gracie?”

Grace ran toward him.

“What are you doing up?”

“Someone called me.”

“Who?”

Leo pointed toward the front door.

“A woman.”

Grace froze.

“What woman?”

May you like

Leo whispered,

“She said she was Grandma.”
