Chapter 4

She had refused to be both family and employee during the same argument.

The brass key opened a narrow steel box.

Inside were three folders, an old photograph, a small digital recorder, and a sealed envelope addressed to Grace.

Her hands trembled as she opened it.

The first page was written by Thomas.

Gracie,

If you have reached this box, then the truth has finally become larger than my ability to contain it.

Your mother was Vittorio Moretti’s daughter. I was your father in every way, including the one I know you may now question. You are my child by blood, by name, and by every choice I made after the day you were born.

Grace stopped reading.

Dominic moved closer but said nothing.

She continued.

Vittorio created the trust when you were two. Evelyn refused it. After Leo was born, Elena learned that the trust allowed support for Evelyn’s descendants. She wanted to use it to protect her son without revealing him to the Moretti family.

I helped her.

I also told her not to contact you.

That was my mistake.

I believed distance would keep you safe. Instead, it left both my daughters alone in different ways. I hope one day you can understand me, even if you cannot forgive me.

Grace pressed the page to her chest.

For eleven months, grief had felt unfinished. She had loved Thomas, missed him, and resented him without knowing why.

Now, beneath a train station filled with the faint rumble of the city above, she finally heard the apology he had never been able to say aloud.

“He was my father,” she said.

Dominic nodded. “Nothing in this box changes that.”

Grace wiped her eyes.

“It changes many things.”

“But not that.”

She looked at him.

“My mother was your sister.”

“Yes.”

“That makes you my uncle.”

“So it seems.”

“You are not allowed to become overprotective.”

“I think that may be part of the position.”

“It is not.”

For a moment, the room felt lighter.

Then Matteo opened the second folder.

Inside were years of bank statements.

The trust had remained untouched until six years earlier, shortly after Leo’s birth. Small amounts had been transferred for housing, medical care, and school expenses.

Each transfer had been authorized by the same trustee.

Grace Bennett.

Grace stared at the signature.

“That is my name.”

Dominic looked at her. “Did you sign these?”

“No.”

The signature resembled hers closely.

Even the shape of the final letter looked right.

Matteo examined the pages.

“Thomas may have had legal authority.”

“Then why use my name?”

The digital recorder lay beside the files.

A strip of white tape had been attached to it.

For Grace. Play only when Dominic knows the truth.

Grace pressed the button.

Static filled the small room.

Then Elena’s voice emerged.

“Gracie, I am sorry.”

Grace closed her eyes.

Her sister sounded tired but alive.

“If you are hearing this, then you know about Mom, Vittorio, and the trust. You probably also know Dad helped me use your identity to access it.”

Grace opened her eyes.

Dominic’s expression changed.

Elena continued.

“The trust could only be managed by Mom’s first child or a direct Moretti representative. We could not involve Dominic without exposing Leo. Dad convinced himself that borrowing your name was safer than telling you.”

Grace looked down at the forged signatures.

“I agreed because I was scared. That does not make it right. I used the money only for Leo, and I kept records of everything. I planned to tell you when I knew we were safe.”

Her voice broke briefly.

“We were never safe enough.”

A pause followed.

When Elena spoke again, urgency had entered her voice.

“Three months ago, I stopped using the trust. I told Vanessa everything and began preparing to bring Leo to Dominic.”

Vanessa’s name echoed through the steel room.

“Then another withdrawal appeared.”

Matteo turned the page.

The final transfer had been made one day before the accident.

It was larger than all the others combined.

Elena’s voice lowered.

“That withdrawal was authorized with your name, your identification number, and a copy of your hospital badge.”

Grace felt the air leave her lungs.

“I did not make it,” Elena said. “Dad was already dead. Vanessa did not make it. And the security photograph from the bank shows someone who knew exactly where the cameras were.”

The recording crackled.

“There is one more thing, Gracie. The money was not sent to a Moretti account or a Bellini account.”

Matteo found the final transaction page.

Dominic read the receiving name first.

His face became completely still.

Grace took the document from him.

The money had been transferred into a charitable medical fund registered through St. Catherine Medical Center.

The authorization belonged to someone with access to employee identification records, patient schedules, and private treatment rooms.

At the bottom of the page was the name of the fund’s director.

Grace read it aloud.

“Dr. Samuel Hale.”

Above them, a train passed through Grand Central, shaking dust from the ceiling.

At that exact moment, Grace’s phone began to ring.

The hospital was calling.
