Chapter 14

Chapter 14: The Third Daughter

Nobody spoke.
The photograph remained on the table.
Three women.
One face.
Three identities.
Grace.
Isabella.
And the woman in the photograph.
Elena stared at it.
“I don't know her.”
Grace looked at her.
“She looks exactly like Isabella.”
Isabella stepped closer.
“She is not me.”
Michael took the photograph.
He turned it over.
There was a date.
Yesterday.
And a name.
Sophia.
Not the grandmother.
Not the woman who had controlled the foundation.
The name belonged to the person in the photograph.
Sophia Bennett.
Grace stared.
“Bennett?”
Evelyn sat down.
Her hands were trembling.
“There were three.”
Grace turned.
“Three what?”
“Daughters.”
“Mom.”
“I gave birth to three girls.”
The room became silent.
Grace could barely breathe.
“Why did you tell us there were two?”
“Because I was told the third was dead.”
“By whom?”
“Sophia.”
“Your mother?”
Evelyn nodded.
“She said the baby had a heart defect.”
Isabella's eyes widened.
“That was me.”
“No.”
Evelyn looked at her.
“You survived.”
Isabella whispered,
“So did the third.”
Evelyn nodded.
“I didn't know.”
Grace's mind raced.
If Isabella had survived, then perhaps the third daughter had too.
“Where is she?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Vanessa spoke.
“The photograph may tell us.”
Grace looked at it again.
The woman stood inside a room.
Behind her was a wall covered with maps.
One map showed Bell Island.
Another showed the Moretti estate.
A third showed St. Catherine Medical Center.
The woman was holding a document.
Grace zoomed in.
The document had a seal.
A medical seal.
Dr. Hale's.
Grace's stomach tightened.
“She works with him.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“Then who is she?”
Evelyn stared at the photograph.
“She is the child Sophia was supposed to have.”
Dominic frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Evelyn looked at him.
“Sophia had a daughter before you.”
Grace understood.
“Adrian.”
“Yes.”
“And this woman?”
“His daughter.”
Silence.
Dominic looked at the photograph.
“So she is my niece.”
“Yes.”
Grace stared.
The family tree had become impossible.
But one thing was clear.
This woman was not an enemy by accident.
She had inherited the same obsession.
The same history.
The same desire for control.
“What's her name?”
Evelyn whispered,
“Sophia Bellini.”
Vanessa froze.
“My family?”
Evelyn nodded.
“Carlo's daughter.”
Vanessa's face went white.
“That can't be.”
“It is.”
“Carlo had no children except me.”
“He believed that.”
Vanessa stared at the photograph.
The woman looked exactly like her.
Same dark hair.
Same eyes.
Same sharp cheekbones.
But not the same face.
A different version.
A hidden daughter.
Grace looked at Vanessa.
“You have a sister.”
Vanessa whispered,
“I never knew.”
“She was taken at birth.”
“By whom?”
“Carlo.”
Vanessa looked devastated.
“Why?”
“Because Sophia Bellini was born with evidence that could destroy him.”
“What evidence?”
Evelyn looked toward the folder.
“The original records.”
Grace understood.
Every secret led back to the same thing.
Records.
Names.
Births.
Deaths.
Transfers.
Identities.
People had not disappeared because someone wanted them gone.
They disappeared because their existence threatened the story the powerful families had built.
Grace stood.
“We end this.”
Dominic looked at her.
“How?”
“We expose everything.”
Vanessa shook her head.
“If we release everything, innocent people could be hurt.”
Grace nodded.
“Then we separate the truth from the weapon.”
Michael stepped forward.
“I know how.”
Everyone looked at him.
“The foundation has servers.”
“Where?”
“Three locations.”
“Can you access them?”
“Yes.”
“Can you copy everything?”
“Yes.”
Matteo looked at Dominic.
“We'll need lawyers.”
Dominic nodded.
“Good ones.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I know one.”
Grace looked at her.
“Who?”
“Someone my father feared.”
The next morning, they gathered at the old Moretti estate.
Evelyn sat in the library.
Grace and Isabella stood beside her.
Dominic stood near the window.
Leo was asleep upstairs with Elena.
Vanessa sat beside Matteo.
Michael worked at a laptop.
For the first time, there were no guards in the room.
No secret doors.
No hidden cameras.
No one pretending they weren't afraid.
Grace looked at Isabella.
“Are you ready?”
“No.”
“Me neither.”
They held hands.
Then the front door opened.
A lawyer entered.
He was old.
Carrying a leather case.
Vanessa stood.
“Mr. Rinaldi.”
The man nodded.
“I have waited thirty years for this day.”
Grace frowned.
“Who are you?”
He looked at her.
“Your father's attorney.”
She stared.
“My father had an attorney?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't I know?”
“Because Thomas told me never to contact you unless all three daughters were alive.”
Grace's heart stopped.
“All three.”
The lawyer nodded.
“You are the three heirs.”
“Three?”
“Yes.”
He opened his case.
Inside were three sealed documents.
One for Grace.
One for Isabella.
One for Sophia.
The third daughter.
“The estate cannot be transferred until all three sign.”
Grace looked at Isabella.
“Then we find her.”
The lawyer nodded.
“She knows where you are.”
“Then why hasn't she come?”
“Because she believes you killed her mother.”
Grace froze.
“Who?”
“Evelyn.”
Grace looked at her mother.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
The lawyer continued.
“She believes Evelyn abandoned her.”
Grace understood.
The third daughter had grown up believing the same lie Grace had lived.
Except someone had taught her to hate the family.
Someone had turned her pain into revenge.
Sophia Bellini.
Grace stood.
“Where is she?”
The lawyer handed her a card.
An address.
Grace read it.
St. Catherine Medical Center.
Her blood ran cold.
“She is here.”
Dominic looked at her.
“The hospital.”
Grace nodded.
“The same hospital where everything started.”
They arrived before noon.
The building was still partially closed after the fire.
But the old surgical wing remained intact.
Michael led them through a hidden corridor.
At the end was a locked room.
Grace placed her hand on the panel.
Nothing.
Isabella tried.
Nothing.
Dominic stepped forward.
Nothing.
Then Vanessa approached.
The door opened.
Everyone stared at her.
Vanessa looked confused.
“Why did it open for me?”
Michael studied the mechanism.
“It doesn't recognize blood.”
“What does it recognize?”
“DNA records.”
Vanessa's face changed.
“It recognized my family.”
They entered.
Inside was a laboratory.
Computers.
Files.
Photographs.
And at the center—
a woman.
She turned.
Grace saw her face.
The same face as Isabella.
The same face as the photograph.
The third daughter.
She held a gun.
“You finally came.”
Grace stepped forward.
“We came for you.”
The woman laughed.
“You came to kill me.”
“No.”
“You're lying.”
“My name is Grace.”
“I know.”
“This is Isabella.”
“I know.”
“And you're Sophia.”
The woman lowered the gun slightly.
“My name is Sophia Bellini.”
Grace nodded.
“We know.”
“You don't know anything.”
“I know you believe Mom abandoned you.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know she did.”
“She didn't.”
“She chose them.”
“No.”
Grace took a photograph from her pocket.
Evelyn.
Thomas.
Three babies.
“She thought you were dead.”
Sophia's hand trembled.
“That's what they told her.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Grace looked around the laboratory.
“The people who built this.”
Sophia's eyes moved toward the files.
“You don't understand.”
“Then explain.”
Sophia lowered the gun.
“I was raised here.”
“By Carlo?”
“Yes.”
“He told you Evelyn was responsible.”
“Yes.”
“He told you the Morettis killed your mother.”
“Yes.”
Grace stepped closer.
“Your father lied.”
Sophia shook her head.
“No.”
“He used you.”
“No.”
“He made you believe we were your enemies.”
“No!”
Her voice cracked.
Grace didn't move.
“He did.”
Sophia began to cry.
“I don't know what to believe.”
“You don't have to believe me.”
Grace held out her hand.
“Read it yourself.”
She offered the document.
Sophia hesitated.
Then took it.
It was Carlo's confession.
Signed.
Witnessed.
Everything.
The false records.
The kidnappings.
The foundation.
The murders.
The manipulation of Sophia.
All of it.
Sophia read in silence.
When she finished, she dropped the paper.
“My father.”
“Yes.”
“He lied.”
“Yes.”
“I killed people for him.”
Grace shook her head.
“You were manipulated.”
“But I still did it.”
“Then you answer for what you did.”
Sophia looked at her.
“And you still want me alive?”
Grace nodded.
“Because we're sisters.”
Sophia began to cry.
Isabella walked toward her.
“We're all sisters.”
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Sophia dropped the gun.
It hit the floor.
The sound echoed through the room.
Dominic exhaled.
Matteo moved forward and secured the weapon.
Michael looked at the computer.
“I found the files.”
Grace looked at him.
“All of them?”
“All of them.”
“Then copy them.”
Michael nodded.
The screen filled with names.
Hundreds.
People who had disappeared.
People who had been hidden.
People who had been erased.
Grace looked at the list.
Her father.
Her mother.
Elena.
Isabella.
Sophia.
Michael.
Dominic.
All of them had been trapped inside the same machine.
A machine built from fear.
Grace closed her eyes.
Then she heard a voice behind her.
“Grace.”
She turned.
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
She had followed them.
Grace walked toward her.
“Mom.”
Evelyn looked at all three daughters.
Her daughters.
Alive.
Together.
She began to cry.
“I thought I had lost you.”
Grace embraced her.
Then Isabella.
Then Sophia.
Three daughters.
One mother.
A family that had survived because it refused to stay buried.
But before anyone could speak, Michael's computer sounded.
A notification appeared.
New file uploaded.
Origin: Unknown.
File name:
VITTORIO_MORETTI_FINAL_WILL.
Grace stared.
Dominic stepped closer.
“Open it.”
Michael hesitated.
Then clicked.
The document appeared.
The first line read:
If my three granddaughters are reading this, then Sophia has failed.
Grace frowned.
The second line was worse.
I did not create the trust to protect them.
I created it to protect the person who will eventually destroy the Moretti family.
Grace looked at Dominic.
“Who?”
The document continued.
His name is Leo.
The room went silent.
May you like
Upstairs, somewhere in the hospital, Leo was sleeping.
And none of them knew that the boy they had spent weeks protecting might be the final key to a secret Vittorio Moretti had hidden until his death.
