Chapter 12

Chapter 12: The Succession Agreement

The room beneath Bell Island was hidden behind the library.
The door opened only when Grace and Isabella placed their hands on two separate panels.
The mechanism recognized their fingerprints.
Grace stared.
“This was built for us.”
Isabella nodded.
“Our mother planned it.”
The door opened.
Inside was a circular chamber.
At its center stood a stone table.
On the table was a single black folder.
The original succession agreement.
Dominic remained at the entrance.
“This could be a trap.”
“It is,” Grace said.
He looked at her.
“You know that?”
“Yes.”
“And you're still going in?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Sophia expects us to be afraid.”
Isabella stepped beside Grace.
“She has spent our entire lives using fear.”
Grace nodded.
“We stop giving it to her.”
They entered.
The door closed behind them.
A light turned on.
The folder opened automatically.
The first page contained a family tree.
The second contained financial documents.
The third contained a legal agreement.
Grace read it slowly.
The Moretti estate was to pass to the direct descendants of Evelyn Moretti.
If Evelyn's children were living, the estate would be divided equally.
Grace looked at Isabella.
“Equal.”
“Yes.”
“So Sophia lied.”
“She always does.”
Grace turned the page.
There was another condition.
If either heir refused the inheritance, control passed to the trustee.
Grace's eyes narrowed.
“The trustee.”
Isabella nodded.
“Who?”
Grace read the name.
Carlo Bellini.
“Carlo.”
“He was never the final authority.”
Grace understood.
“He was a puppet.”
“Yes.”
“And the trustee after Carlo?”
Isabella pointed.
Dr. Samuel Hale.
Grace felt sick.
“And after Hale?”
There was no name.
Only a blank line.
Grace looked at Isabella.
“This document was designed to be rewritten.”
“Yes.”
“By Sophia.”
“Yes.”
Grace looked at the final page.
There was a signature.
Sophia Moretti.
But beneath it was another.
Evelyn.
And another.
Thomas.
Grace stared at her father's handwriting.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“He agreed.”
“He had no choice.”
Grace shook her head.
“No. Dad always had a choice.”
Isabella looked at her.
“He chose us.”
Grace closed the folder.
“That isn't enough.”
The speakers activated.
Sophia's voice filled the chamber.
“Sign.”
Grace looked up.
“No.”
“You want Elena alive.”
“Yes.”
“Then sign.”
“No.”
Sophia laughed.
“You think you have power because you discovered a document.”
Grace looked at Isabella.
Then at the hidden camera.
“No.”
Sophia's voice stopped.
Grace continued.
“We have power because you need us.”
Silence.
Isabella stepped forward.
“You need both signatures.”
“Yes.”
“Then you cannot kill Elena.”
Sophia's voice became colder.
“Do not test me.”
“You won't kill her.”
“Why?”
“Because if she dies, Grace and I have no reason to sign anything.”
Sophia was silent.
Grace smiled.
“That's the problem with control.”
“What problem?”
“The person you control eventually learns what you need.”
For the first time, Sophia's silence sounded like fear.
Dominic smiled.
“She's right.”
Grace turned.
He had entered the chamber.
Matteo stood behind him.
Michael followed.
Elena was with them.
Grace's heart jumped.
“Elena!”
Her sister smiled.
“I told you I wasn't going to let them trade me.”
Sophia's voice erupted through the speakers.
“How?”
Elena held up a small device.
“Your own security system.”
Michael smiled.
“I built it.”
Dominic looked at him.
“You've been pretending to be powerless.”
Michael shrugged.
“Three years in captivity teaches you things.”
The lights flickered.
The doors unlocked.
Matteo moved to the control panel.
“Security is down.”
Grace looked at the camera.
“Sophia.”
No answer.
Then the screen changed.
A live image appeared.
Sophia was sitting in a room.
Beside her was Evelyn.
Alive.
Older.
Weak.
But alive.
Grace covered her mouth.
“Mom.”
Evelyn looked at the camera.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Gracie.”
Grace stepped forward.
“Mom.”
“I am sorry.”
Grace shook her head.
“Don't apologize yet.”
Evelyn smiled through tears.
“You always were stubborn.”
“From you.”
“From Thomas.”
Dominic moved closer to the screen.
“Mother.”
Sophia turned toward him.
“You were never supposed to find her.”
“I did.”
“Because she chose them over me.”
Dominic stared.
“She chose her children.”
Sophia's face hardened.
“She chose weakness.”
“No.”
Dominic's voice became quiet.
“She chose love.”
Sophia looked away.
Grace saw something in her expression.
Not anger.
Pain.
The kind of pain that had been turned into cruelty over decades.
“Why did you do it?” Grace asked.
Sophia looked at her.
“Because I lost a daughter.”
“Evelyn?”
“No.”
Grace froze.
Sophia continued.
“I lost another daughter before Evelyn.”
Grace looked at Isabella.
The room went silent.
Sophia's eyes filled with tears.
“She was my first child.”
Dominic stared.
“My mother had another daughter?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Sophia looked at Grace.
“You.”
Grace's heart stopped.
“No.”
“You were not Evelyn's first daughter.”
Grace shook her head.
“You are mine.”
Silence.
Sophia continued.
“Evelyn gave birth to you. But biologically, you were mine.”
Grace couldn't breathe.
“What are you saying?”
“I was your biological grandmother through your father's side.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“Thomas was my son.”
Grace stared.
Dominic looked at Sophia.
“What?”
Sophia continued.
“Thomas was born from my first marriage. He was taken from me when he was an infant.”
Grace's mind reeled.
Thomas.
Her father.
Sophia's son.
That meant—
Grace and Dominic were related through two different lines.
The Moretti bloodline had been hidden inside the Bennett family all along.
Sophia had spent decades trying to control the family because she believed she was correcting an old betrayal.
But there was another truth.
One Sophia had never anticipated.
Thomas had left the family willingly.
He had chosen Evelyn.
And he had chosen Grace.
Grace looked at her grandmother.
“You destroyed my family because Thomas chose my mother.”
Sophia's face broke.
“I thought I could force him to return.”
“You couldn't.”
“No.”
“And you punished everyone instead.”
Sophia looked at Evelyn.
“I was afraid.”
Grace whispered,
“Fear doesn't excuse this.”
Sophia nodded.
“I know.”
Then the screen went black.
An alarm began.
Matteo shouted.
“She's leaving.”
Dominic turned.
“Where?”
Michael looked at the monitor.
“The north dock.”
They ran.
Outside, a helicopter was rising from the island.
Sophia was inside.
Evelyn remained behind.
Grace rushed toward her mother.
They embraced.
Evelyn cried into her daughter's hair.
“My little girl.”
Grace held her.
“You left me.”
“I know.”
“You lied.”
“I know.”
“I hated you.”
“I know.”
Grace pulled back.
“But I missed you.”
Evelyn touched her face.
“I missed you every day.”
Dominic stood nearby.
Evelyn looked at him.
“My son.”
Dominic approached.
He did not speak.
Evelyn touched his cheek.
“You look like your father.”
“I've spent my life trying not to.”
She smiled.
“Then perhaps it is time you stop running from him.”
Grace watched them.
A family separated by secrets.
Finally standing in one room.
Then Matteo's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What?”
Grace looked at him.
“What happened?”
Matteo lowered the phone.
“The hospital has been evacuated.”
“Why?”
“Fire.”
Grace's heart stopped.
“Leo.”
“Vanessa got him out.”
Relief.
Then Matteo continued.
“But she didn't get out.”
Grace's face went white.
“Where is she?”
“The building collapsed.”
Dominic stared.
“No.”
Grace grabbed his arm.
“We're going back.”
Evelyn looked at them.
“Don't.”
Grace turned.
“Mom?”
Evelyn's expression had changed.
“She is not trapped.”
“What?”
Evelyn whispered,
“Vanessa was taken.”
Grace understood.
Sophia hadn't been running away.
May you like
She had been collecting pieces.
And Vanessa was the final piece.
