Chapter 24 - Juniper LeavesCollege.

Boston.

Juniper chose public health.

Not because of asthma exactly.

Because systems fascinated her.

“How rules protect people or fail them,” she said.

Mara would be proud.

Move-in day.

I carried boxes.

She stopped me.

“Dad.”

“What?”

“You’re reorganizing my desk.”

“I’m helping.”

“You’re controlling.”

That word.

I froze.

She softened.

“Not like Grandpa.”

Still.

I stepped back.

“Sorry.”

“Thank you.”

Parenting never stops testing inherited patterns.

Before leaving, I gave her a small envelope.

Inside:

Copy of Mara’s letter about safe adults and secrets.

Juniper read.

Then hugged me.

“You kept this?”

“Yes.”

“I remember.”

“You were six.”

“I remember you crying.”

“I wasn’t crying.”

“You were leaking.”

We laughed.

At the car, I turned back.

Juniper stood at the dorm entrance.

Independent.

Medication plan in place.

Friends.

Phone.

Money she understood.

Voice she trusted.

That was the opposite of the four-year-old reaching upward while an adult held safety out of reach.

I cried all the way to Connecticut.

No shame.
