Chapter 16 - Orson’s First ApologyDad wrote from a court-supervised program.

The first three letters I returned unopened.

The fourth was addressed to Juniper.

I did not give it to her.

Not yet.

I read with therapist and Naomi.

It said:

Juniper, I told myself I was protecting our family. I was protecting my pride. I am sorry I made you afraid. You did nothing wrong.

No excuses.

Then:

I do not expect you to see me. If someday you choose to, I will be grateful. If not, I will understand.

That mattered.

I still did not give it immediately.

Juniper was seven.

We waited.

Months later, therapist recommended telling her Grandpa had written.

“Do I have to read?”

“No.”

“Can you read first?”

“I did.”

“Is it mean?”

“No.”

She chose to hear it.

Afterward:

“Can I draw him something?”

My heart twisted.

“You can.”

She drew a tree.

No message.

We mailed it through counsel.

Dad responded with no request.

Good.

A year later, Juniper asked:

“Can I see Grandpa?”

I was not ready.

Important distinction.

She was.

Therapist suggested controlled supervised visit if legally permitted.

I struggled.

My job was not to force my timeline onto her.

So we prepared.

Public therapeutic center.

Forty-five minutes.

Dad entered.

Older.

Smaller.

Juniper stayed beside me.

He did not approach until she did.

“Hi, Grandpa.”

His face broke.

“Hi, June Bug.”

She asked:

“Why did you take my breathing thing?”

Dad shook.

“I didn’t take it with my hand.”

“Why did you let Aunt Tabitha?”

Truth.

“Because I cared more about fixing my company than making a safe choice for you.”

Juniper frowned.

“That was dumb.”

“Yes.”

“Daddy says that too.”

I almost laughed.

Dad smiled through tears.

“Yes.”

She asked:

“Will you do it again?”

“No.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“Do you still have the big house?”

“No.”

“Good. It was creepy.”

I laughed uncontrollably.

Even Dad did.

That was their first new memory.

Not forgiveness complete.

May you like

Not trust restored.

Just a room where truth existed.
