Chapter 15 - Juniper Goes to SchoolKindergarten arrived.

Juniper’s school created a medical plan.

Nurse.

Teacher.

Backup.

Clear permissions.

I overprepared.

Three meetings.

Four copies.

Labels.

Willa teased over video.

“You laminated a checklist?”

“Yes.”

“You need help.”

“Therapy Thursday.”

Good.

Juniper noticed.

“Daddy, stop.”

“What?”

“I know.”

She had learned age-appropriate management with her care team.

She wanted independence.

I feared independence.

After what happened, control felt like safety.

That was my next challenge.

My therapist said:

“You can become Orson in reverse.”

I hated that.

“What does that mean?”

“If fear makes you control Juniper’s every move, the motive differs but the effect may still limit her.”

Brutal.

Correct.

So I practiced.

Let teachers help.

Let nurse manage school plan.

Let Juniper attend birthday parties with prepared adults.

Trust systems.

Not paranoia.

Healing is often boring exposure to ordinary risk.

One day Juniper came home angry.

“A boy asked why I have medicine.”

“What did you say?”

“That my lungs are dramatic.”

I laughed.

“Where did you get that?”

“Aunt Willa.”

Of course.

“Did he bother you?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then:

“Can Aunt Tabitha come to my school show?”

I froze.

Tabitha had maintained supervised contact for a year.

Therapy.

Community service.

Restitution.

She never pushed.

“Why?”

“She likes my drawings.”

I discussed with therapist.

Naomi.

Then agreed with conditions.

Tabitha sat in the back row beside supervisor.

Juniper showed a watercolor.

Afterward Tabitha said:

“It’s beautiful.”

Juniper replied:

“I know.”

Confidence.

Tabitha cried privately.

We spoke outside.

“Thank you.”

“This was Juniper’s choice.”

“I know.”

“Keep earning it.”

She nodded.

No hug.

Not yet.

But progress.
