Chapter 22 - Orson’s Final LessonDad died when Juniper was seventeen.

Heart failure.

No conspiracy.

No dramatic last-minute confession.

Age and damage.

I visited him the week before.

He was tired.

He asked:

“Did I ruin you?”

“No.”

“Tabitha?”

“No.”

“Juniper?”

I thought.

“You hurt us.”

He nodded.

“Difference.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the window.

“I spent fifty years thinking losing the company would erase me.”

“And?”

“It did.”

I frowned.

“The company is gone.”

“Yes.”

“You’re still here.”

He smiled weakly.

“Exactly.”

His final clear sentence to me:

“Teach Juniper that money is a tool before someone else teaches her it’s identity.”

I promised.

Not because he earned the right to instruct.

Because the lesson was correct.

At his funeral, Juniper cried.

That surprised some relatives.

She loved him.

Also feared him once.

Also forgave parts.

Also never trusted him fully.

People wanted simple relationships.

Life refused.

Tabitha held my hand during the service.

Willa stood beside Juniper.

Family.

Changed.

May you like

Not restored.

Different.
