Chapter 5 - The Morning After the War: Healing Wounds and Confronting the Reality of Our Fake EngagementThe morning sun broke over Boston Harbor, casting long, golden streaks across the cream-colored silk sheets of the Valenti master suite.

I woke up slowly, the rhythmic rise and fall of a warm, muscular chest beneath my cheek grounding me in reality.
Dominic’s arms were wrapped securely around my waist, holding me as if he were terrified that if he let go, I would vanish back into the snowy morning air.
My body ached from the sheer terror and physical exhaustion of the previous night, but my mind was remarkably clear.
The Moretti syndicate’s financial network had been completely seized by federal authorities within three hours of the shipyard raid, thanks to the encrypted drive I brought down.
Vanessa and Marco were sitting in federal holding cells, facing decades behind bars for corporate espionage and racketeering. The threat was gone. The war was over.
Which meant the fake engagement was officially over, too. A heavy, hollow ache settled in my chest at the thought. For the past forty-eight hours, I had lived a life of dizzying danger, high-stakes romance, and undeniable passion.
But now that the dust had settled, I was just Claire Bennett, a freelance event coordinator with a rented apartment in South Boston and a cat waiting to be fed. Carefully, trying not to wake the sleeping mafia king, I began to slide out from beneath his arm.
Before my feet even touched the hardwood floor, a heavy hand shot out, grabbing my wrist and pulling me effortlessly back down against the mattress.
"Where do you think you're going?" Dominic’s voice was deep, raspy with sleep, and completely unyielding. I didn't turn to look at him, staring instead at the magnificent diamond ring still sparkling on my left ring finger.
"My apartment, Dominic.
My cat has been alone for two days, and I have three corporate luncheons to design by Friday.
Real life is waiting." Dominic propped himself up on one elbow, his gray eyes piercing through me with intense focus. He reached out, his long fingers gently turning my chin so I had no choice but to meet his gaze. "Look at me, Claire," he commanded softly.
I looked. The bruises on his face were already fading into pale yellows and purples, but the raw intensity in his eyes was sharper than ever.
"Who said anything about real life waiting outside these gates?" Dominic asked, his thumb tracing the curve of my cheekbone.
"The fake engagement, Dominic," I said, a bittersweet smile touching my lips as I gently tried to slide the blinding diamond ring off my finger. "The whole thing was a strategic lie to keep Moretti off my back. Now that Moretti is locked up, there’s no reason to keep playing pretend.
You don't need a fiancée, and I certainly don't need to be tangled up in the underworld." Before the ring could slide past my knuckle, Dominic’s hand closed over mine, stopping me instantly.
He stripped the ring off my finger—only to take my hand again and press a completely different ring into my palm.
I looked down. It was a simpler, breathtaking vintage platinum band encrusted with delicate emeralds and diamonds—an heirloom that had belonged to his grandmother.
"Who said anything about pretending?" Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"The moment I woke up in my bed yesterday morning and found you sleeping beside me in my shirt, I didn't care about syndicate politics or corporate archives. I just knew I never wanted to wake up without you again." My breath hitched in my throat. "Dominic..."
"The engagement was fake," he murmured, leaning in so his lips brushed mine. "The feelings were the only real thing in a world full of lies. Marry me, Claire. For real this time."
Planning an exclusive private gala for Boston’s elite was my profession, but designing my own wedding inside a heavily fortified underworld estate was an entirely different kind of masterclass.
Within a week of the shipyard raid, the Valenti estate transformed from a cold, imposing fortress of power into a breathtaking winter wonderland.
Thousands of white hydrangeas, frosted silver pine branches, and cascading crystal fairy lights draped over the grand ballroom and gardens, turning the sprawling grounds into something straight out of a storybook. Of course, my 'suppliers' were slightly different than usual.
"Claire, if one more armored truck arrives carrying imported orchids from Amsterdam, my security checkpoint is going to stage a mutiny," Dominic muttered playfully, walking up behind me as I stood on a ladder adjusting a floral archway in the grand foyer.
He wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder as I meticulously pinned a cluster of silver-dusted roses into place.
"Tell your guards that perfection requires sacrifice," I smiled, leaning back against his chest and inhaling his familiar cedar-and-cologne scent. "Besides, if we’re going to host the most talked-about wedding in Boston, the floral arrangements need to be bulletproof—literally."
Dominic chuckled, turning me around in his arms so I was facing him.
The terrifying underworld boss who had once made entire syndicates tremble now wore a soft, completely besotted expression whenever he looked at me.
"Everything is ready," Dominic murmured, his hands resting securely on my hips. "The guest list has been vetted, the federal authorities have cleared the venue, and my mother’s vintage wedding gown is waiting upstairs for you."
I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck.
"Are you nervous, Mr. Valenti? I thought nothing in this city could rattle you." "Only one thing," he admitted softly, his gray eyes locking onto mine with fierce devotion.
"The thought that you might still wake up one morning and decide you want a quiet, boring life away from me." I leaned up, pressing a tender kiss to his lips.
"You think a quiet life could ever compete with this? You ruined normal for me, Dominic.

And I wouldn't have it any other way." As we stood wrapped in each other's arms beneath the glittering crystal chandelier of the grand foyer, I realized how far I had come from that exhausted event planner hiding in the west wing at midnight.
I hadn't just survived Boston’s underworld—I had conquered it, armed with nothing more than grace, courage, and an unbreakable love that defied all the rules.
