Chapter 1 - The Midnight Mistake That Turned Boston’s Most Feared Underworld Boss Into My Unexpected ProtectorWaking up in the private bedroom of Boston’s most feared underworld boss could have ended my career—but being discovered in his bed, wearing his shirt, was only the beginning.

Before I could explain myself, Dominic Valenti announced I was his fiancée, and the frightened look on his guards’ faces told me the lie wasn’t protecting my reputation—it had just made me important to people I never wanted knowing my name.

The first thing I saw that morning was a black serpent tattoo wrapped around a scarred forearm. Then the arm tightened around my waist.

I stopped breathing. A warm body was pressed against my back beneath the dark blanket, and a heavy hand rested across my stomach.

Beyond the enormous windows, winter sunlight covered the gardens of the Valenti estate. I knew those gardens well.

I had spent nearly nineteen hours preparing them for one of Boston’s most exclusive private events.

My name is Claire Bennett, and at thirty-one, I had built my career around solving impossible problems for demanding clients.

The previous evening had tested every ounce of that skill. Florists arrived late. A pastry display collapsed.

Two musicians threatened to leave. My supervisor, Vanessa, spent most of the night blaming me for problems she had created herself.

Near midnight, after she snapped at me for sitting down for thirty seconds, I went searching for replacement linens in the west wing.

I found an empty bedroom. My feet were throbbing, so I sat on the edge of the bed.

“Five minutes,” I told myself.

Apparently, I slept until morning. And somehow Dominic Valenti had joined me. Everyone in Boston’s luxury-event world knew that serpent tattoo.

Dominic controlled a vast network of businesses, and his family’s reputation made even influential people choose their words carefully around him.

I slowly shifted toward the edge of the mattress. His arm tightened. “Don’t.” My pulse jumped. “I can explain.” “I’m hoping you can.”

I turned. Dominic was already awake, watching me with cool gray eyes. “You found me here?” “Yes.” “And you decided to... stay?”

His mouth almost curved. “It’s my bedroom.” Before I could respond, something struck the door. Dominic’s expression changed instantly.

The relaxed man disappeared. His attention snapped toward the entrance as he pulled me closer. The doors opened.

An elegant older woman entered with a silver-tipped cane, followed by two security officers.

Her eyes moved from Dominic to me. Then downward. Only then did I realize I was wearing a black shirt several sizes too large.

His shirt. My face burned. “I can explain this.” The woman smiled. “So this is her.” I blinked. “Her who?” Beside me, Dominic became completely still.

Then hurried footsteps sounded in the hallway. A security officer appeared at the doorway, breathing hard. “Mr. Valenti, we have a problem.” Dominic stood. “What happened?”

The man glanced at me and immediately stopped talking. Dominic’s voice hardened. “Say it.” “They know she’s inside the estate.” A chill moved through me.

“Who knows?” Nobody answered. I climbed out of bed. “Dominic, what is happening?”

He looked toward the older woman. She gave him a tiny nod. Whatever passed between them made my uneasiness deepen. Then Dominic took my hand.

“Whatever happens downstairs, stay beside me.” “No. First you’re going to tell me why people are apparently asking about me.” Another guard appeared. “Sir, vehicles are gathering outside the east gate.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened. “How many?” “Seven.” The room fell silent. I pulled my hand away. “I’m an event planner. I arrange flowers and seating charts.

Why would anyone care that I’m here?” Dominic studied me for a long second. Then he turned toward his security team. “From this moment forward, Claire Bennett is under family protection.” The older woman raised an eyebrow.

“That won’t be enough.” Dominic knew it too. I could see him making a decision I clearly wasn’t going to like. Finally, he looked directly at the guards.

“Tell everyone she’s my fiancée.” I stared at him. “Your what?” Nobody laughed. Instead, the guards exchanged alarmed looks. That frightened me more than anything. Then one of his guards touched his earpiece.

“Sir... the people outside already heard.”

Dominic stepped in front of me as headlights appeared beyond the frozen garden. And only then did I understand.

His fake engagement hadn’t gotten me out of danger. It had just told everyone outside exactly how valuable I was.

The heavy oak doors of the master suite remained shut, but the muffled commotion echoing up the grand staircase told me everything I needed to know.

The outside world had breached the Valenti gates, and my quiet, orderly life as a freelance event coordinator had officially ceased to exist.

Standing barefoot on the polished hardwood floor, I stared at Dominic with a mixture of sheer panic and rising fury.

The silk fabric of his black shirt brushed against my knees, a constant reminder of how deeply compromised my position was.

"Are you out of your mind?" I hissed, keeping my voice low enough so the guards stationed outside wouldn't catch every word.

"Fiancée? You expect me to play the role of your devoted fiancée to a bunch of armed thugs standing at your front gate?"

Dominic adjusted the cuffs of a fresh shirt he had pulled from his walk-in closet, his movements calm, precise, and terrifyingly controlled. His gray eyes flicked toward me, devoid of panic.

"They aren't just thugs, Claire.

They are representatives of the Moretti syndicate. And if they knew you were just an exhausted event planner who stumbled into the wrong room, they wouldn't negotiate—they would use you as leverage to tear my empire apart." "Leverage?" I took a sharp breath, my fingers curling into fists.

"I don't belong in your world! I have a rented apartment in South Boston, a cat waiting to be fed, and three corporate luncheons to design by Friday!

Let me walk out that side door, and I promise you, I'll pretend I never saw your tattoo, your bedroom, or any of this madness!"

The elegant older woman—whom Dominic had addressed earlier as Elena, the matriarch of the household—stepped forward, leaning heavily on her silver-tipped cane. Her sharp, piercing gaze dissected me from head to toe.

"You think discretion protects you, child?" Elena’s voice was like grinding stones, smooth yet unyielding.

"The moment Dominic’s security guards reported an unauthorized civilian inside the private wing last night, eyes across the city were alerted.

Moretti’s informants have been watching this estate for weeks.

They know a woman entered through the service elevators at midnight and never left. If Dominic walks you out to the gate right now and claims you're nobody, Moretti’s men will intercept you before you reach your car.

You’ll be interrogated, tortured, and executed just to see how Dominic reacts." A cold shiver rushed down my spine.

The casual way she spoke of torture made my stomach churn. "This is insane. This is kidnapping with extra steps!" "It's survival,"

Dominic intervened, his deep voice cutting through the tension. He walked over, standing dangerously close. Despite my anger, my body reacted to his proximity—the faint scent of cedar and expensive cologne wrapping around me.

"And right now, your survival depends entirely on playing your part. The ring is already being sorted." "Ring?" I squeaked. "You didn't even propose!" "Consider yourself proposed to," he replied deadpan, though a faint, wicked smirk touched the corner of his lips.

"Downstairs, the Moretti delegation is demanding entry to inspect the estate under the pretext of investigating a security breach.

If they see you clinging to my arm, wearing my family heirloom, and looking every bit the pampered, untouchable fiancée of Dominic Valenti, federal and syndicate protocols prevent them from touching you without declaring outright war."

"And if I refuse?" Dominic’s gray eyes darkened, the warmth evaporating entirely. "Then I’ll still protect you, Claire, but you’ll be locked in this room under armed guard while I wage a war outside your door.

Choose." I swallowed hard. The choice was an illusion. My life had been hijacked by a sleeping mistake in a billionaire gangster's bed.

Ten minutes later, I stood before a towering, ornate mirror. Elena had summoned a stylist from the private vault—or perhaps she kept them on retainer—who quickly dressed me in a stunning emerald-green silk dress that hugged my curves and contrasted sharply against my pale skin.

My hair was swept into an intricate chignon, and resting heavily on my left ring finger was a blinding, flawless diamond ring that felt like a pair of handcuffs forged in platinum.

"Remember," Dominic murmured, leaning down so his lips brushed the shell of my ear as we prepared to descend the grand staircase. "Never show fear. In our world, fear is an invitation to bleed. Just smile, hold my arm, and let me do the talking."

As the grand double doors of the foyer swung open, revealing the cold, predatory faces of the Moretti enforcers waiting below, I took a deep, shuddering breath.

I wasn't Claire Bennett, the stressed-out event planner anymore. For better or worse, I was about to become the most dangerous woman in Boston.
