Chapter 2 - The Secret Meeting in the Shadows: Why the Moretti Syndicate Is Desperately Hunting My PastThe marble foyer of the Valenti estate echoed with the heavy, calculated footsteps of men who were accustomed to dictating terms to the city of Boston.

As Dominic and I descended the sweeping staircase, the collective gaze of six armed Moretti enforcers locked onto us.

At their head stood Marco Moretti Jr., a slick, perpetually sneering heir to the rival syndicate, dressed in an impeccably tailored charcoal suit that couldn't mask the brutal reputation of his family.

Marco’s eyes swept over me, lingering on the emerald dress and the blinding diamond ring sparkling under the crystal chandelier.

A flicker of genuine confusion, quickly masked by predatory amusement, crossed his face. "Valenti," Marco called out, his voice smooth and dripping with false politeness.

"We heard rumors that a security breach rattled your inner sanctum last night. Father sent us to ensure our dear neighbors weren't compromised.

But it seems... congratulations are in order?" Dominic didn't break stride. He wrapped his arm firmly around my waist, pulling me flush against his side with an air of absolute possession.

Every muscle in his body radiated coiled tension, ready to strike at the slightest provocation.

"My personal life is hardly your concern, Marco," Dominic replied, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register.

"Unless your father has developed an uncharacteristic interest in my domestic arrangements." "Not your domestic arrangements, no," Marco smiled thinly, taking two steps forward before Dominic’s guards silently raised their weapons, stopping him dead in his tracks. Marco raised his hands in mock surrender, his eyes darting back to me.

"It’s just... highly irregular. An unknown civilian wandering into the Valenti stronghold at midnight, and by morning, she’s wearing the family ring? People in our line of work are naturally curious about sudden, miraculous romances."

I felt my throat tighten, but remembering Dominic’s warning about fear, I forced my chin up. I met Marco’s predatory gaze with a cold, unimpressed stare that I usually reserved for entitled brides demanding impossible floral arrangements.

"Some people spend their lives sneaking around looking for secrets, Marco," I said, my voice surprisingly steady.

"Others are simply invited into the right rooms." Marco’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second—just long enough for me to know my words had hit their mark. He hadn't expected the frightened event planner to bite back.

Dominic looked down at me, a flicker of genuine respect flashing in his gray eyes before he turned his attention back to the syndicate prince.

"You have your answer, Marco. My estate is secure, my fiancée is safe, and your welcome in this house expired the moment you stepped past the foyer. Get out before I forget my manners." The tension in the room thickened to a suffocating degree.

For a heart-stopping moment, I thought guns were going to clear leather right there on the marble floor.

Marco’s jaw tightened, his eyes narrowing as he weighed the cost of a shootout inside the Valenti fortress. Finally, Marco chuckled, a dry, humorless sound.

"Enjoy your engagement, Valenti. Fast romances often end in spectacular tragedies in this city."

With a sharp nod to his men, Marco turned and walked out, the heavy oak doors slamming shut behind them. I exhaled a breath I felt like I’d been holding for an hour, my knees suddenly feeling weak beneath the emerald silk.

Dominic caught me before I could sway, sweeping me effortlessly toward a private parlor away from the guards.

Once the mahogany doors clicked shut, locking us in privacy, I pulled away from him, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"What was that? Why were they so fixated on a midnight breach? That wasn't just about normal neighborhood rivalry, Dominic.

They were looking for me specifically." Dominic poured two glasses of amber whiskey from a crystal decanter, handing one to me. I took it, needing the burn to steady my nerves.

"They weren't just looking for an intruder," Dominic said quietly, leaning against the edge of a mahogany desk.

"They were looking for a file that was stolen from the city archives last night—a file containing property deeds and financial records linked to the old harbor district. Records that my family holds, and that Moretti wants to bulldoze for his offshore operations." I stared at him, my mind racing.

"And what does that have to do with me?" Dominic’s gray eyes locked onto mine. "The archive office was broken into at 11:45 PM.

The security guard was knocked out. And the only fingerprint found on the vault door... belonged to your supervisor, Vanessa." My glass nearly slipped from my fingers.

"Vanessa? That’s impossible! She’s a neurotic event coordinator who cries when a centerpiece is two inches off center!" "People wear many masks, Claire," Dominic said grimly.

"And last night, Vanessa used your company badge to access the archives, stole the documents, and dropped them off at your event venue before vanishing. The Moretti syndicate knows the documents passed through your workplace. And right now, they think you have them."

The revelation hit me like a physical blow. Vanessa—the woman who had screamed at me for sitting down for thirty seconds, the woman who blamed me for every catering disaster—was a syndicate operative?

My mind reeled, rejecting the absurdity of it, yet every piece of the puzzle suddenly clicked into terrifying alignment. "No," I whispered, backing away until the back of my knees hit a plush velvet sofa. I sank down, my hands trembling as I clutched the crystal whiskey glass.

"This is insane. Vanessa is obsessed with hydrangeas and pastel tablecloths. She spends hours arguing with bakers over buttercream frosting!"

"Cover stories are designed to be mundane, Claire," Dominic said softly, walking over and kneeling down in front of me so our eyes were level. His large, warm hands gently covered my trembling fingers, steadying the glass.

"The best spies and couriers live the most boring lives. Your event planning agency was acquired six months ago by a shell company fronting for Moretti money.

You were just an innocent, exceptionally talented coordinator they used as blind foot-traffic to move stolen documents through high-profile venues without suspicion."

I stared at him, feeling the entire foundation of my adult life crumble beneath my feet. Every promotion, every successful gala, every compliment from Vanessa—it had all been a rigged game. I was nothing more than an unwitting pawn in a high-stakes underworld chess match.

"If Moretti thinks I have the documents..."

I whispered, the horror dawning on me. "If they think I took the file from the venue..." "Then you are the most valuable, and most hunted, person in Boston," Dominic finished for me, his voice firm and unwavering.

"Which is why you are staying right here, under my roof, wearing my ring. To the city of Boston, you are Claire Valenti—soon-to-be wife of the city's most untouchable man.

No one touches my fiancée and lives to draw breath."

"And when this is over?" I asked, my voice cracking with a mixture of fear and defiance. "When you find your precious documents and crush Moretti? What happens to the fake fiancée?"

Dominic’s expression shifted, a strange, unreadable shadow crossing his features.

He didn't answer immediately. Instead, his thumb brushed gently over the massive diamond ring on my finger. "Let’s focus on keeping you alive first, Claire," he murmured softly.

Before I could demand a straight answer, a sharp chime echoed from the hallway. One of Dominic’s elite guards hurried into the parlor, breathless and pale.

"Boss," the guard said urgently.

"We just tracked Vanessa’s digital footprint. Her phone pinged from a burner tower downtown. But... she’s not alone. She’s meeting with Marco Moretti right now."

Dominic stood up instantly, all gentleness vanishing, replaced by the lethal focus of a predator locked on its prey. "Where?" "The abandoned railway terminal on the North End. And boss... they aren't just talking. They've deployed an extraction team.

They know Claire is here, and they're launching a raid on the estate tonight." I scrambled to my feet, the whiskey forgotten. "A raid? On this house? With what, an army?"

"With enough firepower to level a block," Dominic said grimly, turning to his head of security. "Seal the perimeter. Activate the subterranean safe rooms. And bring me my coat."

May you like

He looked back at me, his gray eyes burning with an intense, protective fury that sent a wild, forbidden thrill through my veins. "

Pack a bag, Claire," Dominic commanded, his voice brooking no argument. "We’re leaving the estate. Because if Moretti wants my fiancée, I’m going to show him exactly what happens when you poke a sleeping dragon."
