Chapter 5

Bella’s first act in power saved money rather than claiming it. She canceled the eight-million-dollar transfer. But the cancellation also told Victoria Rever that Adriano had lost control.

Adriano’s phone vibrated. Bianca’s name appeared beside a photograph of a wedding dress. The room remained silent while he turned the phone face down.

“Call her,” Matteo said. “Ask whether Victoria Rever intends to stabilize Eastport.”

Adriano did not move. Bella saw the moment he began to understand that the woman he had chosen might have been choosing something else entirely.

Across the city, Bianca learned Adriano had lost control when a waiter returned her declined platinum card. A single message followed: Corporate access suspended.

She called Adriano seven times before he answered. “What did you do?”

For several seconds, he said nothing. Then he spoke five words she had never imagined hearing. “It was never really mine.”

Bianca reached Moretti headquarters twenty minutes later and demanded an escorted visit to the boardroom. She expected Adriano to command the room. Instead, he stood near the windows while Bella sat beside David Chen.

“You did this because he chose me,” Bianca said.

“No,” Bella replied. “If he had bought you an apartment with his own money, I would have divorced him and never learned the unit number. Everything legally yours remains yours. The rest is evidence.”

Bianca looked at Adriano. “You told me it belonged to us.”

His reply came painfully quiet. “I thought everything belonged to me.”

She studied him as if seeing a stranger stripped of lighting and title. “Rever was right. Without the trust, you are only a man with an expensive watch.”

Security moved to escort her out. In the private lobby, Bianca stumbled and caught the wall. Adriano followed before anyone could stop him. “Are you hurt?”

She turned into his chest as if panic had finally broken her. “Was any of it real?”

His hands rose automatically to steady her. Bianca’s right hand disappeared between them. Her fingers found the inside pocket she had watched him use on Friday night and closed around the slim black authentication key. She drew it into her sleeve while her face remained against his shoulder.

Security took her arm. Adriano watched them lead her toward the elevator. He did not notice that the weight inside his jacket had changed.

The first warning arrived forty minutes later. David received a security alert from Eastport. At 2:30 the following morning, Rever could submit one final acquisition order using Adriano’s physical authentication key. If the order cleared, Rever would take control of the terminal and eighteen hundred employees before the trustees could object.

Adriano read the alert twice. “He cannot submit it without my key.”

David looked at him. “Where is it?”

Adriano reached into his jacket. The inner pocket was empty.

Matteo reached for his phone. “I will have men find her.”

Bella stopped him. “No private punishment. That key controls eighteen hundred jobs. If our men drag Bianca into a warehouse, the evidence becomes a family feud and Rever becomes the victim. This family handled threats before federal agents knew our name, and that is why everyone around you confuses power with permission. It ends here.”

Matteo stared at her. Then he canceled the call.

“There is one way to kill the key,” Adriano said. “Every instruction authenticated by the key created an unchangeable copy in a master archive beneath Moretti Pier 9. If the archive proves Rever’s Eastport order was built on a forgery, publishing it would automatically revoke the key.”

“Then publish it,” David said.

Adriano did not move. “The archive also contains my original instruction. The eight-million-dollar transfer had begun as my theft. If I release the archive, I give prosecutors the case against me.”
