Chapter 4

At 10:03 Monday morning, Adriano Moretti walked into the executive boardroom carrying coffee and wearing the satisfied expression of a man who had spent the weekend celebrating his freedom. That expression vanished when he saw his father seated at the head of the table. Matteo had not occupied that chair in four years.
Alina sat beside him with three sealed folders. Two independent trustees appeared on secure screens. David Chen, chief operating officer, occupied a seat near the end of the table. Adriano’s usual chair had been moved away from the head.
He stopped. “What happened?”
Matteo looked at the clock. “Sit down.”
Alina opened the first folder. “Apartment 6B, Harbor House. Two-year lease funded through Moretti Legacy Holdings. One hundred eighty thousand transferred to Bandi Jewelers through an executive hospitality account. Vehicle and aviation expenses assigned to Bianca Richi through Moretti subsidiaries.”
Adriano’s face tightened. “Where did you get those records?”
Matteo answered. “From the accounts you were arrogant enough to call yours.”
“Your files?”
“Your files. That is the reason we are here.”
Alina opened the second folder. “Eight million dollars scheduled for transfer to Bianca Richi Consulting, followed by an investment into Reva Capital.”
Adriano looked at David. “That is a strategic transaction.”
“Then explain the strategy.” David’s voice was flat. “Reva will stabilize Eastport.”
“Eastport does not require stabilization. It is profitable and current on every obligation.”
For the first time, Adriano seemed unsure which lie he had been given. Alina played forty seconds from Bella’s recording. Rever’s voice filled the boardroom: It will be once the guarantees are called.
Adriano stood. “She followed me.”
Matteo leaned forward. “Sit down. My pregnant wife recorded a private meeting.”
“Your pregnant wife discovered you were preparing to fund the forced default of a terminal with money protected for her child.”
David slid one page across the table. Two columns showed the truth. Eastport was profitable. Rever’s document manufactured a default so he could seize it cheaply.
Adriano reached for the wall phone. “Security, lock this floor.”
“I cannot accept your instruction,” the director answered. “Your emergency authority has been suspended.”
The silence afterward was the first proof that Adriano no longer controlled the room. He turned on David. “You went around me.”
“My sister supervises Eastport’s second shift. Rever’s plan calls her and six hundred others redundant. You saw numbers. I saw names.”
Alina watched his face. “Did you review the guarantee? Did you ask independent counsel? Or did Bianca tell you it would keep your affair and private spending away from the trustees?”
Adriano turned toward his father. “You cannot remove me because my wife is angry.”
“No,” Matteo said, “but the trustees can suspend you because you used protected assets, concealed the use, and authorized a transaction against the next beneficiary’s interests.”
“I built this company for twelve years.”
“You managed what four generations built. That is not the same as owning it.”
The vote stripped Adriano of protected accounts and operating control. His voice became quiet. “Who controls it now?”
No one answered immediately. Then Matteo looked toward the closed doors. They opened.
Bella entered wearing a deep blue maternity dress and low shoes, one hand supporting the weight beneath her belly. Dante remained outside. She had asked him to bring her to the building, not into the room.
Adriano stared as though someone he had already buried had returned.
Bella took the empty chair beside David Chen rather than the one beside Matteo. Alina opened the third folder. “Until the review is complete, Isabella Romano Moretti will serve as protective representative for the unborn beneficiary. David Chen will hold operating authority. Every protected transaction requires approval from independent counsel and one outside trustee.”
Adriano looked from Bella to David. “You took everything.”
“No,” Bella met his eyes. “I protected what was never yours to give away.”

“You planned this while sleeping beside me.”
“I planned my exit while you used our son’s future to build another woman a home.”
