Chapter 9: Darkness Falls

### Chapter 9: Darkness Falls
The scream ripped through the darkness like shattered glass.
It was followed by another.
Then another.
Within seconds, the entire maternity wing dissolved into chaos.
Emergency alarms failed to sound.
The air-conditioning shut off.
Every light in the corridor disappeared.
Only the faint blue glow of emergency exit signs painted ghostly shadows across the walls.
Inside Chloe's room, everyone froze.
Emma instinctively grabbed her flashlight.
Attorney Harrison pulled Chloe's hospital bed away from the window.
Richard stood in front of his great-granddaughter-in-law without hesitation, gripping his silver-headed cane like a weapon.
His voice remained astonishingly calm.
"Nobody leaves this room."
---
Outside...
Footsteps echoed through the hallway.
Not running.
Walking.
Slow.
Measured.
Purposeful.
One...
Two...
Three...
Each step seemed to come closer.
The bodyguards outside Richard's suite immediately drew their expandable batons.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Only another step.
One guard reached for his radio.
Static.
Nothing but static.
"The communications are dead."
The second guard whispered,
"This isn't a power outage."
"It's a blackout."
---
Inside the room...
Emma checked her laptop.
The battery still had power.
Yet the screen continued displaying only one message.
THE COVENANT IS WATCHING.
Then another line slowly appeared.
THREE MINUTES.
Harrison frowned.
"Three minutes until what?"
Nobody answered.
Because nobody knew.
---
Suddenly—
BANG!
A heavy object slammed against the hallway wall.
One of Richard's bodyguards shouted.
"Contact!"
The sound of a violent struggle erupted outside.
Punches.
Furniture crashing.

Someone gasping for air.
Then—
Silence.
Complete silence.
Richard's eyes narrowed.
His two personal bodyguards had served him for nearly twenty years.
Former special operations soldiers.
Men who had survived war zones.
Neither would fall easily.
Yet...
Neither was speaking anymore.
---
The hospital door handle slowly began turning.
Once.
Twice.
Then stopped.
Everyone stared.
The handle remained perfectly still.
Another few seconds passed.
Then—
Three slow knocks.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
No one moved.
A calm male voice spoke from the other side.
"Chairman Sterling."
"I know you're inside."
The voice was smooth.
Cultured.
Almost polite.
"We're not here to hurt the young woman."
Chloe instinctively held her belly tighter.
Richard answered without approaching the door.
"Then why are you here?"
A brief silence.
Then the stranger replied,
"To recover something that belongs to us."
Emma quietly whispered,
"The flash drive."
Richard nodded almost imperceptibly.
The stranger continued.
"Open the door."
"Give us Edward's files."
"And everyone walks away alive."
---
Richard smiled.
It wasn't a warm smile.
It was the smile that had terrified hostile negotiators for decades.
"You've made one mistake."
"Oh?"
"You assume I'm willing to negotiate."

Silence.
Then...
The stranger laughed softly.
"I was hoping you'd say that."
---
Suddenly—
Every monitor inside Chloe's room switched on simultaneously.
Although none of them had power.
Every screen displayed the same image.
A live security camera feed.
Not from the hospital.
From somewhere else.
The camera overlooked a quiet suburban house.
A woman in her early fifties watered flowers in the front garden.
Chloe frowned.
"Who is she?"
Emma's face drained of color.
"Oh no..."
Richard looked toward her.
"You know her?"
Emma nodded slowly.
"My mother."
The stranger spoke again through the closed door.
"We know where every member of your investigation team lives."
The image changed.
Another screen.
A little boy stepping off a school bus.
Emma gasped.
"My nephew..."
Another screen.
An elderly man reading a newspaper.
"Harrison..."
Richard whispered.
"Your father?"
Harrison could barely speak.
"Yes."
The final screen showed Richard's private estate.
His household staff.
His gardeners.
His drivers.
All unaware they were being watched.
The stranger's voice remained perfectly calm.
"This is why people stop investigating us."
"Not because they're afraid for themselves."
"They're afraid for everyone else."

---
Emma's hands trembled.
"They've been watching us..."
"For how long?"
The answer came instantly.
"Long enough."
---
Richard's expression remained unreadable.
But inside...
Rage unlike anything he had felt in decades ignited.
These people hadn't simply murdered his son.
They hadn't merely targeted Chloe.
They had spent years infiltrating every corner of their lives.
Watching.
Waiting.
Manipulating.
Like parasites feeding in silence.
---
Then—
A soft vibration came from Chloe's hospital bed.
Everyone looked down.
Her fetal heart monitor.
The baby's heartbeat had suddenly accelerated.
The monitor flashed a warning.
Fetal Distress Detected.
The nurse rushed forward.
"She's under too much stress!"
Chloe doubled over, clutching her stomach.
A sharp pain shot through her abdomen.
"No..."
She whispered.
"Please..."
Another contraction seized her body.
The nurse looked horrified.
"This isn't normal."
Richard immediately knelt beside her.
"Chloe."
She looked at him through tears.
"I can't lose this baby."
"You won't."
His answer was absolute.
"You have my word."
---
Before anyone could react further—
The hospital door exploded inward.
The lock shattered.
Wood splintered across the floor.
Smoke filled the entrance.
Richard's bodyguards, bruised but still conscious, staggered back into the room.
Behind them...
A tall man dressed entirely in black stepped through the smoke.
His face remained hidden behind a matte black tactical mask.
Black gloves.
Black suit.
No visible weapon.
Only calm, controlled movements.
He slowly removed one glove.
On the inside of his wrist...
A small silver tattoo became visible.
An ancient-looking emblem.
A serpent coiled around a crown.
Emma's eyes widened.
"The Covenant..."
The masked man inclined his head slightly.
"Good."
"At least one of you recognizes us."
Then his gaze shifted past everyone else...
And settled directly on Chloe.
More precisely...
On her unborn child.
His voice was almost gentle.
May you like
"We've been searching for that child..."
"...long before she was conceived."
