Chapter 6: The Enemy Within

### Chapter 6: The Enemy Within
The morning sunlight had barely reached the glass towers of Sterling Headquarters when the emergency board meeting exploded into chaos.
Twenty-four directors sat around the enormous walnut conference table.
No one spoke above a whisper.
No one dared be the first to challenge Richard Sterling.
Until now.
At the far end of the room, Director Samuel Pierce slowly adjusted his tie before breaking the silence.
"Chairman."
His voice was respectful.
Too respectful.
"With all due sympathy for your family crisis..."
He folded his hands neatly on the table.
"...Sterling Corporation cannot afford instability."
Several directors exchanged uneasy glances.
Richard remained perfectly still.
"Continue."
Samuel nodded.
"Our stock has already fallen nearly twenty percent."
"Investors are panicking."
"The media is portraying this family as violent and divided."
He paused.
"I believe..."
"...for the good of the company..."
"...you should temporarily step aside."
The room became so silent that even the air-conditioning seemed loud.
Attorney Harrison looked at Samuel in disbelief.
Richard simply leaned back.
"And who," he asked calmly, "would replace me?"
Samuel smiled.
Almost imperceptibly.
"The board should elect an interim executive."

Several hands slowly rose around the table.
Richard counted them.
One.
Three.
Seven.
Eleven.
Almost half the board.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
He had expected opportunists.
He hadn't expected them to move this quickly.
---
Meanwhile...
Inside Sterling Memorial Hospital...
Chloe sat upright for the first time since the surgery.
A physical therapist had helped her take a few careful steps across the room.
Every movement still hurt.
Every breath reminded her how close she had come to death.
Yet she refused to stay in bed.
"I need to get stronger."
The nurse smiled.
"You should rest."
Chloe gently placed both hands over her belly.
"My baby needs a mother who can stand."
Before the nurse could reply—
A sharp knock sounded.
Two detectives entered.
Behind them came a woman in her early thirties carrying a slim laptop.
The detective introduced her.
"This is Agent Emma Brooks."
"She's our digital forensic specialist."
Emma gave Chloe a reassuring smile.
"I'm sorry to disturb your recovery."
"But we found something."
She opened her laptop.
A hospital surveillance video appeared.
The timestamp read:
11:42 PM
The night before Chloe's emergency surgery.
The footage showed Victoria walking through a restricted medical corridor.
She wasn't alone.
A man wearing a white doctor's coat walked beside her.
His face was hidden beneath a surgical mask.
Emma paused the video.
"We identified everyone entering this hallway."
She zoomed in.
"Except him."
Richard frowned.
"He's not hospital staff?"
Emma shook her head.
"No."
She pressed another key.
The image sharpened.
The fake ID badge became visible.
Counterfeit.
Professionally made.
Another detective spoke.
"The real doctor whose identity was copied was attending a conference in Chicago."
The room fell silent.
Richard's eyes narrowed.
"So someone infiltrated my hospital."
Emma nodded.
"It gets worse."
She played another clip.
The fake doctor entered the pharmacy.

Seven minutes later...
He left carrying a sealed medication case.
Chloe felt cold.
"My medication?"
Emma nodded slowly.
"We believe someone attempted to substitute your postoperative drugs."
The room froze.
Richard's cane struck the floor.
"Who authorized access?"
Emma answered quietly.
"No authorization exists."
"The security logs..."
"...were erased."
Attorney Harrison looked stunned.
"Impossible."
Emma turned her laptop around.
"Not impossible."
"Inside job."
---
At Sterling Headquarters...
Richard's emergency meeting continued.
Director Samuel Pierce smiled politely.
"The shareholders simply want stability."
Richard looked around the room.
"Tell me."
"How long have you been planning this?"
Samuel's smile faltered.
"I don't understand."
Richard chuckled.
"You will."
He pressed a small remote hidden beneath the conference table.
The massive screen behind him lit up.
Not financial charts.
Not stock prices.
Security footage.
The board members stared in confusion.
The video showed Samuel Pierce entering Sterling Headquarters three nights earlier.
At midnight.
He wasn't alone.
Walking beside him...
Was Victoria.
Gasps spread across the room.
Samuel immediately stood.
"This proves nothing."
Richard said nothing.
Another clip appeared.
A private office.
No audio.
But the camera clearly showed Victoria handing Samuel a thick envelope.
Moments later...
Samuel opened it.
Stacks of cash.
No one in the boardroom moved.
Samuel's face drained of color.
"This is fabricated."
Richard smiled for the first time.
"No."
He looked toward Attorney Harrison.
"Audio."
Harrison nodded.
The hidden recording began playing.
Victoria's unmistakable voice filled the boardroom.
"Richard is dying."

"Arthur will inherit everything."
"Support us now..."
"...and every director at this table becomes richer."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Samuel collapsed back into his chair.
Richard slowly stood.
"I've spent sixty years building this company."
His voice echoed through the room.
"I know where every camera is."
He took one slow step forward.
"And the cameras you don't know about..."
"...are even more valuable."
---
Back at the hospital...
Emma replayed the security footage one final time.
This time...
She froze the fake doctor's face as he briefly turned toward the camera.
Only for half a second.
It was enough.
The computer began running facial recognition.
Everyone watched the loading bar.
Twenty percent.
Forty percent.
Seventy percent.
Ninety-eight...
Then—
MATCH FOUND.
Emma's expression changed instantly.
"Oh my God..."
Richard stepped closer.
"Who is it?"
Emma slowly looked up.
"I don't think this was only about the Sterling family."
She turned the laptop toward everyone.
A government identification file filled the screen.
Occupation:
Former Chief Research Scientist
Employer:
Blackstone Biotech International
Status:
Missing for eighteen months.
Below his photograph appeared a red warning banner.
PERSON OF INTEREST IN THREE SUSPECTED CORPORATE ASSASSINATION CASES.
Chloe's breathing stopped.
Richard stared at the screen.
His face became colder than anyone had ever seen.
This was no longer a family betrayal.

Someone far more dangerous...
Had entered the game.
