Chapter 8 - The Shell Game

A cornered predator will always resort to the only weapon it knows. For the Hawthornes, that weapon was money.

Three weeks after the incident at the family center, my phone rang. It was the owner of the house I was renting. His voice was thick with guilt and hesitation.

"I am so sorry," the landlord stammered. "But a corporate real estate firm just offered me three times the market value for the property. It was an all-cash offer, and they demanded immediate possession. I have to terminate your lease. You have thirty days to vacate."

I closed my eyes, taking a slow, deep breath.

Margaret. She couldn't use the law to take my son, so she was using her hidden money to render me homeless. She wanted to prove to the family court that I was incapable of providing a stable environment for Noah.

"It's okay. I understand," I told the landlord, keeping my voice perfectly steady.

I hung up the phone. I didn't cry. I didn't break down. I walked to my laptop and pulled up the public property records.

The firm that had purchased my house was listed as Vanguard Horizon LLC.

I called my attorney, Richard. "Richard, the Hawthornes just bought the house I’m renting through a shell company to evict me. They used cash."

"If they used cash," Richard said, the predatory excitement evident in his voice, "then they are using offshore funds they deliberately hid from the federal bankruptcy courts when Hawthorne Holdings went under."

"Exactly," I smiled, a cold, dangerous expression taking over my face. "I want you to subpoena the routing numbers from the title company. Don't go to the police. Go to the federal bankruptcy trustee overseeing the Hawthorne liquidation. Let the creditors know that Margaret is hoarding millions in the Caymans while they settle for pennies on the dollar."

We didn't just play defense. We dropped a nuclear bomb.

Within forty-eight hours, Richard handed the evidence directly to the federal trustee. The response was immediate and catastrophic. The Department of Justice froze Vanguard Horizon LLC and seized the property as illicitly acquired assets. The eviction notice was completely nullified.

But it didn't end there.

Because Margaret had committed felony bankruptcy fraud to hide the money she used to buy my house, the feds executed a raid on her luxury condo. Her remaining offshore accounts were completely wiped out to pay the corporate creditors.

Late that night, Daniel broke the no-contact order and called my cell phone. He sounded drunk, his voice slurred and frantic.

"You destroyed her," Daniel wept. "My mother is facing federal indictment. She has nothing left. You took everything!"

"I didn't take anything, Daniel," I replied, my voice devoid of any pity. "Your mother built a house out of gasoline, and then she handed me the match. I just refused to burn with you. Do not call this number ever again."

I hung up, blocked his number, and went upstairs to check on Noah. He was sleeping peacefully, his small chest rising and falling in the quiet room.

I pulled the blanket up to his chin. The monsters were finally locked outside.
